Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the ten-letter hard candy that kids can suck on for ages?

Answer: Jawbreaker

Jawbreakers are a go-to for many sugar cravers. They can be a variety of colours, sizes, and flavours, but they all start with a single grain of sugar. They are made with a candy-making process called panning. Grains of sugar are placed into a spherical pot. It is then rotated constantly over a gas flame as the grains of sugar tumble around. Over the next while as it rotates, liquid sugar is added to the pot. Additions of liquid sugar happen over 14 to 19 days for the average size jawbreaker before the candy is finished.

Most jawbreakers are very shiny when they are done. The shining process happens when the candies have reached their desired size. They are moved to a different spherical pot called a polishing pan. Food grade wax is added while they are once again rotated. This gives them their shiny appearance.

Jawbreaker was also an influential American punk rock band. They formed in 1986, and have remained active off and on through the first part of the 21st century.
2. What do you call a writer for a news medium?

Answer: Journalist

A professional journalist is one who researches, gathers, and processes information so that it can be presented to members of the public. The presentation of the information that a journalist collects can be done in a number of ways, including print, radio, television, or on various websites. Thomas Hanitzsch, et al. published a book in 2019 that provided a profile of journalists based on a study that occurred from 2012-2016 across 27,500 journalists in 67 countries. Among other things, authors found that 57% of journalists were male, they had a mean age of 38 years, and 80% worked as journalists full-time. It was also found that 50% of the journalists worked in print, 23% on television, 17% on radio, and 16% in online news.

Besides professional journalists, a person who keeps a journal or diary can also be called a journalist.
3. What is a ten-letter J-word that describes extreme happiness?

Answer: Jubilation

The word jubilation means "to rejoice". The first known use of the word jubilation occurred in the 14th century when it meant "joyous song or outburst". The word jubilation comes to us from the Latin word "jubilatus" (rejoiced), the Middle High German "jū" (exclamation of joy), or the Greek "iygē" (shout).

Another ten-letter J-word that describes extreme happiness is joyfulness. The word joyfulness comes from a variety of sources including Old French "joie" (pleasure, delight, erotic pleasure, bliss, joyfulness), Latin "gaudia" (expressions of pleasure; sensual delight), Greek "gaio" (I rejoice), and Middle Irish "guaire" (noble).

A similar ten-letter J-word is joyousness. It means feeling or showing lots of happiness. Etymologists have traced this word to the Old French word "joios" (happy, cheerful, merry, glad).
4. What do you call it when someone is crossing the street in spots that are not designated for crossing?

Answer: Jaywalking

The term "jaywalking" originated in the US very early in the 20th century. At first, the term "jay drivers" was used for automobile and horse-drawn carriage drivers who did not drive on the correct side of the street. Very shortly after the term jay driver was used for vehicles, the term "jaywalker" started to be used to describe pedestrians who impeded the flow of traffic by not crossing the road in designated areas.

Today, some parts of the world have very strict jaywalking laws. Individuals who violate these laws can be ticketed or arrested. Other parts of the world do not have jaywalking laws. Instead, they give the responsibility for road safety to the pedestrian, trusting that they will only cross when safe. When travelling, it is advisable to check with local laws to avoid jaywalking infractions that result in fines or jail time.
5. Which animal, belonging to the genus Lepus, has six species found in North America?

Answer: Jackrabbit

The jackrabbit is not actually a rabbit. Rather, it is a hare. There are six species of jackrabbits that live in western North America: the antelope jackrabbit, the black-tailed jackrabbit, the white-sided jackrabbit, the Tehuantepec jackrabbit, the black jackrabbit, and the white-tailed jackrabbit.

The name "jackrabbit" is a combination of two animal names. Rabbit comes from the obvious visual similarities to the actual rabbit. The "jack" is short for "jackass" or donkey, a name that is earned due to its long ears like a donkey.
6. What is another term for the type of dances that were done in juke joints early in the 20th century?

Answer: Jitterbugs

Jitterbugs, or swing dances, originated in the US early in the 20th century. One type of jitterbug dance is the lindy hop. The Savoy Ballroom in New York City had a no-discrimination policy early in the 20th century when most other dance halls were segregated due to the race of the patrons. One source suggests that the term "jitterbug" started out to be a negative one.

It was initially used to describe white dancers who were trying to dance the lindy hop too fast. They were said to look like jittering bugs on the dance floor.

When the quick style of dance became popular, the term jitterbug lost its negative connotation.
7. Reportedly, what were Ronald Reagan's favourite snacks?

Answer: Jellybeans

In 1966, Ronald Reagan started eating jellybeans when he gave up pipe smoking. He was successful in his attempt to quit with beans from the Herman Goelitz Candy Company. In fact, that company sent regular shipments to Reagan. When he became president, Reagan had three-and-a-half tons of red, white, and blue jellybeans shipped to Washington for his inauguration.

They were flavoured very cherry (red), coconut (white), and blueberry (blue). According to the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and Museum, Reagan's favourite flavour of jellybean was licorice.
8. What is a term for the cornmeal flatbread pictured here?

Answer: Johnnycake

Johnnycake is also known as journey cake, johnny bread, hoecake, shawnee cake or spider cornbread. It is quite common in eastern North America including the US, Canada, the West Indies, Dominican Republic, Saint Croix, The Bahamas, Colombia, Bermuda, Curaçao and Puerto Rico. Johnnycake is a bread made from a batter of cornmeal, salt, hot water or milk, and sometimes a sweetener.

The batter is fried, typically in a cast-iron frying pan. It is thought that the Indigenous peoples of North America passed down the recipe and method of cooking to Europeans who arrived to colonize the area.
9. Who is responsible for teaching military members how to become paratroopers?

Answer: Jumpmaster

A jumpmaster is a member of the military who is responsible for training newer members how to effectively jump from planes using parachutes. Jumpmasters can be found in the US, Australia, and Canada. A jumpmaster has a very complex job. Besides training for routine daytime jumps, s/he must also train for nighttime jumps, inspect the equipment and the jumpers for safety before every jump, collaborate with the Flight Navigator to ensure release of jumpers at the correct time, inspect parts of the plane such as the Paratroop Door and the Jump Platform, and identify reference points on the ground for jumpers.
10. Which military aircraft has powerful engines and is designed for combat?

Answer: Jetfighter

The jetfighter is a military aircraft that is powered by jet engines. Its fixed wing design helps it to achieve a high speed, as well as be very maneuverable in flight. This makes the jetfighter the perfect plane for air-to-air combat. This means that the jetfighter's role in any combat situation is to gain control of the air space over a battlefield.

This, in turn, allows other aircraft such as bombers to engage with ground targets.
