Sam is posing as the town's new school teacher. During his non-teaching time he is tracking down the outlaw gang that is responsible for several raids on wagons and trains, resulting in robberies and murders. He soon discovers that trying to teach the town's and nearby ranchers' children is interesting and difficult.

Terran Chancelor was responsible for planning and instigating the dangling of their former school teacher, Thomas Singleton, into the well. Upon arrival in town, Sam discovered Singleton was tied with baling twine, dangling head first into the well. To teach Terran and his accomplices a lesson, Sam dangles Terran into the well.

After Sam pulls him up he forces Terran to apologize to his former teacher.

Mungo is in jail because he murdered his son, Garrett. Described as a man that was "mean jealous", Mungo came home to discover his son having an affair with his wife, Undine. After killing his son, he takes the body into town and confesses for several to see and hear. Sam soon takes control of the situation and deputizes a local man to watch over Mungo in prison. Undine later says that Mungo is innocent because Garrett had forced himself on her and Mungo arrived just in time to save her.

Ben is Mungo's twelve year-old son. He was at the ranch when his father shot his brother. The gunfire scared him and he hid. He was hiding Anna's cabin, behind the cook stove. Sam suggested that Maddie check there first. After Maddie finds Ben she reassures him that he can go and live with her and Terran. Later Sam explained that as a child his mother got shot and she had told him to hide behind the stove because stoves deflect bullets.

Answer: She was his fiancee

Maddie was Warren's fiancee. He was the local sheriff, but was shot and killed, leaving the town without any form of law. Maddie was with him when he was shot. She believes that Rex, the meanest one of Mungo's boys was the man responsible for shooting Warren.

Mungo owns almost all of Haven, except for the saloon, the Rattlesnake, owned by Oralee Pringle. She claims that Sam does not look nor behave like a school teacher, but instead acts more like a lawman or a gunslinger. After Mungo turns himself in, and Sam takes control of the situation, Oralee is more convinced that he is not a teacher. Out of all of the townspeople, even after seeing his take charge attitude and the gun he carries Oralee is the only one that guessed that Sam is not who he claims to be.

Mungo had four sons, at the end of the book only Ben, the youngest son, is alive. Garrett was Mungo's oldest son; he died from his father's bullet. Both Landry and Rex were killed by Thomas.

The leader of the outlaw gang is Thomas Singleton. Haven's former school teacher was responsible for several months of robberies and several murders. Rex and Landry were members of the outlaw gang until Thomas killed them. Another member of his gang is his half-sister Undine. She was the only member of the gang left to be held responsible.

Answer: She died saving Ben from the river

After Sam's mother died, Major SP Blackstone took him in and raised him. Abigail was his daughter and she followed Sam to Haven. Seeing Ben trying to cross a log at the river and fall in Abigail jumped in and saved him. She managed to get him out of the river, but lost her footing, Ben was able to grab her and pull her out. Sam said that she always had a weak heart and that it must have just given out. Abigail died after she saved Ben.

Afterwards Ben apologies to her father, and he told him it wasn't his fault and offers Ben the chance to come live in his home.

After the gang is caught and dealt with Sam marries Maddie. He decides that he no longer wants to be a ranger. Instead he wants to return to his ranch in Stone Creek with Maddie and Terran and concentrate on ranching.
