2. Why was there never a sequel for "E.T. the Extra- Terrestrial?

Answer: Spielberg could not think of a suitable plot.

Steven Spielberg was going to do a sequel but could not think of a suitable follow up to the original movie. He told Universal that he could not do justice to the original with a sequel and that it stood unique and complete on its own. The studio agreed and thus no sequel (YET).

He could go back and do sequels to more classics. This was from an interview with Steven Spielberg as part of extras on the anniversary edition of "E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial". There is also a good actors' reunion included as well.
