"Casanova" (2005) Trivia Quiz

This is by far one of my favorite romantic comedies with Heath Ledger. Heath starred in this movie after he filmed "Brokeback Mountain", and it was a time for him to have fun filming. You will fall in love with his portrayal of the heartbreaker Casanova!

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is Casanova's first name?

Answer: Giacomo

The first time we hear his first name is when his mother states it in the very beginning of the film, and we hear it several other times as the film progresses. In this movie, Heath Ledger plays a seemingly hopeless romantic playboy, whose only desire in life is to indulge himself in love's experience.

But when he meets a young Venetian woman who is disgusted by the reputation of the libertine Casanova, he changes his motives and ventures out on a whirlwind journey to discover the meaning of true love.
2. Who is Casanova's true love interest?

Answer: Francesca

In the beginning, Casanova is seen as a playboy, sleeping with a different woman every night until the Inquisition threatens his life. He decides to marry Victoria, a known virgin, but then falls madly in love with Francesca Bruni.
3. Who and what is 'Benardo Guardi'?

Answer: Francesca Bruni; 'nom de plume'

Francesca Bruni writes pamphlets as 'Bernardo Guardi' in order to get her sentiments on women known. In the film, she is an early version of a feminist, and she believes that women should not have to bow down to the whims of men. She wants: "a man who is man enough to give himself just to the woman who is worth him. If that woman were [her, she] would love him alone and forever." She is a very good role model for young girls because of these beliefs.
4. After reading one of Bernardo Guardi's unreleased pamphlets, what does Casanova, while pretending to be Senor Salvato, give to Francesca?

Answer: a pig

In the pamphlet, Francesca writes that a pig is the best companion for a woman. She writes this in order to discover whether or not someone read her pamphlets before they were published. Obviously, she found out that Casanova was the one who had read them, and when he came to her house to give her the pig, the maid who answered the door quaintly said: "My Lady says the pig must stay outside, but the animal, we'll take." She then proceeds to take the pet pig inside.
5. What does Casanova, while still impersonating Senor Salvato, have to confess when he follows Francesca to church?

Answer: Jealousy, Pride, Covetousness, Despair

By this point, Casanova is following Francesca everywhere, trying to understand her, and trying to figure out if she has a secret lover. He already knows that she is engaged, but then again, so is he to Victoria. He goes to the church and kneels next to Francesca.

After he says what he comes to confess, he asks her about her confessions. She simply replies that she "came to prepare [her] soul for marriage." After, Casanova follows Francesca out of the church and attempts to discover whether or not she has feelings for her betrothed.
6. Casanova also masquerades as whom in order to win Francesca's affection?

Answer: Paprizzio

Senor Paprizzio is from Genoa, and he is Francesca's betrothed. In order for him to spend as much time with her as possible, Casanova pretends to be Francesca's fiancé, thereby forcing Francesca to see Casanova's true colors: he loves her, and is not the frivolous vagabond that the Inquisition claims him to be.
7. What are the colors of Casanova's masks the night of Carnivali?

Answer: white and black

He wears the white mask when escorting Francesca, and the black mask when escorting Victoria. Casanova has to be careful to not be caught by the Inquisition, who undoubtedly will show up at the gala. Unfortunately, his disguises don't work for long, and by the end of the night, the audience sees him miserable in a jail cell.
8. The day that Paprizzio is supposed to meet Francesca for the first time, and the night of Carnivali, what do Casanova and Lupo smear all over Paprizzio?

Answer: lard

Paprizzio is a very unsightly fellow, having only one wish: to please his betrothed and to have her (Francesca) love him. When he believes that Casanova is Benardo Guardi, the famous author that seems to know everything about the whims of women, Paprizzio begs him to 'transform' him into the man seen in a portrait. Casanova of course obliges Paprizzio's wants, but tells him that he must never venture out of doors.

This allows Casanova to impersonate Paprizzio and get close to Francesca, who has never seen Paprizzio in person.
9. Who is the main Inquisitor hunting Casanova?

Answer: Pucci

He is the Vatican's most feared Inquisitor, and he comes all the way from Rome to Venice in order to purge the city of debauchery, heresy, fornication, and so on. Pucci and most others besides the Doge of Venice believe that those exact qualities are exhibited in Giacomo Casanova. Therefore, Pucci wants to catch Casanova and hang him for his treason.
10. Who comes to save Francesca and Casanova before they are hanged?

Answer: Casanova's mother

Right before they are hanged, Casanova's mother and her lover impersonate a cardinal and a nurse. While standing next to Pucci, they proclaim that it is the Pope's birthday, and because of the 'momentous occasion,' all criminals who are supposed to be hanged that day are to receive a full papal pardon.

When Casanova and Francesca escape, they join Casanova's mother in the theatre business, and become traveling actors - and they live happily ever after.
