Raditz senses a power level like his brother's (who is Goku) and homes in on this power. Raditz knows his brother as his Saiyan name which is 'Kakarrot'. This is a pun, like many other names in 'Dragonball' and 'Dragonball Z', on the word Carrot (kaKARROT).

Gohan is one of the main characters in the "Cell" saga later on when he is a teenager, and in this saga he reaches a power level which is almost as high, or even higher, than Goku's at that time. Gohan is, unlike a Saiyan, usually unwilling to fight, but when he gets a 'Killer Instinct' (like when he gets pushed too far by Cell) his power level can go through the roof.

Saiyans all have names which are puns of vegetables, like Kakarrot (Carrot), Raditz (Radish) and Vegeta (Vegetable), who also in the 2008 Dragonball movie was revealed to have a brother called Tarble (Vegeta and Tarble). Saiyans also increase their strength remarkably when they survive from the brink of death.

Neither Goku nor Piccolo want to team up as they were enemies in 'Dragonball', but they have no choice as they could not take on Raditz otherwise.
