Rukia is one of the main characters in 'Bleach', one of the first characters created by Tite Kubo, and a shinigami who encounters Ichigo while searching for a Hollow and gives him her powers, turning him into a substitute shinigami. She takes up residence in his wardrobe while she recovers her powers, using an artificial body called a gigai in order to manifest in the human world, and enrols at his high school.

She is sentenced to death for giving Ichigo her powers, but Ichigo and his friends rescue her; the execution was engineered by Sousuke Aizen, who wanted to retrieve the Hogyoku (a powerful object that gives shinigami Hollow powers) from her body, and manages to get it back by other means. She later helps Ichigo and his friends rescue Orihime Inoue, who has been captured by Aizen's forces. Her Zanpakuto is Sode no Shirayuki, which gives her the power to manipulate ice; its moves are called 'dances' and it is considered to be one of the most beautiful Zanpakutos because of its pure white colour and the ribbon on its hilt. It manifests as a yuki-onna, or snow woman.

Rukia later becomes the Lieutenant of the 13th Division, following in the footsteps of her late mentor Kaien Shiba. During the Quincy attack on Soul Society, she unlocks her Bankai, Hakka no Togame, which makes her hair turn white. In the epilogue, she is Captain of the Thirteenth Division and married to Renji; they have a daughter, Ichika.

Renji Abarai is the Lieutenant of the Sixth Division and an old friend and classmate of Rukia, with long red hair and facial tattoos. He has a reputation among fans as a 'jobber' due to losing many fights and, unlike Rukia, is terrible at kidou. His Zanpakuto is Zabimaru, a sword with a flat blade with spikes sticking out. Its manifested form is a white baboon with a snake for a tail; it also has a humanoid variant consisting of a little boy with fangs (the snake) and a hairy woman (the monkey) chained together. Renji's Bankai is Hihiou Zabimaru, where it turns into a snake monster while Renji gains a fur coat; it later evolves into Souou Zabimaru.

Although Renji is one of Ichigo's enemies at first, blaming Ichigo for Rukia's sentence, he later becomes an ally. He helps rescue Rukia from her execution after being badly beaten by his captain Byakuya, but is cut down by Aizen after Aizen's betrayal. He and Uryuu Ishida fight Szayelaporro Granz, the Eighth Espada, but have to be rescued by Mayuri Kurotuschi, the Twelfth Division Captain. After the timeskip, he fights the Fullbringer Jackie Tristan and manages to beat her, thanks to his training. He is badly injured in the Quincy invasion and sent to the Royal Palace to recover, and it is there that he unlocks Souou Zabimaru.

Shunsui is Captain of the Eighth Division and wears a conical hat and a pink flowery haori. He is a drinker and womaniser, but a lot more powerful than he appears. He attacks Chad when he comes to Soul Society with Ichigo, but spares his life and has him healed by the Fourth Division. Shunsuo fights Coyote Starrk, the First Espada, during the attack on the fake Karakura Town and defeats him, but is badly injured by Aizen. His Zanpakuto is Katen Kyoukotsu, a pair of curved swords with powers based on children's games, such as stepping on shadows. Its Bankai form is Katen Kyoukotsu: Kuromatsu Shinju, which is based on a four-act tragic play and is extremely risky due to potentially causing collateral damage. Katen manifests as a purple-haired courtesan with an eyepatch, while Kyoukotsu manifests as a purple-haired masked female ninja.

After the original Captain Commander Yamamoto is murdered by Yhwach in the Quincy invasion, Shunsui become the new Captain Commander. He wears an eye patch after Robert Accutrone of the Sternritter shoots his eye out. He orders Unohana to train Kenpachi in a death battle. When the Sternritter return, Shunsui fights Lille Barro with his Bankai, but is unable to kill him, just wound him severely. Shunsui himself is injured, but survives the attack and is seen drinking sake at Ukitake's grave in the epilogue.

Answer: 3rd Division

Gin Ichimaru is Captain of the Third Division and one of the three treacherous Captains, along with Sousuke Aizen and Kaname Tousen. A silver-haired man with a foxy face and almost permanently closed eyes, he is something of a troll and enjoys messing with people; for instance, he offers to rescue Rukia, only to tell her he was joking, breaking her resolve. Originally Aizen's Lieutenant in the Fifth Division, he replaces Rose Oturobashi as Captain of the Third Division when Rose is turned into a Hollow hybrid by Aizen and forced to leave Soul Society. His Zanpakuto is Shinso, an extending wakizashi. Its Bankai form is Kamishini no Yari, which can cut through buildings, although its true power is turning into poisoned dust.

Gin wears the custom white uniform of the Arrancar while working with Aizen. During the attack on the fake Karakura Town, Gin cuts Hiyori Sarugaki of the Vizards in half with Shinso. When he and Aizen go to the real Karakura Town, Gin attacks Rangiku Matsumoto of the Tenth Division and leaves her for dead. He then reveals that he has been planning to betray Aizen all along; Gin is in love with Matsumoto and has been plotting revenge on Aizen for stealing part of her soul to make the Hogyoku. He tries to kill Aizen by turning a chip of Kamishini no Yari in Aizen's heart into poison, but Aizen survives the attack and kills him, and he dies in Matsumoto's arms. After the timeskip, Rose gets his old job back.

Jyuushirou Ukitake is Captain of the 13th Division and a long-time friend of Shunsui Kyouraku; they are the longest-serving Captains among the shinigami next to Yamamoto. He is chronically ill with a lung disease that turned his hair white (Kubo partially based him on Souji Okita, the captain of the first squad of the Shinsengumi, who died of tuberculosis). His Zanpakuto is Sougyo no Kotowari, a pair of javelin-like blades joined by a chain, which can absorb an enemy's power and fire it back out at them. It manifests in the form of twin boys in priests' outfits. In the attack on the fake Karakura Town, Ukitake fights Lilynette Gingerback and Coyote Starrk, and is later impaled by Wonderweiss Margela.

As a child, Ukitake's parents sacrificed his lungs to Mimihagi, a god shaped like a hand, in order to save his life. Following the death of the Soul King at the hands of Ichigo, Ukitake sacrifices the rest of his body to Mimihagi. Shadows appear on his body while Mimihagi envelops the Soul King's corpse; however, Yhwach absorbs Mimihagi, killing Ukitake. Twelve years after his death, the shinigami send his soul to Hell, where he protects Ichigo from Szayelaporro Granz by impaling him on Sougyo no Kotowari.

Answer: 4th Division

Hanataro Yamada is a timid young medic in the Fourth Division and their Seventh Seat. He is notably one of the few shinigami who isn't a Captain or Lieutenant, but whose Zanpakuto's Shikai form is shown. Hisagomaru, Hanataro's Zanpakuto, is an unusual kind of Zanpakuto in that it heals people; it has a blue handle and a bag attached to it, and a gauge on its side fills up as it heals. When the gauge is full, it turns into a scalpel, Akeiro Hisagomaru. It manifests as a little one-eyed robot.

Ichigo tries to take Hanataro hostage in front of a group of shinigami, only for them to reveal they are from the Eleventh Division, they hate the Fourth Division and they see Hanataro as weak and expendable. Hanataro helps Ichigo and Ganju Shiba find Rukia's prison cell. He is arrested for collaborating with Ichigo, but Rikichi Yuki of the Sixth Division breaks him out of prison so he can heal the injured Renji. During the Quincy attack, he heals the wounded. He is later promoted to Third Seat.

Izuru Kira is Gin's Lieutenant, a gloomy man who writes haiku, and is fiercely loyal to Gin and takes his betrayal hard. He was in the same class as Renji Abarai and Momo Hinamori, Aizen's Lieutenant. During the Soul Society arc, Aizen fakes his death and an enraged Momo blames Gin and attacks him, but Kira defends him. Captain Hitsugaya has him imprisoned, but Gin gets him out. Kira's Zanpakuto is Wabisuke, a square hook-shaped sword that doubles the weight of anything it hits; if it hits a sword, the sword becomes heavier until its wielder is barely able to stand. The hook part - as Kira demonstrates on the Arrancar Avirama Redder - is for decapitating enemies. It manifests as a long-haired emaciated man carrying a ball and chain.

Kira and Tetsuzaemon Iba of the Seventh Division are both wounded by Aizen, who is disguised as Momo, in the fake Karakura Town. After Rose's return as Third Division Captain, Kira stays on as Lieutenant. In the Quincy attack on Soul Society, Kira is seemingly killed after Bazz-B of the Sternritter blows a hole in his chest, but Mayuri resurrects him as a zombie cyborg, with metal rods in the hole. He kills Lille Barro's clones.

Answer: 6th Division

Byakuya is from a noble family and the grandson Ginrei Kuchiki, of the previous Sixth Division Captain. He is also Rukia's adopted brother, as he was married to her sister and took Rukia in when she died. Byakuya is cold and formal and a stickler for obeying the law, and comes to arrest Rukia with Renji, but does care for Rukia deep down; when Zommari, the Seventh Espada, tries to use Rukia's unconscious body against Byakuya, Byakuya wastes no time in killing him. His Zanpakuto is Senbonzakura, which can disintegrate into metal shards like sakura petals. It manifests as a samurai and its Bankai form is Senbonzakura Kageyoshi, in which it summons several giant blades that disintegrate in a similar manner.

In the Fullbringer arc, Byakuya fights Shuukurou Tsukishima. When the Quincy invade Soul Society, Äs Nödt of the Sternritter steals Byakuya's Bankai and uses it against him. Byakuya, thinking he is going to die, begs Ichigo to protect Soul Society. Byakuya is taken to the Royal Palace, where he recovers in the healing pools. In the epilogue, he is still Sixth Division Captain.

Nanao Ise is Shunsui's Lieutenant in the Eighth Division and is the opposite of him in terms of personality: she is stern and businesslike and offers to kill Chad when Shunsui has injured him. She is later revealed to be Shunsui's niece, the daughter of his older brother and the head of the cursed Ise clan. As a child, she was close to Shunsui's previous Lieutenant, Lisa Yadomaru, who used to read to her. Her Zanpakuto is Shinken Hakkyouken, which she inherited from her mother; it is a flat bladeless sword covered in diamonds, sealed inside Shunsui's Kyokotsu. It has reflective abilities and Nanao uses it to reflect Lille Barro's power back at him and disintegrate him.

Nanao follows Shunsui to the First Division as his Lieutenant, following the death of Yamamoto and his Lieutenant, Choujirou Sasakibe, who was one of the first casualties of the Quincy invasion.

Answer: 4th Division

Retsu Unohana is Captain of the Fourth Division and the strongest healer in Soul Society. She is a kind, motherly woman, but many people are frightened of her and it is hinted she has a dark side. Her Zanpakuto is Minazuki, which can turn into a giant flying manta ray that heals people inside its belly. Its Bankai form is also called Minazuki, but written with different characters; in this form, it turns into a blood-like substance that can heal as well as harm, and turn into small blades.

Unohana is enlisted by Shunsui to train Kenpachi Zaraki during the Quincy invasion, and it is then that the reader learns why she is so feared; the braid she wears down her chest covers a neck scar that Zaraki gave her as a child, and she was the first Kenpachi, Yachiru Unohana, a notorious criminal. (Kubo draws Unohana in a much more eerie manner at this point, with her hair down and shadows under her eyes.) She is the person after whom Zaraki named his adopted daughter Yachiru. She repeatedly wounds and heals Zaraki as the two fight. Zaraki finally lands a fatal blow on her and she dies in his arms. After her death, she goes to Hell and Isane Kotetsu, her Lieutenant, replaces her as Captain.
