Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In "So You Want to Be a Wizard", which of the following quotes was NOT voiced by Kit?

Answer: "You're the one they were calling crazy last week."

A couple of eighth graders had come upon Kit when he was experimenting with his new wizarding skills. In the above quote, Nita is referencing their response to Kit's actions. Non-wizards are rather blind when it comes to magical practices.
2. In "So You Want to Be a Wizard", what is Fred's real name?

Answer: Khairelikoblepharehglukumeilichephreidosd'enagouni

This exceedingly long name is accompanied by a series of colors that apparently are its visual counterpart.
Instead of attempting either of these translations, Kit wisely suggests that they shorten it to Fred (from "phreid").
3. In "So You Want to Be a Wizard", which of the following items did Fred, the white hole, NOT expel?

Answer: a Sony camera

Fred has been emitting all sorts of strange things since he arrived on earth. Worse, he has accidentally swallowed Nita's prized space pen. But later on his new talent actually comes in handy for creating diversions.
4. In "Deep Wizardry", which part of the Song of the Twelve does Nita sing?

Answer: The Silent Lord

Unfortunately, she does not realize when she signs up for this task that the Silent Lord gets eaten by the end of the Song! Still, aware of the horrific impact her resignation would have upon the earth, she decides to go through with the task. Very luckily, Ed the shark ends up completing her role.
5. In "Deep Wizardry", what kind of whale is Areinnye?

Answer: A sperm whale

Crazed by the recent death of her calf by human, Areinnye loathes Kit and Nita. She eventually betrays the Singers and nearly wrecks the Song. She is killed by the sharks Ed calls to his aid.
6. In "Deep Wizardry", what excuse do Nita and Kit offer Nita's parents for their constant absences?

Answer: "We were swimming"

Obviously, this excuse wears a little thin when Kit and Nita return home in the middle of the night. It definitely doesn't explain to Nita's sister Dairine how it is that they transformed themselves into whales! Finally they are forced to 'fess up to their wizardry.
7. In "High Wizardry", in what part of the Planetarium is Dairine when she transports herself to Mars?

Answer: In the restroom

Dairine had been messing around with her family's new computer, and gotten herself kicked out of the house for the day. She then went with Kit and Nita to the planetarium, only to use the opportunity to ditch to Mars and begin her wizarding Ordeal.
8. In "High Wizardry", what snack does Dairine transport from her refrigerator to her location on a faraway planet?

Answer: A loaf of bread, bologna, and mustard

When she confiscated these foods from the distant refrigerator, she also forgot to grab a knife. Realizing her mistake, Dairine tried to snitch the knife from her silverware drawer at home, but was informed by her computer that this was an "illegal function call". She was thus forced to spread her mustard with her fingers.
9. In "High Wizardry", what is the first word that Gigo, one of the robots that Dairine created, speaks?

Answer: "With"

Gigo is a very affectionate little robot who is thrilled when Dairine gives him his name. His name is an acronym for "garbage in, garbage out", referencing his habit of repeating the words he hears. Gigo takes Dairine's side in the ensuing argument with the robot Logo, who is channeling the voice of the Lone Power.
10. In "A Wizard Abroad", which aspect of Irish geography does Nita find useful for spell-casting?

Answer: That nearly every field, river, and hill has a name

To cast a spell, a wizard must correctly describe whatever it is he or she wishes to change. Since most of the geographical features of Ireland already had names, Nita's spell-casting became simpler.
11. In "A Wizard Abroad", what alcoholic drink does Nita accidentally swallow?

Answer: Guinness

Nita is infuriated by a comment the irritable Ronan has made. In order to quell her temper, she hastily begins to gulp down her drink. Only problem is, she's grabbed the wrong cup!
12. In "A Wizard Abroad", what is the human name of the smith who is really one of the Powers That Be?

Answer: Biddy

At first Biddy attempts to hide her identity. But then Nita catches her halting a lightning bolt with her outstretched hand. Biddy forges that spear that Ronan is destined to carry.
13. In "A Wizard's Dilemma", what type of animal is Pralaya most like?

Answer: An otter

Pralaya helps Nita to learn how to find the "kernels" of universes, in the hopes that she will use this information to save her mom's life. Unbeknownst to either of them, the helpful Pralaya is being "overshadowed" by the Lone Power. Eventually the Lone Power kills him.
14. In "A Wizard's Dilemma", what does Nita's mom appear wearing during her fierce battle with the Lone One?

Answer: A t-shirt and denim skirt

In spite of her unimposing appearance, Nita's mom actually inflicts quite a bit of discomfort on the Lone Power. Still, in the end she chooses death over an incessant struggle for life.
15. In "A Wizard's Dilemma", what is a glede?

Answer: A dragon's eye

"The dragon's eye, something brand new, something you've never touched, something born after the change happened to you, the chance to be otherwise, something you can't affect..." This is Kit's description of the glede, which he and Nita use to battle the Lone Power.
16. In the first chapter of "A Wizard Alone", two appliances are giving Kit some serious grief. What are they?

Answer: The remote and the DVD player

The DVD and the remote are refusing to cooperate with one another because they don't think that they are "related". With a little research, Kit is able to show them that they, in fact, have the same processors. Sadly, this is only the beginning of the problems these uppity appliances present.
17. In "A Wizard Alone", what flavor of soda does Nita like?

Answer: lemon

Kit keeps a supply of lemon sodas on hand for Nita. This is one of the many little gestures he makes as he attempts to console Nita in her time of grieving for the death of her mother.
18. In "A Wizard Alone", which of the following disguises does Darryl NOT use?

Answer: A soldier

Darryl, being autistic, does not at first wish to communicate with Nita directly. He attempts in various ways to make her leave him alone.
19. In "A Wizard Alone", who is Mr. Millman?

Answer: A shrink

Although Mr. Millman is not a wizard, he is apparently acquainted with some of Nita's type. He has been counseling her ever since her mom's death. At the end of "A Wizard Alone", Nita feels she no longer needs this counseling.
20. In "A Wizard's Holiday", what insult did a group of teenagers call Roshaun that he perceived as a compliment?

Answer: Duckhead

After confirming what a 'duck' is, Roshaun, in his typical arrogance, decides that it is a compliment. This strange assumption derives from the fact that ducks can both swim and fly, which he thinks is a comment on his versatility.
21. In "A Wizard's Holiday", Kit's dog Ponch becomes infatuated with a certain type of alien food. What color is this food?

Answer: Blue

Ponch first tastes this blue food at the Crossings. Later, Quelt's mother serves it frequently to her guests, much to Ponch's delight.
22. In "A Wizard's Holiday", who is Tapi?

Answer: Quelt's dad

"Tapi" and "pabi" are Alaaluan terms for "father" and "mother". "Ceiff" are sheep-like creatures, and "keks" are crab-like beasts, to name a few other Alaaluan terms.
23. In "Wizards At War", what does Darryl's version of the Wizard's "Manual" look like?

Answer: An MP3 player

As Darryl remarks, "It's got all the usual spell-storage and display options, AND it carries my tunes!" Dairine pronounces this "too slick". She, of course, has a sentient computer named Spot as her own Manual.
24. When Nita and Sker'ret are under fire at the Crossings, who saves them?

Answer: Carmela

Carmela is Kit's older sister. She is not a wizard but doesn't seem to let this stop her from battling evil galactic forces. At the Crossings, Carmela comes charging in with her hair curler, which happens to have pulse lasers attached.
25. "[Nita] looked up at Kit. 'Is he breathing?' She whispered. Kit looked at her, and very quietly said, 'No.'" In "Wizards at War", which character does this excerpt refer to?

Answer: Ronan

Ronan allowed himself to be killed so that the One's Champion, who resided inside him, could escape and defeat the Lone Power. Fortunately, with the help of another wizard, Nita and Kit are able to save him.
