Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is Aramis' formal name as given in 'Twenty Years After'?

Answer: Abbé D'Herblay

D'Herblay was Aramis' original formal name. Afterwards, he became Bishop of Vannes, Superior General of the Jesuits, and Duke of Alameda.
2. Who was Aramis' first mistress?

Answer: Madame de Chevreuse

Madame de Winter was Athos' old mistress, Madame Bonacieux was d'Artagnan's mistress, and Madame Coquenard was Porthos' mistress.
3. What profession did Aramis dream of?

Answer: Churchman

Aramis was an abbe before he was a musketeer, but due to a quarrel he had to give up the cassock and don the uniform. He always anticipated the day when he could go back to being an abbe.
4. Did Aramis ever get married?

Answer: No

Aramis never married but may have had an illegitimate son with his second mistress, Madame de Longueville, but that isn't certain. Aramis was requesting that the king would be the child's godfather and that the child's 'father' (Madame de Longueville's husband) would get wealth in order to care for the boy. That makes it pretty clear-sounding that Aramis is the father.
5. Which political party was Aramis with in 'Twenty Years After'?

Answer: Frondeur

A major task as a Frondeur that Aramis had was to help the Duke de Beaufort escape from prison. Athos helped him, and as d'Artagnan and Porthos were Cardinalists, this started the feud between the quartet and almost broke their relationship, were it not for Athos, who settled the argument.
6. Who did Aramis try to save from execution in 'Twenty Years After'?

Answer: King Charles I

It was one of Aramis' tasks as a Frondeur. Athos helped, as he was a fellow Frondeur. Despite being Cardinalists, d'Artagnan and Porthos (the other two of the famed quartet) helped because they felt it was right. Their plan was so close to success but it failed all because of Milady's son, Mordaunt. The king's widow, Madame Henrietta, was devastated by his death.
7. How old was Aramis in the beginning of 'The Three Musketeers'?

Answer: Twenty-four

A young, vain man who loved women, discretion, and glamour, was that Aramis. It was through his high social connections and mistress that he could obtain help for his friends (such as a permit for d'Artagnan's mistress Constance Bonacieux to leave the convent she was hiding in).
8. Did Aramis always try to hide from his friends who his mistresses were?

Answer: Yes

Under no circumstances did he want anyone to find out about his mistresses, because it would result in a scandal. D'Artagnan found out about Madame de Chevreuse because he spied on them in 'The Three Musketeers'. Aramis made him swear not to tell anyone. Nobody other than d'Artagnan ever knew, luckily for Aramis.
9. Did Aramis devise a plan in 'The Man in the Iron Mask' to replace King Louis XIV with his twin brother?

Answer: Yes

Aramis roped Porthos into the affair, even though he didn't know anything and couldn't help with anything. That meant that Porthos also had to flee France, and it resulted in his death. Aramis and Porthos were being ambushed by Biscarat (the son of one of the Cardinal's guards they had to fight in their first duel with d'Artagnan). Porthos was unable to get away in time, and was killed by a bomb.

The text strongly suggests that Aramis cried for the first time in ages. Aramis was exiled from France and went to live in Spain for the rest of his life.
10. Did Aramis die in the series?

Answer: No

Aramis did not die in the series but the rest of the legendary quartet died. Athos died of grief after his son committed suicide, Porthos died in a bomb explosion, and d'Artagnan was shot in the battlefield. Aramis was simply exiled from France and lived in Spain, becoming the Duke of Alameda.
