Raymond says that he was going down to spend Whitsuntide with a man whom he had met fairly recently.
2. Where does the story take place?

Answer: Polperran

As fas as I know Polperran does not really exist. There is, however, a place called Polperro situated in Cornwall.
3. Who was Raymond's travelling companion on the train?

Answer: Inspector Badgworth

Raymond recalls that he recognised the man but couldn't remember where from. It turned out that he had written about a missing person and had met Inspector Badgworth in the process of doing so.
4. What was the pub at Polperran called?

Answer: Three Anchors

The pub was called the Three Anchors and Raymond is taken for a drink there to meet some local characters by his host Newman.
5. On what day did Raymond see the gardener digging in the garden?

Answer: Monday

At first he thought that he was digging a grave but then realised that he must have been digging a ditch in preparation for the planting of roses.
