Charlaine Harris Trivia Questions

1. Who was the first character to realize suicides were occurring at the crossroads?

From Quiz
Night Shift

Answer: Lemuel

After the first suicide, a homeless woman named Tabby Ann Masterson, Lemuel hid the evidence. When the next one happened, Lem felt it was time to have a town meeting about it. Suicide number two was Joshua Allen. He was followed by Price Eggleston, who'd kidnapped Fiji in book two. After that, they took measures to prevent any more people from being talked into their own deaths. This did not stop animals from dying en masse at the crossroads of Witch Light Road and Davy Highway.

2. Which kind of local establishment was undergoing renovations at the start of the book?

From Quiz Day Shift

Answer: Hotel

It was the decades-long closed Rio Roca Fria Hotel, that sat at the intersection of Davy Highway and Witch Light Road. A bunch of trucks rolled into town carrying supplies, and Manfred noticed a woman (Eva Culhane) who appeared to be in charge getting out of a Lexus. They began removing the boards from the hotel's doors and windows. Manfred narrated that it reminded him of "a giant boot kicking a dormant anthill". The former name of the hotel translates into Cold River Rock Hotel. It reopened as Midnight Hotel, and catered to old folks "waiting" to get a permanent placement elsewhere, long term visitors, and had a few rooms left for short stays as well.

3. The newest resident to Midnight was a man named Manfred Bernardo. What sort of special ability did he claim to have?

From Quiz Midnight Crossroad

Answer: He was psychic

The first sentence of the book stated that you might pass through Midnight without noticing it. It was a small town with a Gas N Go, Home Cookin' Restaurant, a magic shop, Antique Gallery and Nail Salon, and a pawnshop. The fictional locale was said to be about ten minutes from the actual town of Davy, Texas (which became New Davy in the 1980s). Manfred was a young man who ran an online psychic business. He'd inherited his psychic abilities, though they were not always "on", and some of his online business was a bit of a sham. He first appeared in 2006, in Charlaine's "Harper Connelly" series. The three incorrect choices reflect characters from three Stephen King stories.

4. Who had a meeting with a devil in the book's Prologue?

From Quiz Dead Ever After

Answer: Copley Carmichael

Copley, a once successful New Orleans lumber tycoon, and his bodyguard Tyrese met with a devil to make a deal. They met at a crossroads (deemed traditional and reminiscent of the TV series "Supernatural") in January. The pair traded their souls for a wish granted. Since Copley brought Tyrese along, the devil allowed him a bonus wish. Copley first wanted his former success returned. The second wish he wanted to think about, and would cash in later. Tyrese wanted a particular woman to fall in love with him, though Copley and the devil thought it a foolish waste of a wish. Copley waited until June before he asked the devil to locate the cluviel dor. He wanted to use it to get his daughter Amelia back. Of course, he had no way of knowing Sookie had already used the magical item to bring Sam back to life.

5. Who was NOT at the Ladies Only Night with Sookie at Hooligans?

From Quiz Deadlocked

Answer: Arlene

Despite Arlene's likeability on the TV series "True Blood", she'd been long gone in the novels by this point. She'd turned against her co-workers and sold them out. She almost had Sookie killed several books back, and had not been heard from since that time. Tara was almost nine months pregnant with twins, one boy and one girl, and got quite a shock when she discovered her husband, JB du Rone, working as a stripper at the club! Also there with those two, were Holly, Michelle and Kennedy. Holly was engaged to Hoyt Fortenberry, Michelle was soon to be engaged to Jason Stackhouse, and Kennedy worked at Merlotte's with Sookie.

6. Very early on in the book, Sookie had her hair burned off at the ends. Where was she when she encountered a Molotov cocktail and lost her hair?

From Quiz Dead Reckoning

Answer: Merlotte's

Things at the bar at been slow as of late, due to more than one event. It could have been the fact that Sam, the bar owner, had come out to the world as a 'twoey', or shapeshifter. Sam was a true shifter, since he could change into whichever animal he wanted to become. Or, it could have been the opening of another, more raucous, bar 10 miles away called Vic's Redneck Roadhouse. Sookie spotted someone moving outside the bar at superhuman speed right before the flaming bottle was tossed through a window. Sam was able to prevent the bar from sustaining too much damage, but Sookie's apron caught fire and singed off a portion of her ponytail. Pam had to bring a hairdresser to Sookie's house to repair her hairstyle, which resulted in her losing about three inches of length. It was later discovered that Vic's and a place called Vampire's Kiss were both owned by the ruthless Victor Madden. He was trying to put both Sam and Eric's Fangtasia out of business.

7. Bill is made a vampire before the American Civil War.

From Quiz Spot The Difference in Sookie's World

Answer: Neither

Bill Compton, Sookie's first lover, fought in the Civil War in both the books and the TV series. In the books he reveals to Sookie that he was turned by Lorena in 1868, when he was in his late twenties. It is not until Book 10 ("Dead in the Family") that we find out exactly how Lorena turned him. The TV series depicts Bill as being turned whilst still in his army uniform. Despite these small differences, Bill's appearance and character in the TV series is very close to the books' description. He is serious, thoughtful, considerate and perhaps a little boring.

8. It was revealed that this female was pregnant early in the book.

From Quiz Dead in the Family

Answer: Tara

Tara was five months along in the opening segment of the book, which was divided into weeks instead of chapters. These weeks occurred in March, and Chapter 1 began with the subtitle "April". Tara and JB du Rone were set to become parents, and Tara wanted to be the most responsible parent, so she was reading "What to Expect When You're Expecting". Later on in the story, Claude told Tara she would be having twins, one of each. Sookie's roommate, Amelia Broadway, left at the beginning to head back to her home in New Orleans. It was time for her to get back to her life, and take her punishment for Bob Jessup's time as a house cat. Tanya Grissom was living with Hotshot local and head honcho Calvin Norris, and Jessica's a character in the TV series "True Blood".

9. Which character has Sookie not made love with?

From Quiz 'True Blood' Books Part 1

Answer: Sam Merlotte

Bill Compton was Sookie's first lover in the series (and her life), She made love with Quinn once but later said she regretted it, and she has made love with Eric several times before (although up until the last book he wasn't quite himself).

10. Whose mom was shot by her husband at the start of the novel, which led to Sookie running Merlotte's for a short time?

From Quiz Dead and Gone

Answer: Sam's

It was the dawn of a new day. The were-creatures decided to reveal themselves to humanity as the vampires had a couple of years prior. A werewolf from Alcide's group changed on live television and Sam and Tray changed inside Merlotte's. Sam's mom took the opportunity to reveal to her husband her true identity, which led to the man shooting her. Sam had to leave town for a few days and Sookie ran the bar in his absence. Arlene became unglued at the knowledge of Sam's true self, and quit the bar after years of service. This left Sookie in a bind to arrange enough wait staff, so she turned to an old enemy. In the HBO TV series "True Blood", Sam has no known biological kin in season one. He was shown to be adopted and shunned when he first turned into a dog.

11. Crystal Norris, Jason's girlfriend, experienced a tragedy. What happened to her?

From Quiz Definitely Dead

Answer: she had a miscarriage

Crystal refused to go to a hospital, even when the bleeding continued. Jason went to Sookie for help and she called Dr. Ludwig. The doctor agreed to travel to Crystal, and was able to save her. Ludwig had tended Sookie's wounds, and gave an order of therapy to heal her, after she was attacked by the maenad Callisto in "Living Dead in Dallas", book two. In "All Together Dead", we find out that Sookie had to pay Dr. Ludwig as well.

12. Someone was on the hunt, shooting innocents. What type of innocent was the common thread in these targets?

From Quiz Dead as a Doornail

Answer: shifters

The first person shot was also killed. It was a nineteen year old girl named Heather Kinman. Then, Calvin Norris of Hotshot was shot in the chest on his way to work. Finally, Sam was shot outside of Merlotte's, with Sookie there to witness and call for help. Calvin's injury was very serious, but he did recover. The shooter's M.O. was not clear to local law enforcement, as they did not know about the existence of shifters. Sookie alerted Alcide when he came to town to ask her to accompany him to a funeral. Sookie was shot later in the book, as she had smelled like a shifter to the killer.

13. Bill came to Sookie at the start of the book to say he'd be heading south. Where was Bill going?

From Quiz Dead to the World

Answer: Peru

Bill came by Sookie's house to say again how sorry he was for the Lorena situation, and to inform her that the queen was sending him to Peru to interview a fellow vampire. Sookie was not very nice to Bill, and they parted company on uncertain terms.

14. At the story's beginning, what occupation did Sookie have?

From Quiz Dead Until Dark

Answer: waitress

Sookie was a waitress at Merlotte's in Bon Temps, Louisiana. Her boss, Sam, had a secret to reveal late into the story.

15. Who is the main character?

From Quiz "Dead Until Dark" Characters

Answer: Sookie Stackhouse

Yes, Sookie Stackhouse is the heroine of the Southern Vampire Series. Can say too much about her--it might give away the rest of the quiz.

16. Sookie lives in what Louisiana town?

From Quiz Names and Places in the "Southern Vampire" Series

Answer: Bon Temps

Sookie lives near a cemetary in Bon Temps, LA. Bill Compton (Vampire Bill) lives next door off the same parish road.

17. In the first book, "Dead Until Dark," someone very close to Sookie is murdered. Who is it?

From Quiz Sookie Stackhouse: Barmaid and Heroine

Answer: her grandmother

Lafayette was killed in the second book, "Living Dead in Dallas." The other two characters are still alive as of "Club Dead."

18. Fiji's sister Kiki came to Midnight. From which other Texas city had Kiki traveled?

From Quiz Night Shift

Answer: Houston

All of these Texas cities mentioned are in close proximity to one another, but Kiki came from Houston. She left her second husband Marty to seek solace in Fiji, whom she'd had little do with since Fiji inherited their Aunt Mildred's home in Midnight. Kiki was a narcissist who was jealous of Fiji. Fiji finally had to order her to leave town. Fiji and Kiki were both named after the islands on which they were conceived. In Kiki's case, it was Waikiki in Hawaii.

19. Which Texas city did Manfred travel to, to do private readings, where he also ran into his fellow Midnighter Olivia?

From Quiz Day Shift

Answer: Dallas

It was five months after the beginning of the book, when everyone found out the local hotel would be reopened. He'd booked several private readings, so he checked into a fancier hotel than he normally would. He spotted Olivia as he was checking in, but she indicated silently that she did not want any obvious recognition from him. So, he said nothing, but spotted her later inside the hotel dining room. She was eating with two other people, who later died. The next day she talked with him briefly before going about her business. Manfred was now even more confused as to why Olivia's job left her frequently battered and bruised, and suspected she had killed the couple with whom she'd dined.

20. When Manfred arrived in town, there was already a mystery afoot. What was the name of the young woman who had disappeared mysteriously?

From Quiz Midnight Crossroad

Answer: Aubrey

Aubrey Hamilton was the girlfriend of Bobo, the local pawnshop owner. She'd vanished one day without explanation, leaving Bobo confused and heartbroken. It wasn't long before her body was discovered during a social gathering. Bobo was initially a suspect, but there was no evidence tying him to the crime. He'd been out of town when she disappeared, and was visibly saddened by her death. She had not gained many friends during her time in Midnight, so there were several possibilities on who may have killed her.

21. Who did Johan Glassport have released from prison?

From Quiz Dead Ever After

Answer: Arlene Fowler

Johan was often described as being "medium" in appearance. But, Sookie knew that he was an amoral lawyer she'd met at the vampire summit back in "All Together Daed". That was the same gathering that ended in a bombing disaster. Arlene was released from prison on a huge bail. She was instructed to have one conversation with Sookie, and afterward all of her financial woes would be erased. That was not exactly how it worked out.

22. Who called Sookie and told her to arrive an hour later than originally planned to Eric's party for Felipe de Castro?

From Quiz Deadlocked

Answer: Mustapha Khan

When Sookie did arrive, Pam was very happy to see her. Pam had told Sookie to come at 8 p.m. Mustapha called Sookie a bit later and said to make it 9 p.m. instead. On "True Blood", Pam has been depicted as hating Sookie. In the books, Pam felt disinterest and slight disdain before moving on to truly caring about Sookie and their friendship. When Sookie got to Eric's home, Pam had just returned from an alcohol run that Mustapha had sent her on.

23. Who sent Jack and Lily Leeds to Merlotte's to warn Sookie about Sandra Pelt?

From Quiz Dead Reckoning

Answer: Desmond Cataliades

Mr. Cataliades was a demon lawyer that Sookie had met after the death of her cousin Hadley. So, when the private investigators came into the bar on his instruction, Sookie believed them. She'd met the couple previously after the Pelts hired them to investigate the disappearance of their daughter Debbie, whom Sookie had killed in self-defense in book four. They warned Sookie that Sandra Pelt, Debbie's sister, had been released from prison. Sookie hadn't realized the vicious young woman had been sent away for attacking her cousin, who'd been left a portion of her late parents' estate. Soon after their warning, a group of Sandra's hired goons arrived to try and kill Sookie. Between Sam, the Leeds, and Jannalynn, Sookie's life was saved. Sandra later admitted that the goons and the firebombing were all attempts by her to kill Sookie.

24. Sam was bought up by his natural parents.

From Quiz Spot The Difference in Sookie's World

Answer: Books only

Sam is a shape shifter, his preferred shape being a rough collie dog. He was bought up by his parents, who were both shifters, though his father later died. In Book 9 ("Dead and Gone") we learn that when Sam's mother revealed herself as a shifter, Sam's stepfather shot and wounded her. In the TV series, Sam is presented as being bought up by foster parents, who moved house and left him behind when they discovered his shape shifting abilities, which developed with puberty.

25. Who first suggested that it was time to kill Victor Madden, Eric's vampire boss?

From Quiz Dead in the Family

Answer: Sookie

It was in book eight that Victor had forced Eric to submit to his allegiance. In a coup, plotted out by Vegas vamp Felipe de Castro, many vampires had been assassinated in order for the Vegas King to take control of Louisiana and Mississippi. Among the losses were Queen Sophie and all area sheriffs except for Eric Northman. The final showdown took place at Sookie's home, and if Eric hadn't agreed fealty, the entire gang in her home would have been killed. In this book, during an intimate moment, Sookie told Eric "we have to kill Victor". Later, she and Pam were discussing the topic, and Sookie discovered that she and Pam were on the same page. They knew though, that they had to make sure Felipe (who promised to protect Sookie) was also less than thrilled with Victor's ambitious aspirations before they made a move. Kill Victor without that being true, and Felipe would kill them all.

26. How did Sam Merlotte get the money to buy his bar?

From Quiz 'True Blood' Books Part 1

Answer: He received the money when his dad died.

Sam Merlotte never did rob a bank and he has never been rich. In the HBO series 'True Blood' he stole money from the maenad named Maryann Forrester.

27. Who came to Bon Temps early in the story and told Sookie that her cousin Hadley had left behind a child?

From Quiz From Dead to Worse

Answer: Copley Carmichael

Copley "call me Cope" Carmichael was Amelia Broadway's father. Amelia was tense about his visit, and spent copious amounts of time cleaning and cooking for him. The man seemed absolutely delighted at the chance to shock Sookie, whom he'd also done a background check on before his arrival. Sookie could read him easily, and broke a record at cool so as not to allow him the pleasure of upsetting her in any way. From Charlaine Harris' description and my own imagination, I could see George Hamilton playing the part of this wealthy cad. Later into the book, Sookie did him a favor (though it was really for Amelia) by getting him an interview with Sandy after the coup. Eric Sinclair is Betsy Taylor's vampire king in MaryJanice Davidson's "Dead" series.

28. What did Quinn promise Sookie, before she agreed to consummate their romance?

From Quiz All Together Dead

Answer: He was taking off an entire month after his current job ended

Sookie and Quinn had fought their physical attraction, mostly, for the span of over two books. She really wanted to take the next step, but was not interested in sporadic get-togethers. He assured her he wanted more than just a casual relationship, and that he'd spend an entire month with her after his job ended.

29. Which play did Sookie and Quinn go see on their first date?

From Quiz Definitely Dead

Answer: The Producers

Quinn was able to procure very good seats to the show, which was held at the Strand Theater in Shreveport. During their date they were attacked by teen-aged werewolves, newly bitten and on a mission. The young werewolves were killed afterward, during their stint in jail. It wasn't until later that Sookie figured out exactly who had sent the animals after her. Sandra Pelt, sister of Debbie Pelt, had turned the boys into wolves and sent them after Sookie. Real world fun fact: Construction on the Strand Theater began in 1923 by two families. They were the Saenger and Ehrlich brothers. In 1977 the theater was placed on the National Register of Historic Places and in 1980 it had a grand re-opening after a massive renovation.

30. What was the ethnicity of Dawson, the guard outside of Calvin Norris' hospital room?

From Quiz Dead as a Doornail

Answer: werewolf

Dawson was a huge shifter built like a construction worker. Jason took Sookie to see Calvin at the hospital, but Calvin would only let Sookie enter his room. While inside, Calvin revealed to her that his community (werepanthers) suspected newly changed Jason of being the shooter. She begged Calvin to protect Jason from persecution and death, and explained his exhilaration at his new shifter status. It was also strange to see a werewolf guarding the room of a werepanther, as the wolves saw themselves as the true Weres. The killer shot Dawson while he was protecting Sookie.
