Dervish and Grubbs' parents like to play chess so they are good enough to play Lord Loss if they need to. Both Dervish and Grubbs' parents faced Lord Loss. Grubbs' father Cal played chess while his mother Sharon fought. The battle is presumed to be lost because Sharon was not strong enough in the battle. Dervish started on the boards and was winning but as Grubbs was losing the fight they swapped places. Grubbs then won the chess games that Dervish had started.

Dervish's soul goes to the Demonata universe to battle Lord Loss. The rules of the competition are that whoever fights Artery and Vein, fights Lord Loss. Grubbs starts out against Vein and Artery but when Grubbs starts to lose he and Dervish switch places (this is not part of the rules and not usually allowed but as Lord Loss wants Grubbs to suffer he agrees).

As they switched they could choose who went to battle Lord Loss. Bill-E was a werewolf at the time and Meera was unconcious so it couldn't be them.
