Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Meggie tells the guards that she is taking something to the prisoners in the stable. What is it?

Answer: Milk

Meggie tends to Mo's wounds with the moss-woman. Both Mo and Meggie recognise each other, and try to hide their joy. Dustfinger gets Meggie to pass a message onto Resa. Every prisoner who is able to, must rush into the Wayless Wood, to the left, the next day.

There will be a distraction for the guards. While Farid distracts the guards by playing with fire, Dustfinger frees the Black Prince and his bear.
2. Who hides the escaped children in a hollow tree, from the Adderhead's men?

Answer: Dustfinger

All the prisoners who are able to, run into the Wayless Wood when a burning tree trunk blocks the way of the Adderhead's men. Resa stays with the injured Mo. Meggie is disappointed that her parents did not escape. The Black Prince says he will make sure Mo is not hanged. Meggie tells Dustfinger that she wrote to Fenoglio, and sent the letter with Cloud-Dancer. Fenoglio is the only one who can help Resa and Mo.
3. Where does Fenoglio speak to Roxane?

Answer: Castle gardens

Fenoglio is finding it difficult to write the words that Meggie wants. Prince Cosimo the Fair is preparing for war. Violante comes to see Fenoglio at night. She is very lonely - neither Cosimo nor Jacopo love her. Brianna, her maid, is spending more and more time with Cosimo, rather than with her. Violante wants Fenoglio to write for Roxane, and bring her to the castle. Roxane might be able to talk to Brianna, and she is welcome to any flowers and herbs from the castle garden. Roxane says she can't persuade Brianna to spend time with Violante rather than Cosimo. Brianna won't listen to her. Brianna has also always been in love with Prince Cosimo. Roxane plans to go and find Dustfinger. Dustfinger is in danger now that Basta is back.

She agrees to take a letter for Meggie, from Fenoglio.
4. What does Dustfinger tell Farid to do, while he and Meggie are getting Fenoglio's message from the Spelt-mill?

Answer: Fill the water bottles

Mo and Resa are separated. Resa is sent to the dungeons. The soldiers tell Resa that she will be able to watch the Bluejay's execution. When Farid is filling the bottles, he sees a dead man in the water - it looks like the messenger that Fenoglio sent.

Unfortunately, Basta and Slasher are waiting inside the Spelt-mill for Dustfinger and Meggie. Farid makes straw burn. Farid, Meggie and Dustfinger escape from the inferno, although Dustfinger has hurt his leg. Basta and Slasher are left in the inferno.
5. What is the name of Dustfinger's friend, the physician?

Answer: The Barn Owl

Dustfinger says he and Farid need to see a physician - Farid's fingers are burnt, and Dustfinger's leg is badly wounded. They will go to the best physician Dustfinger knows. Prince Cosimo the Fair is more or less ready for war. Fenoglio has written the words for Meggie and gives the letter to Roxane, who is setting off, after Dustfinger, alone. Fenoglio also gives her a brief outline of where Dustfinger had been for ten years. Dustfinger and Farid's wounds are tended to at the Infirmary. Dustfinger has known the Barn Owl for many years.

Healers have been sent to the Castle of the Night - they have tended to two of the Adderhead's men, bitten by fire. These are obviously Slasher and Basta. Mo is also being tended to. The Healers pretend to the Adderhead that Mo is more injured than he really is, to give Mo more time.
6. Where is Meggie, when Roxane arrives?

Answer: On the beach

Mortola knows only too well that Mo isn't the Bluejay. But she isn't going to tell the Adderhead this. She will get her wish; Mo will die. Mortola has even convinced the Adderhead that Meggie is a witch, by giving him a photograph of Meggie, which was in Elinor's house. Meggie reads the letter that Fenoglio has sent her, and the story to change everything. She plans to read it aloud straight away.
7. Who, apart from Farid, had Dustfinger shown how water and fire play together?

Answer: Roxane

The Adderhead has three daughters, and his fifth wife is pregnant. He wants the new child to be a boy. Meggie hasn't been reading aloud the story when the Adderhead's men come to take her and the Barn Owl up to the Castle of the Night. One of the Infirmary workers had told the Adderhead where Dustfinger, Farid and Meggie were.

The Piper had promised her a job at the castle. There is no sign of Farid and Dustfinger. Dustfinger throws fire into the sea. When the blazing foam returns to the shore, a fairy covers him with soot.

After four attempts, Farads succeeds too. Dustfinger tells Farid to spread the soot all over his chest, legs, arms and face. It will make them invisible until sunrise. They head for the Castle of the Night.
8. What instrument is the Piper playing, when Meggie is brought to the Adderhead's dining room?

Answer: Lute

Mortola, Basta and Slasher are also at the Adderhead's feast. Basta and Slasher look the worse for wear after the fire at the Spelt-mill. Meggie has a deal for the Adderhead. Mo is a bookbinder and an enchanter. He can make the Adderhead immortal. Mo will bind a book for the Adderhead, a book with five hundred blank pages.

After the Adderhead has written his name on the first page, nothing will be able to kill him. Meggie knows all this because Fenoglio had written it. But Meggie doesn't tell the Adderhead that if someone writes three other words into the book - Heart, Spell and Death - it will kill the Adderhead. Both Mortola and Firefox say Meggie is lying.

But the Adderhead tells Firefox to take Meggie to her father. Mortola sends a message to Firefox and tells him to search Meggie for paper with words on. Meggie hands over Fenoglio's story.
9. Mo and Meggie often play a game, imagining themselves somewhere else. Where does Meggie imagine herself and Mo?

Answer: Balbulus's workshop

Dustfinger sends Farid into the kitchens, to overhear the gossiping of the servants. Meanwhile Dustfinger manages to have a few words with Resa. Resa says it will take three or four weeks for Mo to bind a book. She asks Dustfinger to tell Mo she's well.

The Barn Owl is tending to the sick prisoners before he is put in the dungeons. Mo and Meggie are reunited. Meggie tells Mo about Fenoglio's story about the Adderhead, how Mo is really the Bluejay and how Farid loves her.
10. Who killed Prince Cosimo the Fair?

Answer: Firefox

Dustfinger tells Farid that Meggie and Mo will be safe for a few weeks, while Mo binds the book. He wants to tell the Black Prince about Sootbird. Roxane has followed them to the castle. She will take Dustfinger to the Black Prince. Farid reminds Dustfinger that they go before sunrise. Dustfinger, Farid and Roxane find the Black Prince. Cosimo is nearly ready for war; The Black Prince has a mask, with bluejay feathers on it.

He plans to save Mo from the gallows. There is a great battle. A lot of Cosimo's men are also killed.
11. What colour are the berries on the bitterberry tree?

Answer: Red

None of the Black Prince's men believe Fenoglio created a new Prince Cosimo. Fenoglio is amazed to see Dustfinger still alive. Fenoglio is extremely disheartened and swears he will never write another word again. The Adderhead's wife has given birth to a son.

The Adderhead announces that he will ensure kindness and mercy by setting free all his prisoners, including the Bluejay. Dustfinger and the Black Prince don't believe this of course. The robbers head for a disused mine, near the Castle of the Night. Apparently, the Adderhead will allow the prisoners to go to the harbour and board a ship.

The Black Prince believes this will be a slave ship.
12. Who does the Adderhead make write their name into Mo's book, first?

Answer: Firefox

Mo and Meggie take the book to the Adderhead. To test its immortality, the Adderhead makes Firefox write his real name in the book, and then get a soldier to run a sword through Firefox. Firefox is truly immortal - until the Adderhead gets Taddeo to write those three extra words - Heart, Spell and Death. Firefox dies instantly.

This is proof to the Adderhead. He writes his name in the book, after Firebox's name and the three words are removed. Mo, Meggie, Resa and the other prisoners are freed. Mo takes Firebox's sword with him.
13. Who kills Basta?

Answer: Mo

Basta's men have been waiting to ambush the prisoners. The Black Prince's men fight Basta's men; Farid and Dustfinger summon fire to help them. Basta throws his knife at Farid and it kills him. Mo kills Basta with Firebox's sword.
14. Who is Fenoglio going to write about, so they can be brought into the Inkworld?

Answer: Orpheus

The White Women fear fire yet long for its warmth. Dustfinger does a deal with them. If they allow Farid to come back alive, he will go with them. Fenoglio refuses to write a story to bring Dustfinger back, when Farid begs him. Farid says Orpheus will. Mo tells the Black Prince that he made the Adderhead immortal.

But he did something to the book that will make the Adderhead die in a few weeks.
15. Where are Meggie, Mo and Resa heading?

Answer: Ombra

Orpheus is delighted to be in the Inkworld. He seems very upset to learn that Dustfinger is dead. He is more than willing to read him back to life. However Roxane is going to take Dustfinger's body back to Ombra and preserve the body. She won't tell anyone where she is taking him. She blames Farid for Dustfinger's death. Orpheus says he will need a servant, and Farid reluctantly agrees to serve him. Farid promises Meggie that he'll bring Dustfinger back.
