Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What kind of car did the bandit have that his chauffeur was driving?

Answer: Rolls Royce

The car that Cromwell and his sister rode in to the Barbary Coast was a Rolls Royce Brougham. The Rolls was made in London by a coach company by the name of Barker. It had a 6-cylinder 30 horsepower engine in it. It had an open compartment in the front for the driver and an enclosed compartment in the back for the passengers, divided in between by a window to provide privacy for the rear compartment. Cromwell could communicate with his driver by a "speaking tube" which, in 1906, was the forerunner of the intercom system we know today.
2. What card game did the bandit say he was going to go play?

Answer: Faro

After Cromwell danced with Marian Morgan for a time, she sat down to rest. Cromwell politely asked if it would be okay for him to go and play a few hands of Faro. In truth, he was needing to talk with Red Kelly, owner of Spider Kelly's saloon where the Cromwells had gone for the evening.
3. What kind of job did the bandit want Red Kelly to do for him?

Answer: murder Isaac Bell

Red Kelly was a brute of a man. He had once fought with Jim Corbett and nearly knocked him out, but got knocked out himself in a later round. Cromwell wanted Kelly to kill Isaac Bell so that Bell could no longer pursue him. Kelly was hesitant of the idea because hardly anyone who has ever killed a Van Dorn agent has survived. Cromwell instructed Kelly to make it look like an accident.
4. How much money was the bandit offering Kelly to do a job for him?

Answer: $20,000

Cromwell offered Kelly $20,000 to kill Isaac Bell at his hotel in Denver. He would give Kelly $10,000 up front and then give him the rest once Bell was proven dead.
5. The bullet that the sheriff of Bisbee gave Bell was what caliber?

Answer: .38 caliber

Bell eventually made it to Sheriff Murphy's house while the sheriff was making repairs to his house after a flood. After a discussion with the sheriff, Murphy handed Bell a small sack which contained a bullet from a .38 automatic. Bell surmised that it was from an automatic because the shell was discharged. Murphy said the shell was found under the carpet by a small boy playing on the floor of the bank a few weeks after the robbery and killings.
6. What city did all of the leads that Curtis and Irvine gave to Bell lead to?

Answer: San Francisco

Curtis gave his information and said that he found records of only one boxcar whose destination was San Francisco. There was no other record of it being destined to go anywhere else. Irvine tracked some of the stolen money's serial numbers and found three of the stolen bills ended up in San Francisco. Two were found in the Crocker National Bank and one was in the Cromwell National Bank.
7. What name did Kelly keep calling Bell during the altercation in Bell's suite?

Answer: Pretty Boy

Kelly was already waiting for Bell in his suite when Bell returned from his meeting with Curtis and Irvine. In a taunting manner, Kelly kept calling Bell "Pretty Boy" since Bell was well-dressed and well-to-do. After the altercation, it was Kelly who would be lying on a slab at the morgue after Bell shot him four times.
8. Who was the head of the San Francisco Van Dorn office?

Answer: Horace Bronson

Bell, Curtis and Irvine decided to head to San Francisco and see if they could scare up anything there. Horace Bronson was in charge of the San Francisco office and invited the guys to dinner at the Bohemian Club.
9. Who did Bell see come into the club that shocked him?

Answer: Rose Mantega

Bell was all set to enjoy the sweetbreads that he ordered and was giving a bit of information about them when he was stopped short by a couple walking into the club. He recognized the woman as being Rose Mantega whom he had met in Denver at the Brown Palace.

The man with "Rose" was her brother Jacob Cromwell. Bell hadn't quite linked the two up just yet, but was starting to get a little suspicious. He found out that "Rose's" real name was Margaret.
10. What did Bell find a bit odd about Cromwell?

Answer: Cromwell kept his gloves on during dinner

Bell approached Margaret Cromwell, stating that they had met in Denver. Cromwell got up out of courtesy and shook Bell's hand. When he did, Bell noticed that Cromwell wore gloves and did not remove them for dinner. Instinctively, Bell looked at the little finger on the left hand which was supposed to be missing; according to Jackie Roggles.

However, Bell saw that the finger was filled out and seemed whole.
11. After his meeting with Cromwell, who did Bell ask on a dinner date?

Answer: Marian Morgan

Bell and Irvine went to Cromwell's bank to inquire about some of the stolen bills that had been traced back. One of the bills was found to have gone through the bank. After their meeting with Cromwell, Bell decided to ask Cromwell's personal secretary, Marian Morgan, on a date.
12. What town in Colorado was Bell going to so that he could trap the bandit?

Answer: Telhuride

Bell picked Telhuride, Colorado because the town was in a box canyon. This means that there was only one way in and one way out of town. The bandit would have no way of an easy escape because of this feature. However, what Bell was unaware of was that the tracks leading into Telhuride were of a narrow-gauge track, not standard gauge which would have held Cromwell's private boxcar. Bell went along with his plans anyhow.
13. What disguise did the bandit use in this robbery attempt?

Answer: a woman

Cromwell couldn't use his private boxcar so he used a buggy instead. He went to the bank just before closing dressed as a woman, but was surprised when he recognized Irvine. For a brief second, Bell did not realize he was looking at Cromwell until he saw the gloves. Cromwell shot and killed Irvine instantly and then shot at Bell.
14. Who rode away with the bandit after the robbery attempt?

Answer: Margaret Cromwell

Margaret Cromwell was acting as Rachel Jordan for this robbery job. She picked up the buggy from the stables and picked up Cromwell at the back door of the bank. She saw that her brother had been injured in the gunfight, but it was not life-threatening. Cromwell told her to take the railroad cut instead of the main road, saying that Pardee would have been watching the bank and only saw the woman enter before the shooting started.
15. What kind of car did Bell have shipped from Chicago?

Answer: Locomobile

Bell decided to have his beloved Locomobile shipped from Chicago so that he could tool around San Francisco. He made a vague phone call to Marian Morgan at the bank to meet him for lunch and then went to pick her up in it. The car was used in the Vanderbilt Cup race on Long Island in 1905 and was driven then by Joe Tracey, who placed third in the race. Bell had it modified for street travel, which meant having fenders and headlights installed and changing the transmission.
16. Where did the bandit say he was going to do another robbery?

Answer: San Diego

After making a speech at a new hospital for the elderly, Cromwell and his sister went to Lafayette Park where he explained to her that he was going to undertake another robbery. This time, he was going to attempt robbing the Wells Fargo bank in San Diego so that he could get even bigger than his nearest competitor. Little did he or Margaret know that they were being watched.
17. Bell noticed that an abandoned boxcar was newly repainted. What was the serial number on the boxcar when he first saw it?

Answer: 16173

Before Bell could get to the warehouse and check out the car, Cromwell had arranged to have the car repainted and emblazoned with Southern Pacific insignias. He also had the serial number lifted from another boxcar and placed on his. This way, the car could never be traced again. Or at least the one with the serial number that he did have.

The O'Brien Furniture car no longer was on the lists of any freight trains.
18. What city did Cromwell tell Ms. Morgan he was going to?

Answer: Los Angeles

Cromwell told Ms. Morgan that he was going to attend a banker's convention in Los Angeles the weekend of March 28-30. It was short notice and Cromwell originally stated that he wasn't going to go, but then changed his mind at the last minute. Morgan asked if she should book his chartered Pullman car. Cromwell said no, stating that he wanted the investors to see that their money wasn't being used elsewhere and he had their best interests in his heart.
19. By the time Bell figured out what Cromwell was up to, how much of a head start did Cromwell have?

Answer: About 4 hours

Cromwell did not ride in a regular train car with the other passengers. Instead, he slipped off the other side and boarded a private Pullman train. It left the rail yard about 15 minutes behind the regular passenger train on which he had booked a seat. Bell and Bronson's agent could not notify them until he reached San Jose. Bell and Bronson would take off in Bell's Locomobile.
20. Cromwell had on which disguise in order to rob again?

Answer: railroad conductor

Cromwell didn't get the chance to rob the Wells Fargo bank in San Diego. Bell and Bronson got there just in time to nab him while he was getting on his Harley, dressed as a railroad conductor. Cromwell insisted that he had done no crime and that Bell could not arrest him. Bell pointed out his disguise and went from there. Cromwell was shackled up and carried back to San Francisco in the Pullman car he had chartered for the trip to San Diego.
