Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. John Perry does two things on his seventy-fifth birthday. One is joining up, but what is the other?

Answer: Visits his wife's grave to say goodbye before he leaves Earth

Once an enlistee leaves Earth for training and induction into the Colonial Defence Force they can never return. When they join up they become 'officially dead' and get 72 hours to put their affairs in order before departure.
John and his wife Kathy originally intended to join up together but she died some years earlier and he decides to go alone.
2. When Leon Deak dies just before the enlistees are due to be made young again, the doctor comments that he will be "a last minute recruit for the ____ Brigades". Which 'Brigades' does he mention?

Answer: Ghost

Whereas most recruit's new bodies are made using their own DNA, anyone who has died in the ten years between giving their sample (when they fill in an 'intention to enlist' form) and enlistment has their DNA used to make bodies for the soldiers of the Ghost Brigades.
3. Apart from the fact he is young again, what is the most obvious difference between John's new body and his old one?

Answer: Green skin

The new bodies have green skin as they have a chlorophyll molecule genetically engineered into them to use available light as a food/energy source.
They are also stronger, faster, and generally improved over a 'normal' human body. Not only are the recruits young again, they are much fitter and stronger than they ever were before, and spend three days partying to prove it to themselves!
4. What did Master Sergeant Ruiz, who leads the recruits through basic training, have tattooed on his shoulder?

Answer: Willie Wheelie

When the recruits assemble for basic training, Master Sergeant Ruiz finds a reason to hate all of them except John. It turns out that during his career as an adman, John had invented 'Willie Wheelie' and his slogan "Sometimes you just gotta hit the road".
Willie Wheelie was Ruiz's favourite character, and he opened up enough to tell John how he was inspired not to kill himself at a low point in his life, when he saw a billboard of the character and slogan as he waited for a "bus to throw himself under".
5. The recruit's new bodies have a computer built directly into their brains. What are these interfaces called?

Answer: BrainPal

The BrainPals speak to their owners, download any information they need straight into their head, communicate with each other as necessary, and can be speech or thought controlled. They can also be used as entertainment consoles storing music, books, TV shows, and photographs.
6. When the Colonial Defense Forces lose the first Battle of Coral, John Perry is the only survivor from his ship. Which ship was it?

Answer: Modesto

The loss of the planet Coral and its colony is a devastating blow to the Colonial Defense Force. John Perry is the only survivor not just of the Modesto's personnel, but of the entire battle.
His life is only saved by his genetically modified new body and the advanced technology available to the medical team after his rescue.
7. In order to enter into communication with the Consu race, the Humans must pass a test for each question they would like to ask. What is the test?

Answer: Single combat to the death

The Consu agree to allow up to five questions, one for each of the human soldiers who can defeat a Consu warrior in single combat to the death.
In the event, the Humans win four of the five contests.
8. John meets a soldier who is the image of his dead wife; what is her name?

Answer: Jane Sagan

Jane is a member of the mysterious Ghost Brigades. It turns out that her body was made using the DNA from Kathy, John's wife.
All the Ghost Brigade soldiers are given ordinary first names, and surnames of famous scientists, at random, when they are 'awakened' in their laboratory constructed bodies.
9. When John Perry returns to Coral to capture the satellite tracking device from the Rraey, where is it hidden?

Answer: In the infirmary of the original colony buildings

John finds it by accident when he brings a wounded Jane to the infirmary to try and treat her head injury.
He ends up as the hero of the hour by finding the mission target and saving the life of his commanding officer.
10. The Colonial Defence Forces keep Earth under interdict so that none of the alien races realise how important it is as the 'Home of Humanity'. Which planet is the de facto Capital of the Human colonies off Earth?

Answer: Phoenix

Humans living on Earth have almost no idea of what the CDF does out in space. All they know is that recruits are somehow "made young again", then after a ten year term of service, can become colonists themselves. They are never allowed back to Earth, and there is no communication with Earth once they leave.
