Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Count Dracula, star of Bram Stoker's "Dracula", gave full-blooded support to the song presented by a nation from the region of the world where his ancestral castle was located. Which of the following could NOT have been his song of choice in the 2011 Eurovision Song Contest?

Answer: "Da Da Dam" by Paradise Oskar from Finland

Count Dracula's castle is described as being in the Carpathian Mountains near the Borgo Pass, placing it in the Romanian part of Transylvania. At times, Transylvania has included some regions of the countries now known as Ukraine and Moldova. We are not given full details of his life in the novel, but it is suggested that he had studied 'the dark arts', and that he had been a magnificent warrior in battles against the Turks. This appears to be a reference to a real-life leader nicknamed Dracula - Vlad III of Wallachia, also sometimes referred to as Vlad the Impaler, was the son of Vlad Dracul. In the middle of the 15th century he led the resistance to the expansion of the Ottoman Empire into Transylvania.

Bram Stoker's character attempts to expand his dominion in the late 19th century, travelling to England as his starting point. The story is told mostly through letters written by those whom he encounters, including solicitor Jonathan Harker whose meeting with Dracula in Transylvania opens the novel, his fiancée / wife Minna, Jonathan Seward who runs the asylum to which the unfortunate Renfield (obsessed with eating insects and small animals) has been committed and who calls on his old friend Professor Abraham van Helsing when Lucy Westenra falls ill. It is van Helsing who eventually recognizes the true nature of her illness, and organizes the pursuit and destruction of Count Dracula.
2. Bella Swan (later Bella Cullen), one of the main characters of Stephenie Meyer's "Twilight" series of books, chose her favorite song in the Eurovision Song Contest because the name of the singer reminded her of one of her closest friends, the shapeshifter Jacob Black. Which of these was her choice?

Answer: "What About My Dreams" by Kati Wolf from Hungary

Jacob Black is introduced as the son of a Swan family friend, a Native American of the Quileute tribe, a real tribe whose folklore says they are descended from wolves, with whom they have a strong affinity. In "Twilight", Meyer twists this to make them werewolves who assume wolf form to fight vampires, their mortal enemies. Jacob, who falls in love with Bella and remains a good friend throughout the series, saves Bella a number of times both from vampire attack and from her own risk-taking behavior. In "Breaking Dawn", Jacob discovers that Bella's daughter Renesmee is his soul mate, and the romantic tension between the pair is resolved.

Bella was attracted to this song both because of the performer's name, and because of the song title. As a character who was first conceived by her author in a dream, she felt that dreams are pretty important!
3. We've all heard the rumors that Elvis never really died, but Charlaine Harris created a vampire-Elvis in "The Southern Vampire Mysteries", whose song of choice in the 2011 Eurovision Song Contest was "I Can", sung by Blue from the United Kingdom. Which of these characters was once known as "The King", but is now a shambling, almost child-like, shadow of his former self?

Answer: Bubba

According to Harris, a vampire morgue attendant who discovered that Elvis was not quite dead decided to turn him into a vampire to keep him alive. Unfortunately, the result was the brain-damaged Bubba, who likes to drink cat's blood, and who refuses to sing unless he is in the mood. Watching the Eurovision finals, he became convinced that Blue was going to sing "Blue Suede Shoes", and was somewhat disappointed by the actual performance.

Chow is an Asian vampire, while Alexei Romanov was formerly the last Tsarevich of Russia. According to the story of "The Southern Vampire Mysteries", he was turned into a vampire by Appius Livius Ocella, who had once been a Roman soldier at around the time of Jesus's life.
4. One of the characters from Richelle Mead's "Vampire Academy" series of books is a moroi princess, last of a royal line of Romanian vampires (and not a drag at all, despite her name). Which of these was hoping that "Change", sung by Hotal FM from Romania, would be the winning song in the 2011 Eurovision Song Contest?

Answer: Lissa Dragomir

Vasilisa Sabina Rhea Dragomir, known as Lissa, is the last Dragomir, and best friend of Rose Hathaway, a half-human half-vampire dhampir through whose eyes we see the events of the books. Lissa has a romantic relationship with Christian Ozzera, who helps her achieve her final position as queen at the end of the series, after his aunt Tasha had tried to frame Rose for the murder of Queen Tatiana.

In "Vampire Academy", Victor Dashkov, a friend of Lissa's father, suffers from Sandovsky's disease and tortures Lissa into using her powers to cure him, for which he is imprisoned.

In "Spirit Bound", our heroes break him out of jail to enlist his assistance in changing Lissa's guardian Dmitri back from a strigoi (an immortal and evil vampire, unlike the mortal and beneficent moroi) into a dhampir.
5. Lestat de Lioncourt, from Annie Rice's series of novels "The Vampire Chronicles", unhesitatingly chose a song sung representing his native country. Which of these was his favorite in the 2011 Eurovision Song Contest finals?

Answer: "Sognu" by Amaury Vassili from France

Lestat was born in the Auvergne region of France on 7 November 1760, a member of an impoverished family of minor nobility. He is one of the main characters, and often the narrator, of "The Vampire Chronicles". The second book in the series, "The Vampire Lestat", shows us the early years of his life, over a period of about 200 years. Tall and attractive, with long blond hair and eyes whose color seems to very from grey to blue to violet, Lestat has lovers of both genders, both while a human and as a vampire. After Magnus, the vampire who turns Lestat into a vampire, commits suicide almost immediately, Lestat is left heir to a vast fortune, with no guidance as to what his new condition means for his life, and sets out to explore what the world has to offer.

Lestat was illiterate in life, but has learned to read and write as a vampire. Although French is his native language, he writes in English, and is clearly fluent in it. He may have been disappointed that the French entry this year was sung in Corsican, a language derived from Italian and still spoken in the French-owned island of Corsica, as well as in part of the Italian island of Sardinia.
6. Darren O'Shaughnessy, writing as Darren Shan, gave us "The Saga of Darren Shan", a twelve-part series of books about Darren Shan, struggling to survive in a world full of vampires. The title of Darren's favorite song in the 2011 Eurovision Song Contest echoed the events of "Lord of the Shadows", the penultimate book in the series. Which of these would that be?

Answer: "Coming Home" by Sjonni's Friends from Iceland

In "Lord of the Shadows", Darren Shan returns to his home town with Cirque du Freak, and meets his old friend Tommy James. Tommy's death leads to a number of confrontations, in the course of which Darren is injured by Darius, son of his rival Steve Leonard (who will later be revealed as his half-brother) and Darren's younger sister Annie.

In the final book, Darren turns Darius from a vampaneze (bad) to a vampire (good) and goes to save humanity by confronting Steve. After they both die, Darren's soul is rescued by his half-sister, who forces their father, Mr. Tiny, to make him into a Little Person and send him back in time to the start of the first book, so that he can scare himself away from the Cirque du Freak, and avoid all the subsequent events of the novels.
7. Dimitri Belikov, Guardian of Lissa Dragomir and romantically involved with Rose Hathaway in Richelle Mead's series "Vampire Academy", misread the country names when he was looking at the list of finalists in the 2011 Eurovision Song Contest, and chose a contestant from a Balkan country whose name resembled that of the region (part of Russia) from which he originated. Which of these did he choose?

Answer: "Èaroban" ("Magical") by Nina from Serbia

Dimitri, originally from Siberia, is a dhampir (half human, half vampire) who struggles with his attraction to Rose for most of the series. In "Last Sacrifice" he helps Rose in her escape from prison after she was framed for the murder of Queen Tatiana. The actual murderer is revealed to be Tasha Ozzera, who wanted to remove Rose from the scene so that Dimitri might return the love she felt for him. At the end of the series, Rose and Dimitri are happily united and acting as Guardians for Lissa and Christian, who also appear to be destined for a happily-ever-after ending to their romance.

It should be noted that the Albanian and Macedonian candidates did not get past the semi-final stage of the 2011 Eurovision Song Contest, so Dimitri couldn't have chosen either of them on the night.
8. Jean-Claude, from the "Anita Blake: Vampire Hunter" series of novels by Laurell K. Hamilton, was thrilled to hear a song partially sung in his native language. Which of these was his choice in the 2011 Eurovision Song Contest?

Answer: "C'est Ma Vie", sung in French and English by Evelina Sasenko from Lithuania

Jean-Claude is one of Anita Blake's main love interests. Born to a family of French peasants around 400 to 600 years ago, he was turned into a vampire at the age of 30 by Belle Morte. Escaping her court, he travelled to America and settled in St Louis, where he has settled before the start of the series.

In "Guilty Pleasures", he manipulates Anita into killing Nikolaos, the Master Vampire of the area, and takes over that position. He is the owner of a vampire strip club called Guilty Pleasures, the source of the book's title, as well as several other clubs. Jean-Claude's French origin is referred to regularly, and he often throws French phrases into his conversation.
9. One of the guests decided that "Get You", sung in the 2011 Eurovision Song Contest by Alexey Vorobyov from Russia, was simply the bee's knees. Which of these literary vampires might have felt an instant empathy for a countryman?

Answer: Alexei Romanov, from "The Southern Vampire Mysteries"

Alexei Romanov is said to be the vampire form of the last crown prince of Russia, the only son of Emperor Nicholas II and Empress Alexandra Feodorovna. It was his family's reliance on Grigori Rasputin to cure his hemophilia that was one of the contributing factors to the downfall of the Romanovs and their execution during the Russian Revolution. There were persistent rumors of his having survived the mass execution in 1918, until the discovery of his bones in 2007. In Charlaine Harris's world, he remains emotionally scarred by these traumatic events, even after decades of vampiric existence.

Jasper Hale was from Texas, Bianca Solderini from Italy, and Abe Mazur from Turkey. None of them would have felt an affinity for a Russian singer.
10. In Stephenie Meyer's novel "New Moon", second book of the "Twilight" series, Edward Cullen flees to Tuscany believing that Bella has killed herself. Which of these songs did Edward definitely NOT support in the 2011 Eurovision Song Contest, because it reminded him of that desperately unhappy time in his life?

Answer: "Madness of Love" by Raphael Gualazzi from Italy

It is not only the Italian connection that reminds Edward of his misery, it is also the title of the tune. In despair over what he thought was the death of Bella, he flees to Volterra and tries to provoke the Volturi (a kind of vampire police) into killing him to end his misery. Alice Cullen and Bella arrive in time to save him, but the Volturi warn that Bella must become a vampire or die, and we know that we have not seen the last of them.

The final confrontation between the Volturi and Edward and Bella over the fate of their daughter Renesmee in "Breaking Dawn" leaves the loving couple to enjoy their future in peace.
