Hawk, who also appears to have only one name, moves in and out of Spenser's life, but is his closest male friend. Sometimes he's around, sometimes off playing or working. When he is not working with Spenser, it's best not to make close inquiries into his activities. We never see where Hawk lives, but we do get treated to a succession of expensive and powerful automobiles belonging to him, and we know he spends time crashing with his current, always ephemeral, lady friend.

Bernard J. Fortunato (also referred to here and there as Bernard J. Fortuno)describes himself as "compact", and possibly overcompensates just a bit for this by being bumptious, feisty and cocky. "I can shoot," he asserts, and indeed he can. When Spenser recruits a gaggle of reinforcements for a job in the California desert, Fortunato is the only one who insists on payment up front.

Tedy Sapp has hair bleached white-blonde and arms like tree trunks. He sees to it that nobody trifles with the gays who frequent the Atlanta bar where he works. Tedy has had a monogamous relationship for some years with an ophthalmologist.

Quirk is another laconic, tough character in Spenser's circle. He's always impeccably attired in a suit and tie and a crisp spotless shirt. He's not particularly well-liked by the Boston PD brass, so it takes him a long time to get promoted past the rank of captain.

Susan's it. She's an ex-guidance counselor turned shrink (with a degree from Harvard, no less), and Spenser adores her. They do not live together, but they share custody of a pet - or rather, serial pets - and after each of them strays once, they keep firmly to a monogamous relationship. Susan is a buff, black-haired, stylish knockout who nibbles food in tiny bites and has no talent for home cooking.

Her fridge usually contains a couple of beers - for Spenser - and some spoiled broccoli.

Pearl the Wonder Dog is the couple's "baby". She gets to lick the faces of her owners, is indulged with all manner of human food treats, sleeps on the bed (often insinuating herself between Spenser and his inamorata), and is second to no canine in her ability to track edible garbage in the wilds of Boston parklands. Pearl lives to a ripe old age but eventually meets her end; and after a decent mourning period, another Pearl joins the household, a new Shorthair Pointer with very similar traits to the original.

Rita's a hotshot lawyer and she's clearly warm for Spenser's form. They work together on several cases. Rita first appears as an attorney in the Boston DA's office, but later moves on to much more lucrative pursuits with Cohn, Oaks - a ritzy private Boston firm.
