Answer: Sherlock Holmes

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle bought us the legendary Sherlock Holmes and his sidekick, Dr Watson. From his house at 221B Baker Street in London, Sherlock went on to solve many murders and mysteries, including "The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes" (1892) and "The Hound of the Baskervilles" (1902).

Answer: Allan Quatermain

Allan Quatermain was a character introduced to us in 1885 by the writer H. Rider Haggard. The most famous of his stories was "King Solomon's Mines", which told us of the adventurous Quatermain who, with a group of other men, followed a map leading to hidden treasures in Africa.

"Schindler's Ark" was written by Thomas Keneally and first published in 1982. It told the true story of Oskar Schindler, a German businessman who set up a factory in Poland, and the Czech Republic, during World War II with a workforce of Jews. By the end of the war, Schindler had saved over 1,200 Jews from the gas chambers.

One such book was "Le Morte d'Arthur" which was written by Thomas Malory and first published in 1485. "The Lady of the Lake" was a poem written in 1810 by Walter Scott which built on the romantic legend of the sword Excalibur, and of taking Arthur by boat to Avalon upon his death.

Once he had dropped his pride, Darcy was quoted as saying "I have been meditating on the very great pleasure which a pair of fine eyes in the face of a pretty woman can bestow". Lucky Elizabeth!

Hercule Poirot was introduced to us by the famous crime writer, Agatha Christie. He featured in "Peril at End House" (1932), "Murder on the Orient Express" (1934) and "Death on the Nile" (1937). Christie once wrote "Why not make my detective a Belgian? I could see him as a tidy little man, always arranging things, liking things in pairs, liking things square instead of round. And he should be brainy, he should have little grey cells of the mind."

Horatio Hornblower was a fictional character created by writer C. S. Forester, the same author who bought us the 1935 story "The African Queen", made famous in film by Humphrey Bogart. Hornblower was a tone deaf junior captain for the Royal Navy when we first met him, suffering from chronic seasickness, but intelligent, daring and adventurous at the same time. The first book to feature this hero was called "The Happy Return" and published in 1937. The last book was a short story published forty years later in 1967, and featured Hornblower as a retired Admiral of the Fleet.

Edmond Dantes was the key protagonist in the 1844 book written by Alexandre Dumas, "The Count of Monte Cristo". The story told of Edmond Dantes who was falsely arrested and incarcerated in Château d'If, an island off the coast of France. Once he escaped, he located a secret stash of treasure and assumed the identity of The Count of Monte Cristo. He then wagered his revenge on the people who imprisoned him.
