Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Heirs of the Force" :Lowbacca was the newest member at Luke Skywalker's Jedi academy. What parting gift did his uncle, Chewbacca, leave with him?

Answer: A skyhopper ship

Coming from the planet of tall trees, Lowbacca was going to miss the heights and the solitude. Chewbacca left him with a T-23 Skyhopper, which was a bigger version of the T-16 Luke Skywalker had growing up. It came in pieces, so Lowie asked Jaina to help him assemble it.
2. "Heirs of the Force": Jacen Solo kept a menagerie of local animals in his room at the Jedi academy. Which one kept escaping to cause problems?

Answer: Crystal snake

The crystal snake was mostly invisible, with a bite that could knock humans unconscious for a few minutes. The book opened with Jacen's crystal snake missing from its cage. They found it in Raynar Thule's room, under the sleeping boy.

Later, the snake got loose again, and Jacen just noticed while Raynar was taunting him in the canteen. Jacen lunged for the snake, which looked like an attack, and started a food fight.

Lastly, Jacen left a crystal snake in Qorl's TIE Fighter to distract the old Imperial pilot.
3. "Heirs of the Force": The friends found a TIE Fighter pilot, Qorl, hiding in the jungles of Yavin IV. Why was Qorl there?

Answer: He had crashed there 20 years ago

Similar to the movie "Castaway", Qorl had been living in the jungles of Yavin IV for twenty years since the Battle of Yavin (from the first "Star Wars" movie). He crashed his ship on the moon and was told to wait for rescue, but then the Death Star was destroyed and Qorl was forgotten.

He broke his arm, which never set properly. He never once sought out the rebel base, even when it became the Jedi academy, to either attack it or surrender; he remained loyal to the Empire.
4. "Heirs of the Force": Qorl took Jacen and Jaina Solo prisoner, but Lowbacca managed to escape back to the academy. Unfortunately, he lost his translating droid, Em Teedee. How did Lowbacca communicate with the other Jedi?

Answer: He called his uncle and Han Solo

Han and Chewie were in the system helping Lando Calrissian set up his new mining project in orbit around the gas giant. Lowbacca called them from the academy's communications room to use Han as a translator.
5. "Heirs of the Force": Qorl wanted to use his TIE Fighter to destroy the Jedi academy, but he was chased off by Han Solo in the Millennium Falcon. How was Qorl able to escape?

Answer: He jumped to hyperspace

At the beginning of the novel Han Solo brought presents for both his children at the academy. He brought Jaina an old hyperdrive unit for her to tinker with and fix.

Jaina was envious of Lowbacca's Skyhopper, so when they found the crashed TIE Fighter in the jungle, they decided to repair it. On a whim, Jaina decided to go above and beyond by installing her hyperdrive on the small craft. TIE Fighters did not usually have hyperdrives, instead relying on larger ships to ferry them around.

When Han was about to shoot down Qorl at the end of the novel, he was flabbergasted when the small ship unexpectedly jumped away.
6. "Shadow Academy": Jacen, Jaina, and Lowbacca visited Lando's corusca gem mining operation around the gas giant of Yavin. Who managed to find a gem in the planet's atmosphere?

Answer: Jacen Solo

Corusca gems were like diamonds made in the crushing pressure of the gas giant Yavin. The crystals were incredibly durable, and could be used for cutting instruments or as jewelry. Lowbacca and Jaina both failed to find one in the strong winds of Yavin, and Jacen was at the end of his time when he was able to lock onto a gem with the Force.

It turned out to be one of the biggest Lando had ever seen, but as he promised, he let Jacen keep it. Jacen decided he would give it to his mother as a gift.
7. "Shadow Academy": Tamith Kai kidnapped the Jedi students while they were on GemDiver Station. What group did she belong to?

Answer: The Nightsisters of Dathomir

The Nightsisters were the Force users from Dathomir who used the Dark Side of the Force. Tenel Ka, as a Dathomiri warrior, was not a fan of these women. When she and Luke tracked down the kidnappers, they ended up on Dathomir where they disguised themselves as new recruits for the Shadow Academy.
8. "Shadow Academy": What lead did Luke Skywalker have when searching for the missing students?

Answer: Tamith Kai had used a corusca gem drill to cut into GemDiver Station

GemDiver Station was covered in quantum armour to withstand the impacts of micro gems liable to hit the station. The only thing strong enough to cut through it was a corusca gem drill, and Lando was the only supplier of corusca gems, and he had only sent two shipments since getting his operation up. Luke and Tenel Ka traveled to Borgo Prime to find the middleman who described the buyer as a Nightsister.
9. "Shadow Academy": At the Shadow Academy, Jacen and Jaina were duped into dueling each other when each was put in a holographic disguise of whom?

Answer: Darth Vader, their grandfather

At the start of the novel, Jacen was practicing with his uncle's lightsaber while waiting in his office. Luke took back the lightsaber and explained that Jacen wasn't ready for one, despite his eagerness. On the Shadow Academy, Jacen and Jaina were given lightsabers, and set against holographic monsters.

Then for one training exercise they were given holo-disguises and set against each other. Neither knew what their own disguise was, or who was in the other; all they saw was Darth Vader, the most notorious villain.

The fight ended when the disguises were dropped, and they were horrified at how close they'd come to killing each other.
10. "Shadow Academy": Jaina, Jacen, and Lowbacca managed to escape from their rooms at the Shadow Academy just as Luke Skywalker and Tenel Ka showed up on a spaceship. The docking bay doors were closed on them, blocking their escape. How were they opened?

Answer: Qorl, the TIE Fighter pilot, opened them

Qorl was loyal to the Empire. When he returned, his damaged arm was replaced with a new droid arm (instead of healing the organic one). He wanted to remain loyal, but he didn't agree with Brakiss' lethal teaching methods at the Shadow Academy, and no one listened to him.

When Jacen and Jaina were trying to escape, Qorl secretly opened the bay doors for them, partially as repayment for them fixing his ship and helping him escape Yavin IV. Brakiss and Tamith Kai never found out what he'd done.
11. "The Lost Ones": The Jedi students traveled to Coruscant in this book to visit Princess Leia and Han Solo. Who were the Lost Ones?

Answer: A youth street gang

The Lost Ones were a gang of youths in Coruscant's lower levels run by Norys. Their symbol was a triangle with a targeting reticle in the middle. They wanted Zekk to join the gang, but he was too much of a free spirit, so instead they just harassed him.
12. "The Lost Ones": The Jedi met up with their friend Zekk, who took them on an adventure to recover what precious item?

Answer: A hawkbat egg

Hawkbats were vicious territorial creatures on Coruscant. Zekk found a nest and wanted to get the prized eggs, but needed Jedi help. When retrieving an egg, the mother returned and attacked. Jacen's affinity for animals helped calm the mother, and let them take one egg (Zekk was upset they weren't getting more).

The egg was used as a valuable gift for Leia's important diplomatic meetings.
13. "The Lost Ones": Zekk lived with Old Peckhum, the man who ran supplies out to the Jedi academy on Yavin IV. What did Peckhum do when not running supplies?

Answer: Operated a mirror station

Coruscant, as a giant city, controlled its weather aggressively, which included the use of orbital mirrors to provide heat and light as needed. The mirrors were old, and the entertainment system on Peckhum's assigned station was inoperable, so his three-day shifts were particularly boring.

A side plot of this novel was acquiring, fixing, and installing a new central multitasking unit to make the place more livable.
14. "The Lost Ones": What faux-pas did Zekk make when he was invited to a fancy diplomatic dinner?

Answer: He thought the centrepiece was a salad

Zekk was a kid from the streets who was used to eating ancient military rations. He was not used to the upper class lifestyle of his friends and their mother, but agreed to attend an important banquet. He showed up in what he thought was a rather fine suit, only to be told by C-3PO that it was decades out of style.

Zekk sat through the dinner in an awkward silence. To make sure he didn't come off as completely inept, he decided to say the most innocuous thing he could think of: to comment on the salad. Except when he did, the conversation stopped and all eyes turned to him. He'd mistook the floral centerpiece for a dish. Leia covered for him by eating the centerpiece in front of her, and kicked Han under the table to get him to do the same.
15. "The Lost Ones": Zekk was pretty upset after the dinner for not being rich, educated, or a Jedi like his friends. Did Zekk have Force potential?

Answer: Yes

Tamith Kai and her two lackeys found Zekk in the lower levels of Coruscant and kidnapped him. At the Shadow Academy, Brakiss tested Zekk and found he had Force potential. Zekk hadn't just been "lucky" when scavenging for a living, he'd had the Force. But his friends, who were Jedi, hadn't even thought to check.

It was easy for Brakiss to seduce Zekk to the Dark Side. Zekk would become Brakiss' strongest student at the Shadow Academy.
