In London, Dan and Alice (Jude Law and Natalie Portman) first meet on the street after she's hit by a car. After being treated at the hospital, Alice and Dan spend some time getting to know each other. He tells her he writes obituaries (but is an aspiring novelist) and explains some of the euphemisms they use in them.

She tells Dan that she has fled New York after a relationship ended. They visit a park where there are plaques with the names of people who died saving the lives of others. Dan mentions that he visited the park twenty years ago with his father just after his mother died. Dan introduces himself, and she introduces herself as Alice Ayres.

Dan and Alice have been together for over a year, and Dan has written his first novel (about Alice's life). Dan is having photos taken for the book jacket. He is attracted to the photographer, Anna (Julia Roberts), who is also attracted to him. They begin kissing, but she pulls back after she finds out that Dan is living with Alice. Alice meets Dan at Anna's studio and asks to have her photo taken.

When Anna and Alice are alone, Alice tells Anna that she heard Anna and Dan talking about their kiss. Alice begins crying, and when Anna tries to apologize, Alice tells her to just take the picture.

Anna mentioned to Dan at the photo session that she liked hanging out at the aquarium because fish are therapeutic and she finds people to photograph there. She had also suggested that "The Aquarium" would be a better title for Dan's novel. Dan, upset that Anna rebuffed him, pretends to be a woman named Anna in an internet chat room where he/she meets Larry, and arranges to meet the next day at the London Aquarium.

After they realize that Larry (Clive Owen) is the victim of a practical joke, Anna and Larry hit it off.

The following year, Alice and Dan receive an invitation to attend Anna's show. While standing in front of her photo (the photo Anna took when Alice began crying), Alice meets Larry, who is attracted to her but resists the temptation to do anything about it.

After attending the show, Dan is leaving for a weekend business trip. He puts Alice in a taxi, but then goes back inside to talk to Anna.

Since they fell in love after he unintentionally got them together at the aquarium, Anna and Larry refer to Dan as their cupid. At the exhibition, Anna tells Dan how she and Larry met, thanks to him, and says, "Nice work, Cupid." Dan's novel has since been published, and was a failure.

He jokingly tells Anna it was because of the title, which he had changed to "The Aquarium" at her suggestion.

Anna tells Larry that she's in love with Dan, whom she's been seeing, and she's leaving Larry.

Wearing a pink wig, Alice is pretending she doesn't know who Larry is, even when they're in a private room together. When Alice says she's been doing this for three months, Larry comments that she started right after he (meaning Dan) left her. Alice is going by the name Jane, and Larry insists on knowing what her real name is.

She insists her name is Jane, even after Larry keeps giving her money to tell him the truth.

It's months after they've both split with their partners, and Anna is late meeting Dan at the opera. She has come from meeting Larry to sign divorce papers, and Dan asks how it went. Anna is acting a bit oddly, and through flashbacks, we see that Larry made a deal with her. If she had sex with him, he would sign the papers.

She agreed, and Dan realizes that this is what happened. He's very upset about it, and apparently couldn't get past it, because the next time we see him, he's going to Larry's surgery to tell him he wants Anna back.

Larry tells Dan that Anna chose to be back with him and that's where she wants to stay. He recommends that Dan get back with Alice, but Dan replies that he doesn't know where to find her. Larry tells Dan he ran into Alice, and he saw her naked, but he didn't sleep with her.

He writes down the name of the club where Alice works, and just as Dan is about to leave, Larry tells him he lied, he did sleep with Alice. Larry was always brutally honest.

Dan and Alice are back together, and getting ready to leave on a trip to New York. Dan pressures Alice for the truth about whether she and Larry slept together, but she realizes he wouldn't be able to forgive her for it. Dan leaves to get cigarettes, but comes right back. Alice tells him that she doesn't love him anymore, which in her mind makes it OK for her to leave him (she had told him when they first met that if she still loved someone, she wouldn't leave them).

When she arrives back in New York and goes through customs, her passport shows that her name really is Jane Jones. Dan is later walking through the same park he and Alice went to when they first met, when he sees a plaque showing the name Alice Ayres.
