Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the name of the song that plays both at the beginning, and the end of the movie?

Answer: The Blower's Daughter

All four possible answers are quotes from the actual song, but the title is "The Blower's Daughter". The song is by Damien Rice, and is from his album 'O'.
2. Who directed "Closer"?

Answer: Mike Nichols

"Closer" was based on Patrick Marber's play by the same name. Mike Nichols also directed "The Graduate" in 1967, for which he won a Best Director Oscar.
3. What is Alice's real name?

Answer: Jane

We find this out when Alice returns to America and we see her passport. However, we hear her name prior to this point. When she is in the strip club with Larry, he keeps giving her money and asking her name. She keeps telling him "Thank you, my name is Jane." So she really is telling him the truth, but he doesn't believe her.
4. What are Alice's first words when she wakes up after being hit by the taxi?

Answer: Hello stranger

These are also the first words of the film. Alice is distracted by Dan, who she sees across the street. She doesn't see the taxi coming, and walks right into the street. She says "hello stranger" to Dan, who takes her to the hospital even though he doesn't know her.
5. What does Dan do for a living?

Answer: He's an obituarist.

After Alice is checked out at the hospital, Dan and Alice discuss his career while spending some time together. While on a bus, he tells her about the people he has written about, and how he has to make up euphemisms about them because their real lives were too embarrassing. Alice asks him to make up a euphemism about her:

Alice: "What would my euphemism be?"
Dan: "She was... disarming."
Alice: "That's not a euphemism."
Dan: "Yes, it is."
6. Where is the only place that all four main characters are in the same room?

Answer: The exhibition

The exhibition is to showcase Anna's photographic work. Anna and Larry are there together because they're dating. She invites Dan and Alice because Alice's photograph is part of the exhibition. After this point, only one or two of the main characters are in the same place. Only Anna and Larry are at the aquarium.

In the strip club, it is just Alice and Larry, or Alice and Dan, and only Anna and Dan appear in the scene at the opera.
7. Natalie Portman won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Alice.

Answer: False

Both Natalie Portman and Clive Owen were nominated for Best Supporting Actor/Actress roles at the Academy Awards, but neither won. However, both did win for Best Supporting Actor/Actress at the Golden Globes.
8. Who is the only character that does not cheat on anybody else?

Answer: Alice

While they're still married, Larry cheats on Anna during a trip to America. Anna cheats on Larry by having an affair with Dan while she is married to Larry. Dan cheats on Alice during their relationship, when he has an affair with Anna. The only person Alice sleeps with other than Dan is Larry, and that is after she and Dan have broken up.
9. Which character is nicknamed 'Cupid'?

Answer: Dan

Larry and Anna create this nickname for Dan, because it was his fault that the two of them met in the first place. While posing as a woman named Anna in a chat room, Dan chats with Larry and arranges to meet at the aquarium. It is there that Larry meets the real Anna, and the two of them start going out.
10. Complete this quote, "What's so great about the truth? Try lying for a change, it's the __________ of the world."

Answer: currency

This quote by Dan summarizes one of the the main themes of "Closer", which is that people basically crave the truth, but at the same time are afraid of it. This movie is full of people lying to protect or hurt others, or telling the truth to protect or hurt others. Dan says this to Anna when he finds out that while they were together, she slept with Larry.
