Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Dalinar
Answer: The Stormfather
Dalinar Kholin, AKA 'The Blackthorn,' was the strong arm of his brother (King Gavilar Kholin) until the king's death, after which Dalinar worked to support his nephew Elhokar as the new king. While fighting a war with the non-human Parshendi, Dalinar began to have visions of the long-ago past and the Orders of the Knights Radiant. Eventually, Dalinar became a Knight Radiant by bonding the Stormfather, himself, a giant spren who controls the highstorms that periodically travel around the globe.
By bonding this powerful spren, Dalinar joined the Order of Bondsmiths, which gave him the ability to access and join together the Cognitive, Spiritual, and Physical Realms. The surges associated with Bondsmiths are Tension and Cohesion.
Since there are only three spren which can bond to create a Bondsmith, the results of their bondings are different for each person.
2. Jasnah
Answer: Ivory
Jasnah Kholin, daughter of King Gavilar, bonded with an Inkspren by the name of Ivory.
Inkspren tend to bond people who are logical and deliberate in their thinking (rather than spontaneous). Those bonded to Inkspren are of the Knight Radiant Order of Elsecallers, granted connection to the surges of Transformation and Transportation. They are able to change the very nature of something completely (like turning a person into a stone statue), and also to travel through the Cognitive Realm to appear elsewhere in the Physical Realm.
3. Kaladin
Answer: Sylphrena
Kaladin Stormblessed is a former slave, part of "Bridge Four," and later Captain of Dalinar Kholin's Cobalt Guard, who bonded an Honorspren named Sylphrena (or Syl for short).
By bonding Syl, Kaladin became a Windrunner (another Knight Radiant Order) with access to the surges of Adhesion and Gravitation. This gives Kaladin the power to fly and to make things stick together. Both of these are accomplished by 'lashing' things (to each other, or in a direction).
4. Lift
Answer: Wyndle
Lift is a young girl of the streets who made a bond with a Cultivationspren named Wyndle.
With their bond, Lift joins the Radiant Order of Edgedancers, with access to the surges of Abrasion and Progression. This gives Lift the ability to reduce her friction to be able to slide on surfaces, and to also cause things to grow very rapidly.
5. Lopen
Answer: Rua
(The) Lopen was part of Bridge Four and became a Squire within the Order of Windrunners after Kaladin became a Windrunner Knight Radiant. Eventually, Lopen bonded his own Honorspren named Rua.
Another benefit of being a Knight Radiant is the ability to heal (with stormlight). After becoming a Squire, Lopen's missing arm regrew.
6. Navani
Answer: The Sibling
Navani Kholin is the former queen, married to Gavilar Kholin until his untimely death. She later married Dalinar in a ceremony conducted by the Stormfather, himself.
Navani convinces one of the other two spren capable of making a Bondsmith, in this case known as 'The Sibling.' This powerful spren provides power to the city fortress of the Radiants (called Urithiru) with the bond to Navani.
7. Renarin
Answer: Glys
Renarin Kholin is the younger son of Dalinar Kholin, and cousin to Jasnah. He bonded a Mistspren by the name of Glys.
By bonding a Mistspren, a person gains access to the surges of Illumination and Progression, and becomes a member of the Knight Radiant Order of Truthwatchers. Their powers include the ability to heal others and to make illusions.
In Renarin's case, however, his spren was corrupted by one of the Unmade (Sja-anat), and consequently, his power is somewhat altered. He can still heal, but instead of being able to create illusions, Renarin can see visions of past and future events.
8. Rlain
Answer: Tumi
Rlain, formerly known as Shen, is a Listener (a non-human species native to Roshar) who was a spy in the war between humans and the Listeners (Parshendi). Rlain defected to the humans' cause and eventually made a bond with a Mistspren named Tumi, becoming a Truthwatcher.
9. Shallan
Answer: Pattern
Shallan Davar, a young (light-eyed) noble from Jah Keved who married Adolin Kholin (the elder son of Dalinar Kholin, and brother to Renarin). As a young girl, Shallan bonded a Cryptic named Testament, but she abandoned that bond and her first spren became a 'deadeye.' She later bonded a new Cryptic named Pattern.
Bonding a Cryptic grants one access to the surges of Illusion and Transformation and they can become Knight Radiants of the Lightweaver Order. Shallan has the power to create illusions and to transform matter in a similar way to Jasnah.
10. Teft
Answer: Phendorana
Like Lopen, Teft was a member of Bridge Four with Kaladin (and many others) who first became a Squire within the Windrunner Order. Eventually, Teft bonded his own Honorspren named Phendorana.
11. Venli
Answer: Timbre
Like Rlain, Venli is one of the Listeners. Venli made a bond with a Reacher (also known as a lightspren).
Bonding a Reacher gives access to the surges of Transportation and Cohesion, which make them part of the Knight Radiant Order of Willshapers. These surges grant the power of access to the Cognitive Realm (like Jasnah) and the ability to physically change matter (like shaping stone).
12. Wit
Answer: Design
Presented as the King's Wit in the series, it is soon revealed that Wit is also known as Hoid, who is a powerful, ancient being that has appeared in every different book series in Brandon Sanderson's Cosmere. He always involves himself in the story, and is always looking to access the powers made available by the different Shards on the different Cosmere planets.
On Roshar, that means that Wit/Hoid is trying to bond a spren. He eventually does bond a Cryptic named Design.
