Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The book starts with a letter from Adrian to Tony Blair, asking the Prime Minister to write a letter to help him retrieve a deposit of £57.10 that he had paid for a holiday. Adrian cancelled this holiday because of the threat of Saddam Hussein's Weapons of Mass Destruction. Where had Adrian planned to go on holiday?

Answer: Cyprus

The Travel Agent was demanding proof that Saddam had a stockpile of WMD's, that he could deploy them within forty-five minutes and that they could reach Cyprus. Adrian wanted the Prime Minister to provide a handwritten note confirming this.
2. As a PS to his letter to the Tony Blair, Adrian asked if Cherie Blair would agree to be the guest speaker at the Leicestershire and Rutland Creative Writing Group's Literary Dinner, as which author had turned them down "rather curtly"?

Answer: Will Self

Adrian is supposed to be arranging both the venue and the guest speaker for the above event. The letter to Tony Blair was written on September 29th 2002 and the dinner was scheduled for December 23rd 2002. Adrian's forward planning skills have not improved with age.
3. At the start of the book, Adrian supports Tony Blair's stance on Iraq. True or False?

Answer: True

Adrian has the utmost faith in Tony Blair's methods and motives. He doesn't believe that a war will happen, and isn't at all worried about his eldest son Glen, who has joined the Army.
4. William, Adrian's youngest son, has recently gone to live with his mother in which country?

Answer: Nigeria

William is Adrian's son from his marriage to Jo Jo, a Nigerian princess.
5. Adrian moved into a loft apartment at the Old Battery Factory. In which part of Leicester was this situated?

Answer: Rat Wharf

When Adrian views the apartment he sees a small brown creature slip into the canal. He thinks it is a vole. Only Adrian could view an apartment in Rat Wharf and think this.
6. When Adrian has moved into his new home, he is terrorized by what he describes as a "gang" of swans. The biggest swan reminds him of which actor?

Answer: Sir John Gielgud

This swan is referred to as "Gielgud" throughout the rest of the book. The swans become one of the many trials of Adrian's life as they frighten away tradesmen and guests. When anyone does succeed in visiting him, they usually trample swan excrement all over his real wooden floors.

There are many collective nouns for swans, among them a ballet, a bevy and a wedge.
7. Mr. Carlton-Hayes is Adrian's employer. What is the name of his long-term partner?

Answer: Leslie

Adrian didn't have the courage to ask if Leslie was male or female. Leslie's gender is not revealed. Initially I found this frustrating, but I suppose the point is that Mr. Carlton-Hayes and Leslie had been very happy together for many years, and Leslie's gender was irrelevant.
8. Adrian became romantically entangled with two of the daughters of the Flowers family. Which of the following was not a name of one of the family?

Answer: Rosie

Rosie is the name of Adrian's sister. Adrian managed to become engaged to Marigold whilst falling in love with Daisy.
9. When Adrian first met the Flowers family, which country did Marigold say that he shouldn't mention?

Answer: Mexico

Michael Flowers' first wife, Conchita, was Mexican. She had failed to settle in Leicestershire and returned to Mexico City with a pork butcher from Melton Mowbray. Unfortunately Michael Flowers irritated Adrian so much that he said that the Moles were believed to be Mexican refugees who fled religious persecution.
10. Adrian's old school friend, Nigel, is struggling to cope with which medical condition?

Answer: Blindness

Sue Townsend became blind due to diabetic retinopathy. She has said that Nigel serves as a mouthpiece for some of her frustrations. Adrian is horrified to find that Nigel can no longer see colours, as he had been planning to ask Nigel to help with the interior design of his new apartment.
