Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How many did Ruskin kill in the Salt Lake City bank robbery?

Answer: 5

In Salt Lake City, Ruskin killed five people in the bank. That number consisted of a teller, a woman depositing money, the manager, the manager's secretary and a security guard. Ruskin told the manager, at first, that he was a well-respected manager of the Hudson River Bank and that he was opening up some new banks in Phoenix and Reno. However, this would've been the robbery that Ruskin goofed up on.
2. Detective Gosal suspected that Ruskin was the "Butcher Bandit".

Answer: True

Gosal started to get suspicious of Ruskin because Ruskin, first off, did not seem overly excited that his money wasn't touched but that the rest of the currency in the bank was. Since detectives hadn't thoroughly checked Ruskin's case, Gosal, along with Ezra Ramsdale, checked it out. They found that the top layer consisted of the bills up to $20,000, but the rest of it was just old newspaper made to look like money.
3. What lead did Jackie Ruggles give to Isaac Bell in Ryolite?

Answer: a signiicant deformity that the bandit had

Ruggles told Bell that the bandit was missing the little finger on the left hand. He was dead certain about this, but no one in the town believed him and wouldn't take his testimony. Bell was accepting any lead he could get and believed Ruggles.
4. What did Sheriff Huey say that Jackie had a sweet tooth for?

Answer: gumdrops

Huey thought about Ruggles after awhile as being a possible witness, but dismissed it because of how young the boy was. He told Bell, however, that he might be able to bribe the boy with gumdrops. Ruggles loved gumdrops and Bell used this to his advantage in getting the information that he needed to catch the bandit.
5. What city did Ruskin travel to in his private box car?

Answer: San Francisco

The bandit had now changed his disguise. He was on an old freight car upon which he had a full blown suite. As the bandit was inside shaving and getting ready to depart, his private boxcar was being towed into Oakland. From there, his box car would be loaded onto a car ferry and taken across the bay into San Francisco.
6. What was the name of the ferry which took Ruskin and his box car across the bay?

Answer: San Gabriel

The name of the ferry was the San Gabriel and it was not only used to haul passengers back and forth from Oakland and San Francisco, but it also carried railroad cars as well. The bandit disembarked his private car and strolled up to the passenger deck to await its arrival into San Francisco.
7. What make of car was Ruskin picked up in by his sister?

Answer: Mercedes

The bandit was met at the terminal by his sister. His sister was disguised as Rose Mantega when she met Bell in Denver. She picked up her brother in a car called the Mercedes Simplex. The Simplex had a large engine for its time which was a 4-cylinder, 60 horsepower power plant. The car could do a speed of 80 mph and Margaret would always use all of the power the car had to offer.
8. What was the name of the bank that Ruskin took the stolen money to?

Answer: Cromwell National Bank

Ruskin had his sister drive him to the Cromwell National Bank. Actually, Ruskin was really Jacob Cromwell who owned the bank. Cromwell robbed the other banks for his own personal gain to try and make Cromwell National Bank one of the largest banks next to Wells Fargo. He knew he would never catch up to the assets of Wells Fargo, but he was determined to be not far behind.
9. A small plaque read the bank's assets as being what amount?

Answer: $22 million

As Cromwell approached the bank, there was a small, golden plaque outside the bank which read the bank's total assets at $22 million. Cromwell laughed to himself and thought how nice it would be to see that plaque changed to $23 million. At the rate he was going, that wouldn't have been impossible. After all, he had the currency and a $475,000 bank draft from Salt Lake City.
10. Eliah Ruskin was actually an alias for the Butcher Bandit. What was really the name of the Butcher Bandit?

Answer: Jacob Cromwell

Jacob Cromwell was the actual name for the Butcher Bandit. His sister was Margaret Cromwell. Margaret is Jacob's protector and has control over just about everything he does. Jacob knew how to get around the law by killing everyone who was in the bank that he hit. He also covered his tracks by gathering all of the evidence such as shell casings from each bank robbery that he did.
11. Who was the senior secretary at the bank?

Answer: Marian Morgan

12. There was an actual caller on the telephone line when the Salt Lake City agents showed up.

Answer: False

When the agents from Salt Lake City arrived, Cromwell seemed to be on the phone as a ruse to throw them off. The line was actually a dead line, but the agents just thought that Cromwell was doing his civic duty to his customers. In this instance, he was acting as though he was talking to a guy about closing out an account at Cromwell National and transferring his account to a bank in Louisiana. Again, Cromwell played it shrewd and covered all his tracks.
13. What was the amount stolen from the Salt Lake City robbery?

Answer: $241,000

After the agents from Salt Lake left, Cromwell left word for Marian not to bother him for at least two hours. In that time, he pulled out all the money which he stolen from Salt Lake City and counted it out. The take came out to some $241,000. Not to mention the $475,000 bank draft which he deposited into various accounts he set up to hide the money which he stole from the other banks.
14. How many people did the bandit kill in Elkhorn, Montana?

Answer: 4

When one of Bell's agents went to Elkhorn, the manager was a bit disturbed. He couldn't understand why someone would finally investigate the crime after three years. They were the manager, teller, and a married couple making a withdrawal.

16. What was Curtis looking for at the Union Pacific Railroad archives?

Answer: all of these

While in the Union Pacific Railroad office, Curtis was looking for any schedules which would link Cromwell's getaway. All accounts showed that Cromwell escaped without a trace as to where he went. A worker at the archives building suggested to look up freight car schedules instead of passenger. They found a link by doing that. The worker stated that even locked freight cars could be unlocked by the workers in case of fire.
17. Loaded and locked freight cars could have been opened by the workers of the rail yard.

Answer: True

The worker stated that locked freight cars could be unlocked by the workers in case there was a fire on one of them. No one at the time thought to look at the locked freight cars because they assumed they would be either loaded or contain nothing of interest.
18. Who was the bandit's chauffeur?

Answer: Abner Weed

Answer: Stylish Spirit
