Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Perseus, the son of Zeus, had fallen in love with Andromeda at first sight. He needed to rescue her before she was to marry the monster Calibos. Who played the dashing Perseus?

Answer: Harry Hamlin

Calibos had been betrothed to Andromeda, but because of his greed, the great Zeus had turned him into a monster. Andromeda had turned away from Calibos, so her mother asked suitors to apply for her daughter's hand. Calibos wouldn't let Andromeda go without making it very difficult for her suitors. He devised riddles which they had to solve, or they would die at the burning stake.
2. Perseus decided to go into Calibos' swamp lair and try to solve the riddle. After a brutal fight in which Perseus hacked off Calibos' hand, he solved the riddle and ultimately won the hand of Andromeda. Andromeda was played by Judi Bowker.

Answer: True

Queen Cassiopeia, Andromeda's mother, was delighted that this handsome young man had won her daughter's hand, and foolishly compared her daughter's beauty to that of the Goddess Thetis, Calibos' mother. Thetis' wrath came down upon them, and she ordered the Kraken, a giant sea monster, to destroy their city and take Andromeda in thirty days, unless Perseus could find a way to defeat it.
3. Perseus had enlisted the help of a very special beast, and had already used him to get to Calibos' swamp. The beautiful animal drank at the river at a certain time of day and Perseus captured it. What was the name of this magnificent creature?

Answer: Pegasus

Pegasus, the winged horse, was the last of Zeus' herd. Perseus was told that he would have to go on a perilous journey to find out how to destroy the Kraken, and Pegasus would be his ultimate transport.
4. Perseus had also been given a few gifts from the Gods to help him on his way. Zeus had the Gods make his son an invincible shield, sword and helmet, and the Goddess Athena had a golden owl, named Bubo, made for him.

Answer: True

The little creature made lots of wheezy, clicky noises, but was clearly understood by Perseus. It became his companion and helped him out on many occasions.
5. Perseus, with his trusty soldiers, set out on his quest. They had to find the home of three lovely ladies who would tell him how to defeat the Kraken. Who were they?

Answer: The Stygian Witches

All three of them were blind and used a magic crystal ball to see who was approaching. They were also cannibals, and their cauldron was full of bones and body parts of the last person who hadn't made it out of there!
6. The witches told Perseus that the only thing that would defeat the Kraken was the head of what other lovely lady?

Answer: Medusa

One look at this gal and you turned to stone. There were statues eveywhere of all the poor unfortunates who had met their doom. Perseus and his brave soldiers fought off a three-headed wolf which guarded Medusa, and then they crept into her lair.
7. Medusa appeared with a rattle of her tail, and the hiss of the snakes that were her hair. She was a truly hideous sight, but Perseus managed to cut off her head by watching her in the reflection of his shield.

Answer: True

When the body of Medusa fell forward in death, her tail still rattled and writhed. The liquid which came out of the orifice was like acid and it melted Perseus' shield.
8. When Perseus and his men camped out on their way home, Medusa's head was inside a blanket, tied to a tree. An old adversary waited until they slept, and then stuck his sword into the blanket, releasing Medusa's blood. Who was he?

Answer: Calibos

As Calibos released Medusa's blood, the most enormous scorpions were formed from the earth. Perseus and his brave men fought them, but only Perseus survived.
9. Perseus and Calibos fought to the death. Perseus killed Calibos and continued his journey with the head of Medusa. Which creature did Perseus tell Bubo to go in search of?

Answer: Pegasus

Pegasus was being kept at Calibos' swamp, and was enclosed in a wooden cell. Little Bubo flew into the cave, distracted Calibos' minions, and managed to release him.
10. Perseus eventually got his beloved winged horse back, and they flew on to where Andromeda was chained to the sea wall. The Kraken appeared and knocked Pegasus into the sea, but Perseus managed to swim to shore. He had lost the head of Medusa in the melee, but Bubo again saved the day by managing to grab the bag and drop it into the sea beside Perseus.

Answer: True

Perseus took Medusa's head out of the blanket and held it up by the hair. Medusa's eyes glowed, the Kraken turned to stone and then broke into pieces which disappeared under the sea. The invincible Pegasus flew out of the water with great effect, and Perseus and Andromeda lived happily ever after.
