Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who narrates the story/ is the main character?

Answer: Rukmani

Rukmani can be described as a worry wart and as a typical Indian woman. She is married to a man named Nathan and has seven children, but at the end she only keeps in touch with two of them.
2. The names of all Rukmani and Nathan's seven children in order from oldest to youngest are?

Answer: Ira, Arjun, Thambi, Murugan, Raja, Selvam, Kuti

Ira, the only daughter, becomes a prostitue to get money to feed Kuti, who ends up dying at a young age anyway. Arjun and Thambi move away to work somewhere else to get money. Murugan goes missing out of nowhere. Raja dies of weakness while stealing. Selvam becomes a doctor.
3. Who dies at the end of the story?

Answer: Nathan

Rukmani is heartbroken, but she adopts a child named Puli. So she, Puli, Selvam, and Ira end up living together back on their farm.
4. Which is not a major change in India in the novel?

Answer: The Festival of Lights, or Deepvali.

Bad harvest makes even the richest people of India starve; according to Rukmani, she never had starved before, even though she was poor. The tannery forces people to fight for food and jobs. Kenny and Selvam made a hospital, which at that time, there were no well known ones in India. Festival of Lights, however, is not a change in India. It is a well known holiday there.
5. Who else did Nathan have children with?

Answer: Kunthi

Nathan tells Rukmani this after Kunthi steals two weeks of food from their house. However, Rukmani is so hungry she does not even care that her husband cheated. She just forgets it and worries about food and her family, as she does throughout the majority of the book.
6. What is true about Sacrabani, Ira's child?

Answer: He is an Indian albino.

He was born in an encounter, the kids make fun of him for being albino, and he was born in his grandmother's (Rukmani's) house.
7. Which does not characterize Selvam?

Answer: good at farming

Selvam is very odd compared to his brothers. He dislikes farming because he is not good at it like they are, and he is much closer to his sister, Ira then the rest of them are (probably because he is a lot younger). But he should be respected because of his overall kindness to others.
8. Does Nathan ever leave his farm? If so, why?

Answer: Yes, because he didn't have enough money to stay there.

Afterwards, he and Rukmani travel a hundred miles to find their son, Murugan. They find out that he ran away two years before, and they end up broke for a while, and Nathan eventually dies there from sickness. Rukmani goes back to the farm because Selvam had enough money to take some land back and help her, Ira, and Sacrabani.
9. Who are least likely to worry or show their worry about anything?

Answer: Nathan and Ira

Nathan never worries about anything, or actually he does but never shows it. Ira is her father's daughter (is pretty much the same way).
Arjun, Thambi, and Rukmani analyze everything, and Rukmani worries like crazy. Selvam's in between, and Raja isn't talked about in the story enough for anyone to know.
10. What happens at the very end?

Answer: Rukmani lives with Puli, Ira, Selvam, and Sacrabani

The basic mood of the end of the story is mixed with sorrow and indifference.
