Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of these statements regarding newly laid dragon eggs (on Pern) is *not* true?

Answer: Newly laid eggs are approximately the size of a basketball

The Queen dragon will go to the hatching ground, where the sands of the floor are heated, and lay her eggs. If there should be a precious Queen egg, it is immediately apparent as it is larger than the other eggs, and the Queen dragon will put it to one side for special attention while it incubates. Newly laid eggs have soft shells, which harden on the hot sands until hatching. Dragon eggs are large, a queen egg can be between three and four feet high, with the other colours being slightly smaller.
2. If you were a candidate at a Hatching in a Weyr on Pern, how would you be dressed for the occasion?

Answer: A plain white robe with a belt

Hatching ceremonies are both a very important, and a very joyous occasion. As each dragonet emerges from its shell, it will search the hatching grounds for the one person who will become its life partner. Impression binds the minds of dragon and rider forever, and they are telepathic and empathic with each other from that moment on, until one of them dies.
3. Apart from the golden Queens, which other colour of dragons are female?

Answer: Green

Green dragons are female but infertile. Only the golden Queens can lay eggs and continue the species. When F'lar comes to power at Benden, there are no female riders, other than Lessa, who Impresses Ramoth, the last living Queen dragon.
After the unorthodox Impression of green Path by Mirrim, girls are again accepted as candidates, and female dragonriders become more common, as they were in the early days of the settlement of Pern.
4. After a dragonet has been bathed, what else must a Rider do, to keep it comfortable?

Answer: Oil it

Dragonets grow so fast that their skin is prone to splitting. This can be disastrous when the dragon has to teleport Between, so oiling the skin after bathing each day is essential. Adult dragons must be oiled too, to ensure there are no patches on their hide, again so the dreadful cold of Between won't damage them.
5. How do the Weyrfolk and Candidates know when Hatching is imminent?

Answer: The Dragons make a special humming noise

The Riders know approximately when the eggs are due to hatch. When Hatching is imminent, the dragons make a humming noise which reverberates throughout the whole Weyr. When this happens, everyone rushes to the Hatching Ground, and the Candidates don their white robes and take their places on the sands, near the eggs.
6. Which of these statements is true regarding Candidates for Impression of a dragon on Pern?

Answer: Once Impression is made, there is nothing that can be done to alter the dragon's choice

Candidates need to be old enough to care for their dragonet, and to be mature enough to fight thread when the dragonet is fully grown. There is a maximum age too, as when the rider dies the dragon will suicide, so an older rider would lead to a shorter life for their dragon. Nobody has ever Impressed more than one dragon, although it is possible to Impress multiple firelizards. The choice of lifemate and rider is always, irrevocably, up to the dragon. If it rejects all the Candidates presented at the Hatching, everyone in the ground hopes that it will choose them. Whoever the dragon wants must accept the Impression, even if they never thought they would ever do such a thing.
7. The dragons of Pern fly to fight thread when it falls. What is different about the way the Queen dragons do this?

Answer: Their riders carry flame throwers, Queens do not flame themselves

In order to flame, a dragon must chew 'firestone', and this is what makes the green dragon females infertile. Queens must breed, so they cannot chew firestone. The Queen riders carry flamethrowers in the 'Queen's Wing'. They fly below the other wings during Threadfall, and mop up any stray threads the other dragons might miss.
8. Over the years on Pern, several Weyrwomen have been famous for their ability to hear and talk to all the dragons, rather than just their own. Which of these was NOT one of them?

Answer: Kylara

Kylara was (in)famous as one of the worst Weyrwomen ever. Her disgraceful behaviour culminated in a fight between her Queen Prideth, and Brekke's Queen Wirenth, in which both dragons died. Brekke was nursed back to health by her friends and her firelizards, but Kylara was left insane when the Queens died. Very few riders have ever survived the death of their dragon.

The bond is so strong that when the dragon dies, the rider loses the will to live. A dragon will always suicide Between when the rider dies, unless it is a Queen dragon with a clutch of eggs to tend.

In that case, the Queen will wait until after the Hatching, and then go Between.
9. As well as going Between places when they teleport, can dragons also travel in time?

Answer: Yes

As long as the rider has clear co-ordinates in mind when they set out, dragons can travel through time as well as space. The co-ordinates must be very clear, otherwise disaster can befall the pair - they could end up inside something solid, or in a collision, or emerge into a threadfall.
10. Who names a newly hatched dragonet?

Answer: It hatches already knowing its own name

All newly hatched dragonets know their own name. The moment of Impression occurs when rider and dragonet look into each other's eyes and the dragonet tells the rider its name. This is usually followed by an overwhelming sensation of hunger, as all dragonets are born starving. The first task of any newly Impressed rider is to feed their dragonet.
