Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Zeus was definitely a great fornicator, yet occasionally his love efforts failed, as was the case when he tried to seduce Daphne. She escaped by being miraculously changed into a bay tree.

Answer: False

It's not Zeus who is the unlucky lover in this story but Apollo. In contrast to Zeus, Apollo is not successful in ALL his amorous enterprises. In this particular case it's exactly Zeus who thwarts him in his seduction attempts by changing Daphne into a laurel tree.

Another famous failure is when he offers Cassandra the gift of divination. Cassandra receives the gift, but then refuses to have relations with him. Apollo gets angry, but cannot retract the gift from her. Instead, he curses her: no one will ever believe her premonitions.
2. He met Danae as a shower of what substance?

Answer: golden rain

Danae's story should not be confounded with the story of the fifty daughters of Danaus. Each one of them was compelled by their uncle to marry one of his sons. Forty-nine refused, and were punished with filling the 'leaking jar of the Danaids'. Hypermnesta, the fiftieth of them, found happiness with the husband she had accepted, Lynkeus, a kind man.
3. With the help of his good friend Aphrodite, and after changing himself into a swan, Zeus scared Leda into running into his arms. What shape had Aphrodite taken?

Answer: an eagle

Leda was the wife of Tyndareus. Leda brings forth two eggs. From one comes Pollux and Helen of Troy; from the other Castor and Clytemnestra. How specialised Zeus was in mass-producing kids can also be illustrated by the story of the Titan Mnemosyne who has no fewer than NINE children with Zeus: the Nine Muses.
4. To approach Europa he became which of these?

Answer: a bull

Europa being dragged away on the back of a bull was a frequent subject for Renaissance and also other painters.
5. To seduce the faithful Alcmene he had to be very clever indeed. In this case he gave himself the appearance of what person?

Answer: her husband

Plautus wrote a play on this subject titled 'Amphitryon'.
6. In the case of Io he did not change himself, but changed his willing lady love into what form?

Answer: a heifer

He did not want to arouse the jealousy of his wife Hera.
7. Who was the daughter Zeus had with Metis, the goddess of wisdom?

Answer: Pallas Athena

Because of a prophecy that his child would become greater than him, Zeus decided to devour Metis in the first month of her pregnancy. This cannibalistic method of aborting his child was not successful, however. When the time had come for the child to be born, Pallas Athena, goddess of wisdom and patroness of Athens, sprang fully armed from Zeus' head.

This was some kind of aftereffect of Hephaestos' technique to cure headaches: cracking the patient's skull. As Zeus was immortal, it did not harm him too much.
8. From his love-making with Leto, Artemis, the patroness of virgins and of hunting was born. Who was the boy he begot with Leto?

Answer: Phoebus Apollo

Phoebus Apollo was the god of the sun and of science.
9. With which of these did he beget Hermes (aka Mercury to the Romans)?

Answer: Maia, the daughter of Atlas and Pleione

With Demeter he had Persephone. With Themis he begot the Three Fates or Parcae: Clotho, Lachesis and Atropos. Triplets were a specialty of Zeus and another love-episode with Themis led to the birth of the Three Horae Eunomia, Dike and Irene. With Hera he had Hebe, the goddess of youth; Ares, the god of war, and Eileithya, the goddess of childbirth.
10. In one case the effects of the love-making were disastrous for the girl. When Zeus wanted to make love to Semele, Zeus's wife gave the young girl the inspiration to want to see Zeus in his full glory. What happened?

Answer: Zeus appeared to her in the radiance of all his splendours and she was consumed to ashes

In another case Hera also had had her vengeance. When she discovered her hubby was making love with 'a heifer' (=Io), she sent a gadfly who pursued her husband's new girlfriend till the other gods took pity on Io and ordered Hera to give up harassing the poor girl.
