Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Stanton Carlysle gets a job at a seedy carnival in 1939 and becomes fascinated with one of the acts, a man who bites the head off a live chicken. What is the name of this act?

Answer: Geek

The geek show was a traditional part of a carnival, and usually the most lurid. The carnival owner tells Stan that the best way to find a geek is to "pick up a broken drunk", not difficult because many men returned from World War I "addicted to the poppy". So he says the job is only temporary "until we get ourselves another geek", but then he provides the poor man with alcohol laced with opium until he has no choice.
The word "geek" is now considered extremely offensive and is taken here from the script.
2. One of the carnival acts is Madame Zeena, played by Toni Collette, who works with her husband Pete, played by David Straithairn. What kind of act do they have?

Answer: Mind reading

Zeena and Pete use an elaborate word code that allows her to pretend to guess items and answer questions while blindfolded. "Each word has a number," she explains,"and that number leads you to a different word...People are desperate to tell you who they are. Desperate to be seen."
3. Stan wants to learn Zeena and Pete's act so that he and Molly, a pretty carnival girl, can leave the carnival and start their own show. One day Pete is found dead. What is the apparent cause?

Answer: He drank poisoned alcohol.

Pete, an alcoholic, was trying to stop drinking, but Stan gave him a bottle of liquor. It was not clearly stated, but it appears that he drank wood alcohol or alcohol that had been poisoned.
The carnival owner had shown Stan that the wood alcohol, kept for pickling specimens like a two-headed calf for the side show, was kept in a red box, and the drinking alcohol in a blue box, and warned Stan not to mix them up. When Pete is found dead, Stan realizes that he might have given Pete a bottle from the red box.
4. Stan and Molly learn Zeena and Pete's act and are working in a fancy nightclub in Buffalo, where a beautiful patron claims that the act is a fake and challenges him to tell her what is in her purse. What is it?

Answer: A gun

Dr. Lilith Ritter, played by Cate Blanchett, is impressed by Stan's skills but still believes the act is a gimmick. She looks for a way to take advantage of him. She records all her analysis sessions and therefore has intimate information on many of Buffalo's rich and influential citizens.
Stan later tells Dr. Ritter that he deduced there was a gun in the bag because it was clearly very heavy for its size, and because she was an elegant woman he guessed that it was nickel-plated and had ivory handles. He got lucky with that part, but she was impressed with his perception.
5. Another patron at the nightclub is Judge Kimball, who wants to hire Stan for a private reading. What does the judge want Stan to do?

Answer: Contact his dead son

Judge Kimball and his wife have been tormented with grief since the death of their son. Dr. Ritter, the psychiatrist, has seen Kimball professionally, and she offers to give him personal information about the judge to help him give a convincing reading.
6. Another former patient of Dr. Ritter is the rich and powerful Ezra Grindle, who also wants a reading. He wants to know about a dead woman named Dorrie. Why does he want to know about her?

Answer: He forced her to have an illegal abortion.

Dr. Ritter tells Stan that Grindle is an angry and unstable man, and he has been cruel to many women since Dorrie's death. She tells him that he's haunted by her loss. Before he engages Stan, he makes Stan submit to a lie detector test, and Stan then announces that the spirit of Dorris is in the room.
7. Grindle demands that Stan contact Dorrie in a seance. Grindle is paying Stan a lot of money for these sessions and Dr. Ritter is hiding it for him so Molly won't find out about it. Grindle insists on seeing Molly. How do they accomplish this?

Answer: Molly dresses up as Dorrie.

Molly is uncomfortable about this ploy and doesn't want to do it, but Stan talks her into it. She dresses as Dorrie and stands at a distance, but Grindle realizes the fake and hits Stan. Stan beats Grindle to death and runs over Grindle's bodyguard.
8. Now Stan is alone and on the run. He heads to Dr. Ritter's office for his money. What happens there?

Answer: She shoots at him.

Ritter does trick Stan by giving him a few singles, but she's keeping all the rest of his money. He's been drinking and is frantic. She taunts him and shoots at him, nicking him in the ear.
9. Does Stan convince Judge Kimball that he has reached the spirit of his dead son?

Answer: Yes

Stan does convince Judge Kimball and his wife Felicia that he has contacted their son, Julian, who died in World War I, and that they will one day be reunited. Felicia is so desperate for this reunion that she shoots her husband, and then herself.
10. Where does Stan end up at the end of the movie?

Answer: Another carnival

Stan descends into full-blown alcoholism and is in dire straits. He finds another carnival and asks for a job, but the only one available is that of the geek. He breaks down and laughs hysterically. He answers, "Mister, I was born for it."
