Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In James Cameron's first 2013 "Avatar" film, the humans came to Pandora to mine a rare ore called Unobtanium. What is the reason the humans come back to Pandora a second time 16 years later?

Answer: The Earth is dying.

Humans returned because the Earth is dying, and they want to colonize Pandora to ensure their survival. After most of the humans were sent packing at the conclusion of the first "Avatar" film, there was a 16-year peace before the timeline of the second film. During the interlude, Jake Sully and his wife Neytiri conceived three children: Neteyam, Lo'ak, and Tuktirey. The couple also adopts a miraculous child, Kiri who was born from Grace's avatar despite the scientist already being dead. Kiri has a special bond with her deceased mother who she communicates with through the Spirit Trees of Pandora. All the Na'vi are able to communicate with their ancestors in this way, but Kiri's ability is powerful.

Interesting fact: "Avatar: The Way of Water" is over three hours long, clocking in at 192 minutes!
2. In "The Way of Water", who quickly becomes a major antagonist to Jake Sully?

Answer: A Na'vi avatar of Colonel Quaritch

At the climax of the original "Avatar" film, Jake and Colonel Quaritch have a fight to the death which Jake barely survives. Quaritch dies, but his DNA had previously been harvested in case it was needed later. When the humans come back to Pandora, Jake and the Omatikaya clan do everything they can to cause problems for the invaders. To combat the Omatikaya, the humans grow Avatars using the DNA from the Colonel and several of his top men.

Interesting fact: The exact figure has not been made public, but it is estimated that between $300 to $450 million was spent to make "Avatar: The Way of Water". By comparison, the first Avatar film cost $237 million to make.
3. What does Jake Sully decide would be the best way to protect the Omatikaya clan from the human military threat in the film "The Way of Water"?

Answer: If he and his personal family leave the Omatikaya clan.

Jake comes to the conclusion that the humans are only after him and not the rest of the Omatikaya clan. So he convinces his wife Neytiri to take their small personal family into hiding. Jake believes that with him gone, the humans will leave the rest of the clan alone. Based on the human's behavior to this point in the two movies, the safety of the Omatikaya seems unlikely, even with Jake gone, but it does set the stage for the rest of the epic film. The viewer is left to believe the strategy worked.

Interesting fact: Despite a huge amount of CGI animation going into this film, every scene is actually acted out by the film actors including all the incredible water scenes.
4. Who is the human boy Spider who plays a big role in "The Way of Water"?

Answer: The son of Colonel Quaritch

About a year before his showdown with Jake Sully, Colonel Quaritch had a son born to him. When the humans were forced to leave Pandora, the film tells us they had no way of safely putting Miles "Spider" Quaritch into cryosleep for a voyage back to Earth. So, he grew up with the few human scientists that remained on Pandora and soon became a close friend to the Sully Na'vi children. Due to the Pandora air being unsafe for humans, Spider has to use a special breathing mask throughout the film.

Interesting fact: To provide the most lifelike experience, James Cameron had a 250,000 gallon tank built in order to film all of the water scenes. No corner cutting here!
5. Which is NOT a problem the Sully children have adapting to reef life?

Answer: Trouble eating the food

The Sully children have no problem enjoying the food of the Metkayina as they already love seafood. The children do have problems making friends as they look very different from the water-adapted bodies of the Metkayina. On top of that, since Jake Sully started out as a human, his children ended up with a genetic mutation where they have four fingers, instead of three like a normal Na'vi. The Metkayina have spent their lives swimming and have the advantage of being better built for the task. So when the Sully kids arrive, they do indeed have a very hard time learning how to swim and keep up with the Metkayina children.

Interesting fact: Over 200,000 hours of total dive time was spent to bring "Avatar, The Way of Water" to its brilliant completion!
6. Sully's son Lo'ak is tricked into a dangerous part of the reef where he finds himself fighting for his life. Who saves Lo'ak from certain death?

Answer: Payakan, a whale creature

Tulkun are peaceful, whale-like creatures, Pandora style of course, who are considerably more intelligent than humans. Payakan is a Tulkun who has been outcast from his pod for being considered violent. Lo'ak is tricked into going to a dangerous part of the reef where a shark-like creature tries to kill him. Fortunately, Payakan is in the area and was able to scare off the creature. After saving his life, Payakan becomes close friends with Lo'ak, and we learn that the Tulkun actually was wrongly accused. Convincing the rest of the Metkayina that Payakan is peaceful proves near impossible, and the relationship causes more challenges for Lo'ak's integration into the clan.

Interesting fact: Since many of the scenes were filmed underwater for an extended period of time, Cameron hired an expert to teach the actors how to hold their breath for a long time. Kate Winslet was able to hold her breath for the longest for over a staggering seven minutes!
7. Which of the Sully family seems to have the easiest time adjusting to reef life?

Answer: Kiri

Grace's daughter Kiri is definitely different from the rest of the Na'vi making her quite endearing. She is far more in tune with nature than the rest of the Na'vi, which is really saying something! As the four siblings learn to swim and adapt to their new environment, Kiri quickly gains mastery of the water, even gaining some grudging respect from the Metkayina. Additionally, Kiri has an extra strong connection to the Spirit Tree due to her mother's presence. Her first experience with the Spirit Tree of the Metkayina is actually so powerful it causes her to have an epileptic seizure and fall into a coma. Jake is worried to the point where he calls for his science friends to help revive Kiri, but unfortunately, this also allows Colonel Quaritch and his men to locate where the family is hiding.

Interesting fact: Most three-dimensional films are first filmed in two dimensions and then use software to render them in 3D. "The Way of Water", on the other hand, was actually filmed in 3D from the start allowing for a more realistic experience.
8. How is Jake Sully threatened into surrendering once his human enemy finds him?

Answer: Jake's children are being held as hostages.

Like Moby Dick, the Tulkun have poachers who want to kill them for a precious oil found in the whale's brain. Since Payakan is an outcast, Lo'ak is the only one who can warn the whale of the imminent danger from the poachers. Lo'ak's siblings won't let him go alone... so they all go to warn Payakan together. As they try to warn Payakan, Colonel Quaritch and his men show up with the whaling vessel. Three of the Sully kids and the Metkayina chieftain's son are captured. Colonel Quaritch offers to let the kids go in exchange for Sully, who soon allows himself to be made a prisoner.

Interesting information: James Cameron wanted all four of the "Avatar" sequels to be written entirely BEFORE he even started filming "The Way of Water". It took five writers eight months to complete the whole story.
9. Who launches the first surprise attack against the human military in "The Way of Water"?

Answer: Payakan

Jake sees no other choice but to turn himself in to save his children's lives. He is slowly making his way to Quaritch's ship when suddenly Payakan breaches the water and lands on the ship causing chaos and massive damage. Jake then opts for the more exciting plan B where the Na'vi joins the outcast Tulkun in fighting the foreign invaders. A memorable epic battle ensues that is hard to forget. All I know is if I am ever in a sea battle on Pandora, I would want Payakan on my side!

Interesting fact: "The Way of Water", like the first movie, used 48 frames per second compared to most movies that use 24 fps. The film also averaged about 500 iterations per shot to get the perfect image for every frame. What this ended up meaning is it took about 8,000 hours of computer rendering for ONE frame, or 384,000 hours per second of the film... or over 4.4 billion hours to computer render the whole film. Cameron actually paid Google to set up a special cloud just for the task.
10. In the film "The Way of Water", what does Jake Sully tell his children is most important?

Answer: Sullys stick together.

Probably one of the best sayings in the film is "Sullys stick together". Jake is as fierce a family protector as they come, and he instills this value in his children. At times Jake acts more like a unit commander than a father, but considering his family is at war this is probably a good thing. This mentality is the Sully family's greatest strength... and a liability. As a strength, the children are always there for each other to guard one another's backs. As a liability, when everything goes wrong ALL of them are in trouble together.

Interesting fact: Within the first 14 days of "The Way of Water" being released the film had grossed $1 billion, and within the first 40 days it had grossed $2 billion. This makes the film one of the top three most successful box office releases to that date.
