quiz
Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Today, you are all full-fledged ensigns." Willie Keith has completed midshipman's school, graduating in the top five percent. Which Ivy League school did he graduate from in 1941?

Answer: Princeton

Willie Keith (Robert Francis) is a well-to-do recent graduate who has been assigned to the Caine. He expresses his disappointment to the captain of the U.S.S. Caine, but declares that he will do his best.
2. What type of ship is the Caine?

Answer: minesweeper

"She's not a battleship or a carrier, she's a beaten-up tub." Lt. Commander DeVriess (Tom Tully) tells Ensign Keith that he is in the junkyard navy, whether he likes it or not.
3. Who portrays Lt. Commander Phillip Francis Queeg?

Answer: Humphrey Bogart

Queeg (Humphrey Bogart) has relieved DeVriess of command and establishes himself as a "by the book" captain. The crew is a bit wary about this sudden transition in discipline and order. The departing DeVriess gives the crew a bit of advice concerning Queeg: "Take an even strain with the new skipper and everything will be all right."
4. During which war does the action of this film take place?

Answer: World War II

Captain Queeg assumes command of the Caine in November, 1943. They are in the midst of World War II. Captain Queeg has already endured two years of the war and perhaps is war weary.
5. What is the first relatively serious mistake committed by Queeg?

Answer: The ship makes a circle and severs its tow line.

While Queeg is reprimanding Ensign Keith, the new morale officer, for not enforcing his dress code, the ship circles around and cuts through their tow line. Queeg denies that this happened and Lt. Tom Keefer (Fred MacMurray) begins to have serious doubts about Queeg's mental state.
6. In an incident that finally persuades Lt. Meryk that Queeg's sanity may be in question, Captain Queeg demands the entire ship be searched for a duplicate key to an icebox that contained strawberries. Did they in fact, find a key?

Answer: No

The ship is turned upside down in a fruitless (no pun intended) quest to find the key. However, Ensign Harding has been called back to the States because his wife is ill. As he departs, he confesses to the other officers that there is no key. He tells them that the mess boys ate the strawberries. This incident convinces Lt. Meryk that Captain Queeg should be relieved of command.
7. What finally compels Lt. Meryk to take command of the Caine?

Answer: Captain Queeg misdirects the crew during a typhoon.

During a severe typhoon, the Caine is tossed and turned. Captain Queeg, under duress, makes some decisions, that in the eyes of the crew, have endangered the ship's safety.
8. Jose Ferrer is brilliant as the defense attorney for Lt. Meryk and Ensign Keith. What is his character's name?

Answer: Lt. Greenwald

Lt. Barney Greenwald reluctantly takes on the case for the defendants for the charge of mutiny. He is immediately suspicious of Lt. Keefer. Even so, he mounts a brilliant defense.
9. In the dramatic courtroom scene, the prosecution and defense call their respective witnesses in an effort to establish the guilt or innocence of Lt. Meryk. Who provides the most damaging testimony to Captain Queeg's case?

Answer: Captain Queeg

Six witnesses are called to the stand to explain their recollection of the events that had transpired on the Caine. Lt. Keefer denies any complicity in the entire ordeal. Lt. Meryk has to admit that he may be culpable. Ensign Keith simply lacks the experience to sway the panel.

However, Captain Queeg's own testimony, under the pinpoint scrutiny of Lt. Greenwald, reveals his own neurotic foibles under the pressure exacted by Lt. Greenwald.
10. Lt. Greenwald storms into the celebration party being held by the officers of the Caine. He is a bit tipsy, but proceeds to castigate the Caine officers for their celebration of a hollow victory. His singular animosity, however, is reserved for one particular officer of the Caine. Who is that officer?

Answer: Lt. Keefer

Lt. Greenwald has doubted the veracity of Lt. Keefer's original contentions and it is confirmed by Lt. Keefer's perjurous testimony. Lt. Keefer really instigated the entire procession but left the others to take the consequences. Lt. Greenwald submits that Lt. Keefer should have been the one to stand trial.

In a the final scene, Ensign Keith is assigned to a ship captained by the original commander of the Caine, Captain DeVriess.
