Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The main character of the film is Lady Sarah Ashley. At the beginning of the film Sarah travels to Australia to bring her husband, who owns a large ranch, back home to England. What is the first name of Sarah's husband?

Answer: Maitland

Lord Maitland Ashley owns a large ranch in Australia. His wife, Sarah (Nicole Kidman), comes to Australia to find him dead, presumably by King George's (David Gulpilil) hand, the leader of an Aboriginal tribe. We later find out that King George is innocent.
2. Who fires Neil Fletcher?

Answer: Sarah

Sarah Ashley does not want the job of running a ranch, but the determined woman takes on the job. Neil Fletcher (David Wenham) is one of the main villains in the film. He fathered a child with Daisy, one of the local women, but he despises the boy. When Sarah witnesses Fletcher abusing his son, Nullah, she fires him. Fletcher had been cheating the Ashleys by working with the biggest rancher in the area, King Carney.

After he is fired, Fletcher just works with the Carneys and courts Carney's daughter.
3. Why did Drover's young wife die?

Answer: She was ill but the local hospital would not treat her.

Drover (Hugh Jackman) reveals to Sarah that he was married once, but when he came back from the war he found his wife had tuberculosis. The local hospital would not take her in because she was Aboriginal. We later find out that his wife was the sister of his best friend, Magarri (David Ngoombujarra).
4. Whose appearance at the charity ball prompts Sarah not to sell Faraway Downs?

Answer: Drover's

Sarah asks Drover to come to the charity ball with her and to run her ranch. He tells her that he cannot run a ranch; he is a cattle drover who needs to be on the go. Disappointed, Sarah almost agrees to sell cattle monopoly leader, King Carney (Bryan Brown), Faraway Downs. Suddenly Drover appears at the ball, clean shaven and dressed up, and Sarah tells Carney to forget about buying her ranch.
5. Which song from "The Wizard of Oz" becomes Nullah's favorite?

Answer: Over the Rainbow

The famous song, performed in the 1939 classic by Judy Garland, is a recurring song in "Australia". Nullah (Brandon Walters) likes the theme of the song, after he hears it sung (somewhat) by Sarah. Nullah continues to play it on the harmonica and is finally able to see the film on the big screen while Sarah is at the charity ball.
6. Drover does not allow Sarah to ride on the cattle drive.

Answer: False

Drover is skeptical when Sarah announces that she would be riding, but she eventually proves her worth and learns from Drover during the drive. Drover needs her, especially after the death of Nullah's mother.
7. What country attacks Australia in the second half of the film?

Answer: Japan

World War II is on, and northern Australia is attacked by the Japanese in 1942. According to the film, the mission island that Nullah is on is the first to be attacked, and the boys on the island are presumed dead. However, Drover and his best friend make a daring rescue of the children and bring them all home.
8. At the very beginning of the film, what animal is killed and then placed on the top of Drover's truck, much to Sarah's horror?

Answer: Kangaroo

While Sarah is being driven to Faraway Downs by Drover, she is captivated by dozens of jumping kangaroos outside the window. Unfortunately for Sarah and the kangaroo, the animal is shot and swung onto the roof of the truck by one of Drover's men.
9. Which of these characters does not die throughout the run of the film?

Answer: Nullah

Lord Ashley, Sarah's husband, dies at the beginning of the film when he is stabbed. Daisy, Nullah's mother, dies soon after by drowning in a water tower. Fletcher is killed at the very end, by King George. Nullah is presumed dead, when the island he is on is bombed by the Japanese. However, Drover finds Nullah and the other boys alive on the island.
10. At the end of the film, Sarah remains on Faraway Downs with both Drover and Nullah.

Answer: False

When Drover is away on his drive, the Japanese attack Australia, beginning with the island that Nullah's mission is on. When Drover returns home, he believes that Sarah is dead. Heartbroken, he is determined to bring Nullah back. There is a happy ending with the reunion of Sarah and Drover, and Nullah.

However, at the end of the film, Sarah realizes that Nullah belongs with his grandfather, and lets him go.
