Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the common name for an amphibious fish in from the subfamily Oxudercinae?

Answer: Mudskipper

An adult mudskipper spends time both in the water and on land. They have pectoral fins that are jointed and function like arms when they are on land. This feature has led to their common name because when they are on land, their front fins are used to propel themselves across the ground as though they are skipping.

They have been observed jumping along as far as 2 feet (0.61 m) in one hop, and climbing low branches. These fish survive on land by using water that is stored in large pouches in their gills, and absorbing oxygen in their mouths and throats.
2. What type of cheese typically goes on pizza?

Answer: Mozzarella

Mozzarella is a type of cheese that is traditionally from southern Italy. Historically, it has been made using milk from the Italian buffalo, a type of water buffalo that is indigenous to Italy, but some producers have begun making it using cow's milk, sheep's milk, and goat's milk. Mozzarella is used in many pizza recipes, as well as in some pasta and salad recipes.
3. Which bird, with a number of species and subspecies, belongs to the genera Sturnella and Leistes?

Answer: Meadowlark

The meadowlark is typically found in grasslands in North and South America. Despite differing appearances, all male meadowlarks have red or yellow breasts. The species of this insectivorous bird can mostly be found in South America, with some being found in North America. South American species include the red-breasted meadowlark (Leistes militaris), the white-browed meadowlark (Leistes superciliaris), the Peruvian meadowlark (Leistes bellicosa), the pampas meadowlark (Leistes defillippi), and the long-tailed meadowlark (Leistes loyca). The South American meadowlarks are typically red-breasted.

North American species are typically yellow breasted, and include the eastern meadowlark (Sturnella magna), Lilian's meadowlark (S. m. lilianae; sometimes seen as a subspecies of the eastern meadowlark), and the western meadowlark (Sturnella neglecta).
4. What is one-tenth of a centimetre?

Answer: Millimetre

The metric system is used in the the International System of Units (SI). The basic unit of measure of length in the SI is a metre. In 1983, the International Bureau of Weights and Measures defined a metre as as "the length of the path traveled by light in vacuum during a time interval of 1/299792458 of a second". Each metre is divided into one hundred centimetres, or one thousand millimetres. On a standard ruler or measuring tape, both centimetres and millimetres will be shown.
5. Which garden plant has large, fragrant flowers that open at night?

Answer: Moonflower

The moonflower is sometimes known as devil's trumpet, jimsonweed, and thorn apple. This plant is a very unique. It has large trumpet-shaped flowers that open as dusk settles in. The flowers stay open overnight, then furl up again in the morning. Moonflowers are typically very fragrant, and are an easy-care choice for many flower beds.

6. What is the vehicle that is pictured here?

Answer: Motorcycle

In 1885, Gottlieb Daimler and Wilhelm Maybach created the first motorcycle that was powered by a gasoline fueled internal combustion engine. However, only one motorcycle was made from their design. In 1894, Hildebrand & Wolfmüller began mass-producing two-wheeled motorcycles for sale to the general public. Since then, two-wheeled and three-wheeled motorcycles have been made for a variety of purposes including road travel, racing, military uses, off-road travel, mopeds, and scooters.

Answer: margaritas

Margaritas are made with tequila, triple sec, and lime juice. Most margaritas are served in a glass with salt on the rim of the glass as shown in this photo. The word margarita is Spanish for "daisy". In the world of cocktails, daisies are drinks that are made with a base spirit, a liqueur, and citrus juice of some sort. Margaritas are served with or without ice cubes.

They can also be mixed with crushed ice as a frozen margarita. The history of the tequila is unclear, but it has become the most popular tequila-based cocktail around the world.
8. What is a thick soup of Italian origin?

Answer: Minestrone

There isn't one recipe for minestrone soup. Rather, a variety of soup falls under the umbrella of the name "minestrone" because it is made with whatever vegetables are available to the cook. That said, most minestrone soups are very hearty, and contain beans, onions, celery, carrots, leaf vegetables, stock, Parmesan cheese and tomatoes. Sometimes, minestrone soup is vegetarian, but sometimes it contains meat, or is made from bone broth.

Many cooks also include pasta or rice.
9. What is another name for a raincoat that is frequently used in Great Britain?

Answer: Mackintosh

A mackintosh is a heavy raincoat that is popular in Great Britain. The coat is named after a Scottish chemist, Charles Macintosh (1766-1843). He invented the process for the fabric that is used in mackintosh coats and patented the processing 1823. He cemented two layers of fabric together with rubber that had been dissolved in a coal-tar naphtha solution. Before long, the term "mackintosh" was used to refer to all raincoats whether or not they had been made by him (similar to the terms "Kleenex", "Xerox", and "Q-tip" in today's language to refer to tissues, copy machines, and cotton swabs).
10. What converts sound into electrical energy in a variety of applications?

Answer: Microphone

A microphone is a transducer. Transducers convert energy from one form to another. In the example of the microphone, they convert sound into an electrical signal that is then sent to another device. Signals from microphones can be sent to hearing aids, speakers in concert halls, to recording devices, speakers in public address systems, megaphones, and many other applications. Essentially, microphones work by converting air pressure variations in a sound wave into an electrical signal that can be used in another device.
