Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In 'City Lights', the viewing audience hears the Chaplin character utter audible words.

Answer: False

Chaplin's first 'talkie' would be the 1936 film 'Modern Times', and even then the creator of the little 'Tramp' character would not utter a word, but rather would only sing a nonsence song. The first film in which we hear Chaplin speak audible words would be 'The Great Dictator' from 1940.
2. In the credits, Charlie Chaplin is credited as 'Charlie Chaplin' rather than 'Charles Chaplin'.

Answer: True

Charlie Chaplin would only be credited as 'Charlie' in three of his films, namely 'The Circus', 'City Lights' and 'Modern Times'. In the rest of his films he was credited as 'Charles'.
3. As with many of his previous films, what 'occupation' did the Charlie Chaplin character have in 'City Lights'?

Answer: Tramp

'City Lights' marked the second-to-last appearance of Chaplin's 'Tramp' character. The last appearance of 'The Tramp' would be in 'Modern Times'.
4. In 'City Lights', the Chaplin character first appears at the dedication ceremony of what type of public monument?

Answer: Statue

There are some funny moments as the Tramp climbs around on the statue, attempting in his own strange way to get down off the new monument. The muted 'voice' sounds that are heard during this scene were actually made by Chaplin himself.
5. The Chaplin character becomes enamoured by a young woman played by Virginia Cherrill. What items are being sold by this blind young lady?

Answer: Flowers

This was the young Cherrill's first film appearance. She was only 22-years old at the time that 'City Lights' opened in theaters. Cherrill would appear in 13 other films before leaving the film industry in 1937.
6. Chaplin is befriended in the film by a mercurial millionaire. What is the name of the actor who played the role of Chaplin's rich sometimes benefactor, sometimes antagonist?

Answer: Harry Myers

Harry Myers was a film director in the 1910s, and appeared in scores of films from 1908 until his death in 1938.

In the film, the Myers character, an alcoholic millionaire, only enjoys the Tramp's friendship when he is drunk. After he becomes sober, he never remembers who the Tramp is.
7. Which future Hollywood 'blonde bombshell' made an uncredited appearance in 'City Lights'?

Answer: Jean Harlow

Jean Harlow can be seen briefly as an extra in the restaurant scene. She had starred the prior year in Howard Hughes' 'Hell's Angels', but had yet to hit it big. Later in 1931 she would appear in 'The Public Enemy' with James Cagney, the movie that really first put her in the limelight.
8. In several outrageous scenes, the Chaplin character attempts to acquire money in order to help his newfound love pay her monthly rent, and also to pay for surgery to correct her vision. Which sporting event does Chaplin take part in during one of these attempts?

Answer: Boxing

The Tramp attempts to make money by throwing a fight at a boxing match. Unfortunately, the man who he has agreed to fight (and lose to) has to run from the police. Chaplin ends up having to fight a brutish man who, after some hilarious in-ring antics by the Tramp, knocks out his hapless adversary. Chaplin comes away from the boxing match penniless.
9. Later, Chaplin returns to the millionaire's home, where his rich friend assures him that he will help pay for the poor girl's expenses. Is Chaplin ultimately able to acquire money from the millionaire?

Answer: Yes

Indeed, the millionaire offers the Tramp a thousand dollars. After two men attempt to rob the money, and succeed in clubbing the millionaire unconscious, Chaplin is left with the thousand dollars. A policeman arrives and the millionaire is revived. Unfortunately, he has 'come to his senses' and does not recognize his little friend, the Tramp.

The Tramp is forced to run away, evading a pack of policemen. All the while, he is able to hang on to the money he has had to snatch from the millionaire's hand.
10. Is Chaplin's lady love ever able to see who her true benefactor is?

Answer: Yes

The blind girl has used the money given to her by the Tramp to have surgery done on her eyes. With her restored vision, she finally encounters and recognizes the man who has been her savior. The film ends with a very poignant scene between the two.
