Cunegonde, after witnessing a love scene between Pangloss (her tutor) and Pacquette (her mother's servant), drops her handkerchief nearby Candide and entices him to kiss her. Her father is very angry, going as far as to banish Candide from the castle, forever.
2. Candide is banished from the Baron's castle.

After the unexpected kiss with Cunegonde, the Baron banished Candide from the castle. Candide is caught by Bulgarians who flog him and almost kill him, before they decide to have him be a soldier in their army. Candide manages to escape.
3. Candide meets Professor Pangloss again.

After his escape from the service of the Bulgarians, Candide flees to Holland where an anti-baptist named Jacques helps him. Candide by chance comes across disease-stricken Professor Pangloss, his optimistic former tutor, who received the illness through sexual intercourse with the maid Pacquette. Jacques helps the philosopher recover, only losing an eye and an ear.
4. Candide is flogged and Pangloss is hung.

During one of Pangloss's lectures on optimism and unusual philosophy, he and Candide are arrested on the charge of heresy. Candide is flogged to the point of near death, and Pangloss is hung. Cunegonde, unbeknownst to anyone, is watching the scene and sends her servant, the old woman, to help Candide.
5. Candide is reunited with Miss Cunegonde.

The old woman, being sent to help Candide after his flogging, brings him to Cunegonde's lodgings. After an emotional reunion, they lay on the couch together when one of Cunegonde's two masters, Don Isaachar, comes and gets angry. Candide kills him and then kills the Grand Inquisitor, who comes in next and is actually the one who had Candide flogged. Candide, Cunegonde, and the old woman escape. Candide has to part with the two ladies and go abroad with his valet Cocambo.
6. Candide reunites with Cunegonde's brother and ends up stabbing him.

After escaping justice in regard two murders he committed, Candide is introduced to a Jesuit who is none other than Cunegonde's brother! The two men are happy, extremely happy to be reunited, but after Candide confesses that he loves Cunegonde and plans to marry her, the unnamed brother gets violent. Candide has to stab him in self-defense. Cocambo, having been in many scrapes before, tells his master to put on the Jesuit cloak and escape before anyone comes. Unbeknownst to either, the brother is still alive.
7. Candide meets Pacquette.

After a series of adventures with Cocambo, Candide finds Pacquette, the Baroness's former maid. She is now a miserable prostitute who goes around with a friar, equally miserable. The kind-hearted Candide gives them both plenty of money.
8. Candide finds that Pangloss and Cunegonde's brother are still alive.

Cunegonde's brother and Pangloss are working as slaves. Candide is shocked to see that Pangloss survived being hung and the brother survived Candide's stabbing. Candide paid for both of their releases.
9. Candide marries Cunegonde, even though he doesn't love her anymore.

Cunegonde is now a dishwasher and has grown horribly ugly. Disgusted, Candide wishes to have nothing to do with her anymore. Before Candide could express himself, her brother flew into a rage, saying he'd rather die than see her marry Candide. Candide is riled up and decides to marry Cunegonde just to spite her brother.

The brother ends up being sold back into slavery. The rest of the protagonists (who are Candide, Pangloss, Cocambo, Cunegonde, the old woman, Pacquette, and her friar) go set up a farm.

10. Candide says "we must cultivate our garden".

Pangloss was giving another lecture on optimism, when Candide dismisses him, afterwards saying that they must "cultivate their garden".
