Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who was the new servant of Mr Fogg, appointed on the beginning day of the journey?

Answer: Jean Passepartout

Phileas Fogg dismissed his previous servant, James Foster, as he had heated his bathing water to eighty-four degrees Fahrenheit rather than the "correct" eighty-six. Passepartout had performed jobs like tight-rope walking and street singing, but he just wanted to settle down. Poor fellow - little did he know that he was to start touring the world that very evening.
2. What important thing (to him) did Mr Fogg's servant forget in his haste?

Answer: To switch off his room's light

On hearing this fact, Mr Fogg remarked that the light will burn at Passepartout's expense. In the final chapter, "In Which We Hear the Conclusion of Mr Fogg's Journey", the author remarks that Mr Fogg divided the one thousand pounds he gained from the wager between Passepartout and Mr Fix, but he deducted the cost of the gas from his share for the sake of regularity.
3. Where did the detective, Mr Fix, first meet Mr Fogg?

Answer: Suez

Mr Fix met Mr Fogg at Suez. Believing that Mr Fogg was the bank thief he was looking for, Mr Fix appealed to the Consulate to help him keep Mr Fogg stuck at Suez, but he was denied. So he sent a telegram for his Arrest Warrant to England and decided to stalk Mr Fogg until then.
4. What kind of animal/s aided Mr Fogg and his companions to travel to Allahabad after they realised that the railway line across India was not finished?

Answer: An elephant

The elephant was named Kiouni. Mr Fogg bought him for two thousand pounds. He loved sugar lumps. He was very useful to them; he brought them to Allahabad and they safely rescued Aouda, the only female character in the story, thanks to his speed.
5. Did Mr Fogg miss the ship from Kolkata?

Answer: No

Passepartout had unknowingly walked into a temple in Bombay while wearing shoes. He got into a fight with the priests, which was an offence on the Indian soil. The Judge wanted to sentence him to jail for fifteen days, and Mr Fogg for eight days. However, Mr Fogg walked out of the Court by paying a bail of a thousand pounds and caught the ship from Kolkata.
6. Why was Passepartout separated from Mr Fogg at Hong Kong?

Answer: Mr Fix drugged him with opium

Mr Fix told Passepartout about his suspicion regarding Mr Fogg and tried to make him help his cause. However, he realised that Passepartout was far too loyal for that and drugged him with opium. This made Passepartout unable to tell Mr Fogg of the early sailing of one boat, and, although he caught it, Mr Fogg and Aouda were left behind.
7. What was the first difficulty faced by Mr Fogg while crossing America by train?

Answer: The bridge at Medicine Bow was not safe for the train to pass over it

The driver took the train one mile away from the bridge on the first whistle. On the second whistle, the train started accelerating; the speed was so immense that the train almost leaped from one end of the river to another. The poor bridge, however, crashed as soon as the train passed through.
8. What vehicle helped Mr Fogg and his companions to reach Chicago after their train was attacked by the Red Indians?

Answer: A sledge

The sledge was like a boat on runners, with a huge mast for sails and a rudder for steering it. It took them to Omaha in time. Passepartout felt happy with Mr Fix for the first time since Hong Kong for suggesting that idea. The author remarked that he would have shaken hands with Mr Fix, if his hands weren't so cold.
9. After being arrested (and released) by Mr Fix, when Mr Fogg reached London, he found that he was "late" by what amount of time?

Answer: Five minutes

As soon as Mr Fogg reached Liverpool, Mr Fix arrested him. He was released when it came to the knowledge that the bank thief was named James Strand and he had already been caught. However, when Mr Fogg reached London, every clock informed him that it was ten minutes to nine - he was late by five minutes!
10. What decision made by Mr Fogg allowed him to know that he had actually won the bet and had travelled round the world in 80 days?

Answer: His decision to marry Auoda

When mr Fogg sent Passepartout to the Marriage Office, it came to his knowledge that his marriage to Aouda was impossible for the next day as it was Sunday. This error of one day was caused as Mr Fogg had crossed the International Date Line eastwards and had gained a whole day. He won the bet and gained a charming wife from this "impossible" quest. A good deal, if you ask me.
