Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Sea Yesteryear, the NUMA research vessel being used for the Navidad Bank project, was about to conclude its work and leave for Fort Lauderdale. Dirk, Jr. and Summer decided to make one last dive in the underwater caverns. What did they discover there?

Answer: A series of pictographs carved into the stone walls of the underwater chambers

Dirk, Jr. believed that the divers had overlooked something important while surveying the underwater chambers. He and Summer decided to make one last dive; they scraped the chamber walls with putty knives until they uncovered evidence of a series of pictographs on the stone walls.
2. What happened when Renee went below decks to retrieve Rita from the supply closet and bring her topside so that she could be turned over to the authorities?

Answer: Rita knocked Renee unconscious and murdered her.

Rita appeared cooperative when Renee came to release her from the closet. Then she knocked Rita unconscious, smothered her with a pillow, and carved the Odyssey logo into Renee's stomach. Rita slipped overboard, swam to shore, and escaped into the jungle before Renee's body was discovered by Al.
3. Which of the following did Flidais NOT do in order to elude the authorities and escape Costa Rica?

Answer: Steal a hotel courtesy car

After swimming to shore from the Poco Bonito, Flidais (aka Rita) entered the Rio Colorado Sport Fishing Lodge pretending to be a guest of the resort. She entered a guest room and called Epona, who arranged for a plane to pick Flidais up at the nearby airport. Flidais then stole clothing, money, a purse, and identification from the room.

She impersonated the room's occupant, Barbara Hacken, and had a courtesy car from the resort take her to the airport. From there, she boarded the Odyssey plane sent by Epona, and made good her escape.
4. At the Refugio Bartola Lodge and Research Center, Pitt and Giordino met and had drinks with a man named Percy Rathbone. Which of the following is NOT something Mr. Rathbone told them?

Answer: That El Castillo was a popular tourist attraction, and Pitt and Girodino should visit it.

Rathbone told Pitt and Giordino that the government did not permit tourists to visit El Castillo any longer. They claimed that the tourists were damaging the historical site. Rathbone also said that El Castillo was heavily guarded, and that one man who had tried to sneak past in had been killed.
5. Despite being told it was off-limits to tourists, Pitt and Giordino decided to break into the fortress at El Castillo to look for the ventilator shaft they suspected was there. Which of the following did they NOT do to avoid being caught in the act?

Answer: Knocked out two perimeter guards and stole their uniforms

When Pitt and Giordino broke into El Castillo, the guards had lazily allowed the dogs to run free while they remained in the guardhouse. Since their boat was hidden, everyone would assume they had continued on their voyage down the river. By distracting the dogs with a tasty snack and blacking out the lens of the security camera, the two were able to break in unnoticed.
6. What color were the jumpsuits of the men who worked for Odyssey in the underground tunnel?

Answer: Black

Jumpsuit color signified rank at Odyssey. All the men wore black jumpsuits. The women wore either white or green. When our heroes stole jumpsuits, Giordino found himself wearing white, impersonating a female employee.
7. Which of the following is not something Pitt and Giordino stole to use while exploring the underground tunnel complex?

Answer: Weapons

As soon as they were inside the Odyssey facility, Pitt and Giordino knocked out two employees and stole their jumpsuits. They took the golf cart for transportation as they surveyed the tunnel system, and stole the security car as they were planning their escape.
8. Admiral Sandecker called a meeting to discuss the recent discoveries on Navidad Bank. During this meeting, Dr. Elsworth Boyd made a startling revelation. What was it?

Answer: The Trojan War actually took place in England.

From his research, Dr. Boyd concluded that the Trojan War did not take place on the Turkish coast, as had previously been believed. Instead, it occurred in Cambridge, England, near the North Sea. Odysseus' historic voyage home from the war took place in the Atlantic Ocean.
9. After analyzing the data from Pitt and Giordino regarding the underground tunnels, what conclusion did Hiram Yaeger draw?

Answer: The tunnels were created to divert the South Equatorial Current.

If the South Equatorial Current was diverted from Africa into the Caribbean Sea, the result would be an eight degree drop in the temperature of the Gulf Stream by the time it reached Europe. This would lead to a new Ice Age in much of Europe and parts of the eastern United States.
10. While waiting for a helicopter to pick him up from the fake lighthouse, Pitt noticed three things that alerted him to danger. Which of the following was NOT one of them?

Answer: He noticed that Concepcion, the active volcanco on Ometepe, was beginning to erupt.

Pitt noticed wisps of smoke coming from Concepcion, indicating it was an active volcano. However, there was no evidence of an impending eruption. Luckily, the NUMA-chartered rescue helicopter arrived in time for Pitt and Giordino to make good their escape.
