Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What Egyptian god with the head of a ram created babies using his potter wheel?

Answer: Khnum (Chnoumis)

The Egyptian god Khnum had many wives, one of whom was Ra's daughter, Satet. Together, the two of them lived in Abu. Khnum was a potter. He used clay from the Nile River and formed humans. Heket, another wife of Khnum, breathed life into the clay and then put the baby inside a woman's womb.

Khnum had two more wives named Nebtu and Menhit.
2. The Egyptian god of chaos and war goes by what name?

Answer: Set (Seth)

Set is a combination of aardvark, jackal, and donkey. Set had a sister-wife named Nebet-Hut, but Set was in love with his brother's wife. When Inpu was born to Nebet-Hut and Set, Set became enraged because Inpu liked Usir and Usir felt the same about Inpu.

Set planned a banquet and a game to be played after the banquet. A box was built and whoever would fit in the box would win the game. Many people tried and failed, but Usir fit perfectly. When Usir was inside the box, Set locked the lid and had the box thrown into the Nile River.

Aset found Usir's body inside a tree that had grown around the box. When Set found out that Usir's body had been found, he had Usir's corpse dismembered and the body parts scattered.
3. Taking the shape of his favorite animal, Inpu (Anubis) became the god of what process?

Answer: Mummification

Nebet-Hut and Set's son Inpu loved the dogs that roamed the desert, so he took the shape of a black dog. He realized he wanted to become the god of mummification after watching the desert dogs kill and eat the bodies of what they killed.

When Set killed Usir, Inpu was happy to have his uncle with him again even though it was in the underworld. Inpu took over funeral rites for the dead and let Usir rule the underworld.

Only rich Egyptians and animals went through the mummification process. After the body was washed, Inpu would put the organs into jars, discarding the brain. The body was wrapped and the mummification process was complete.
4. Who was known as the first Egyptian god?

Answer: Ra (Helios)

Ra sprang forth from the waters of Nun. His first words spewed forth like lava. Ra had one eye that he plucked out and sent to find two of his children who had run away. In order to be able to see, Ra created another eye. When Ra's first eye returned with the children, Ra made it into a cobra and used it on his crown. Ra's tears formed human beings.

After Ra's name was dragged through the mud and one of his wives defended him by shedding blood, Ra went by the name Amun-Ra which is another name for war lord.
5. The Egyptian god Sobek (Suchos) took what reptilian form?

Answer: Crocodile

Sobek was a crocodile born to the goddess Nit. His brother was a serpent named Apep. Sobek stayed close to his mother after birth while Apep went down to the underworld to harass gods and goddess. Sobek was a bloodthirsty reptile that would on occasion have to be assuaged with bread instead of meat.

Once, without realizing what he was eating, Sobek ate one of Usir's body parts that had been distributed by Set after dismemberment. Sobek was deeply sorry, but was still punished. The gods cut Sobek's tongue out of his mouth.
6. The Egyptian goddess of fertility was at one time married to the Egyptian god of the afterlife. What were the names of this power couple?

Answer: Aset & Usir (Isis & Osiris)

After finding all but one of Usir's dismembered body parts, Aset was able bring Usir back to life for one night after his brother killed him and then had him dismembered. In that one night Aset and Usir made a child that Aset named Heru Sa Aset. She protected Heru by using the power of Ra until Heru was old enough to protect himself.
7. Tefnut (Tphenis) was created by Ra (Helios) to be the god of what weather phenomenon?

Answer: Rain

The first two gods Ra created were Tefnut as god of rainfall and Shu as god of wind. When Aset became a widow everyone doted on her and this action angered Tefnut. She took the form of a lioness and ran away. With Tefnut missing, Egypt dried up and the ground cracked without moisture. Meanwhile, everywhere Tefnut ran received the rain that she gave them. Ra sent Shu, Tefnut's husband-brother, to find Tefnut and bring her back to Egypt. With much cajoling, Tefnut dropped her lioness form and returned to Egypt, now being known as 'the most honorable one'.
8. The god of wisdom was Tehuti (Thoth). He was also known as what part of Ra's body?

Answer: Tongue

Tehuti was married to Seshat and Ma'at. He was a god in the shape of a stork. Tehuti gave words to people who didn't have them and taught them numbers so they could handle calculations. Tehuti guided Ra since childhood. When Ra would defeat evil, Tehuti would sing the god's praises.

One night Tehuti played a game of dice with the moon god Khonsu and won the world five extra days added to the three-sixty day year. Because of this, Tehuti had his beak curved to resemble a crescent moon. Tehuti considered himself one of the most important gods because of his wisdom, but he never spoke the statement out loud.
9. Hut Heru (Hathor) was the goddess of delight who turned into the goddess of vengeance. What form did Hut Heru take as the goddess of vengeance?

Answer: Lioness

Hut Heru was the goddess of delight. She had people burn incense in their home in her honor. She loved shiny things and encouraged people to wear jewelry. Her favorite musical instrument was the harp and she played it often.

When rumors began spreading about Ra and his evil ways, the rumors enraged Hut Heru and the rage changed her features into those of a lioness. Hut Heru went on a bloodbath, killing anyone who maligned Ra. As a lioness, Hut Heru's name was changed to Sekhmet, the goddess of vengeance.

Ra couldn't believe how far Hut Heru had gone in his name, so he gathered as many people together as he could, hoping to help Hut Heru. Together, Ra had everyone make as much beer as they could possibly make. In the beer, Ra mixed crushed ochre clay with pomegranates and hibiscus petals. Ra was hoping the beer mixture would change Hut Heru back into herself. Ra had the beer poured out over the land of Egypt hoping Hut Heru would drink it.

Hut Heru thought the liquid on the ground was blood and lapped it up. Slowly, the lioness that was Hut Heru returned to her usual bodily form.
10. The Egyptian god of medicine was also the first god born human. What was this god's name?

Answer: Imhotep (Imuthes)

Imhotep lived during Egypt's third dynasty. He was born to his mother Kheredu-ankh and his father Kanofer in the town of Ineb Hedj (currently known as Memphis, Egypt) and married to Ronfrenofert. Imhotep was a studious god who loved nature and science. Imhotep loved learning about the architecture of things. He studied plants so they could be used to make medicine.

Not only did Imhotep enjoy medicine, but he also enjoyed architecture. He talked Pharaoh Netjerikhet into stacking limestone slabs on top of each other going from larger to smaller slabs creating a pyramid. These pyramids would make better tombs than the mastabas that were being used already.
