The fifth movie in the "Indiana Jones" franchise does not disappoint. In fact, I would go so far as to say that it provides some redemption. The quiz does contain spoilers so please watch the film before playing the quiz!

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The film begins with a flashback. We find Indiana and his friend, Basil, searching for another religious artifact. What group are they up against, who are also trying to get their hands on the artifact?

Answer: the Nazis

As in two of the previous movies, Indiana is trying to keep the artifact, with its believed powers, out of the hands of the Nazis who are trying to get hold of it for Hitler.
In "Raiders of the Lost Ark" it is the Ark of the Covenant that is sought and in "The Last Crusade" it is the Holy Grail. In "The Dial of Destiny" the object being sought is the Lance of Longinus, which is also known as the Spear of Destiny.
In the movies, Hitler's representatives talk about how Hitler believes that possession of these items will make his armies invincible.
Basil was played by Toby Jones.

These scenes were set during WWII and both Harrison Ford (who plays Indiana) and Mads Mikkelsen (who plays Dr. Jurgen Voller) are made to appear younger by CGI.
2. Does Indy take the the Lance of Longinus?

Answer: No

After a hard fought battle, he does manage to take possession of the Lance, however he determines that the piece is a fake - a reproduction. He makes his escape without the Lance, although he has to fight to free his friend who has been captured, leaving it for the Nazis. Dr. Voller, the chief Nazi scientist, also declares it to be a fake, from the age of the metal of the blade and the engravings, when he has his hands on it. The Lance of Longinus (or Spear of Destiny) is believed by many to be a real artifact (like the Ark and the Grail).

It is thought to be the weapon that was used to pierce Jesus' side as he hung on the cross. Thus, among believers, it is thought to have the blood of Christ on it.
3. We next see an older-looking, 1960's Indy teaching a class to some very unprepared students (except for one). He is unimpressed with their lack of enthusiasm. What event does he walk into, after the class is dismissed?

Answer: a retirement party for him

There are a banner, balloons and noisemakers and he is gifted with a clock. Many congratulations are given and Indy tries to smile and pretend to be grateful. We later see him outside, giving the clock to the first person he sees. He is generally despondent and we later learn that his son has died and his marriage broken up because he and his wife couldn't help each other get through their grief.
He goes into a bar where he meets with the one student, who was in his class, who answered questions. It turns out that she is his goddaughter, Helena, whom he hasn't seen since she was 12 years old. She is the daughter of his friend Basil and Indy used to call her Wombat.
She wants to talk to Indy about the Antikythera (the Dial of Destiny), which her father had had a piece of in his possession, and which had driven him crazy.

The Antikythera is indeed a real artifact that was invented by Archimedes. It was named for the Greek island it was found off the coast of. It has complicated mechanisms for tracking things like eclipses and positions of the sun and the moon. In the movie it is believed to be able to locate fissures in time and in that way allow time travel.
Helena was played by Phoebe Waller-Bridge.
4. Helena tries to trick Indy into revealing the location of the half of the Antikythera, by pretending that she didn't remember him taking it from her father. She presents an argument for where it must be, asking Indy to help her retrieve it. Where is the half actually located?

Answer: in the archive room

In the past, Indy and Basil had the piece with them when they jumped off the train full of Nazis into the river below. However it was recovered and Basil (Helena's father) had been obsessing over it for years. He had determined that it should be destroyed but Indy stopped him and took the piece of Antikythera, promising to destroy it.

Instead he hid it in the archives. Believing that Helena did not remember any of the night that he relieved her father of the piece, he takes her down to a room, with the word Archive on the door, to show her the piece, which she takes.

At this point Dr. Voller and his Nazi friends show up, also wanting the Antikythera, and the chase begins. Once a scientist for Hitler, Dr. Voller has been working with NASA so he is initially supported by the CIA, as well as his own thugs.
5. When they exit the building there is a parade going on. Who or what was the parade in benefit of?

Answer: the Apollo 11 astronauts

These were the first men to walk on the moon and 'ticker tape parades' were very common ways of honouring people at the time. Among marching bands, cheerleaders, banners announcing the astronauts and ticker tape, actors representing the three men can be seen riding on the back of a convertible and waving to the crowd. Through this pandemonium, Indy is chasing Helena who is also being chased by Dr. Voller and friends, as everyone is seeking the piece of the Antikythera.

At one point Indy commandeers a police horse and rides that throughout the chase while being pursued by a man on a motorcycle.
6. What does Helena want to do with the piece of the Antikythera?

Answer: sell it

Indy tracks her down to a private function where she is auctioning off the piece. She tries to have him thrown out but Voller and crew show up and take possession of the piece.
At one point Indy asks her what she would do with it and she says 'sell it' because the only thing she believes in is money.
She asks Indy the same question and he says that he would stop his son from enlisting, thereby saving his life. That gives Helena pause.

Helena has acquired a friend who she calls Teddy. He is much like Short Round was to Indy in "Temple of Doom", only perhaps a little older. Despite claiming to be all about money, it is obvious that Helena really cares for Teddy and the bad guys later use this against her.
Teddy is played by Ethan Isidore.
7. Where do they find the directions that give them the location of the second half of the Antikythera?

Answer: on a shipwreck

The first half of the Antikythera had been found by sponge divers on a shipwreck near Greece. Indy and Helena reason that the ship had been staffed with too many soldiers to not be carrying something very important. They speculate that the directions to the second half are also on the wreck, but on the part that had fallen over the ledge into water that was far too deep for sponge divers. They decide that their next move will be to explore the wreck and head to Greece.
There they find a diver who is a friend of Indy's. They are diving so deep that he gives them only 3 minutes in the depths so that they can surface without getting the Bends.
They find what they are looking for. Unfortunately Voller and his thugs are waiting when they surface, holding Teddy hostage.
The directions are written in code which Indy refuses to read for them. Helena does read it (after they shoot Indy's friend) but gives them the wrong directions. She tells them what was written in the wax but has already determined that Archimedes was more clever than that and has concealed the real location. She, Indy and Teddy figure this out. The boat they dive from has been rendered unusable so they steal Voller's boat and go racing off in the right direction. Voller watches through binoculars and notes that they are not going the way they told him to go. So he of course follows when he can.
The diver is played by Antonio Banderas.
8. After finding the real location Indy and Helena find Archimedes' resting place. What strange image do they find on the carvings of the sarcophagus?

Answer: propellors

There is a phoenix, a classic symbol of rebirth, in the carvings but Helena also notices the carvings of propellors on the Phoenix, which had not been invented at the time of Archimedes' death. Inside, with Archimedes' remains, they find the other half of the Antikythera, and on the skeleton's wrist is a wristwatch. They speculate that this proves that the Antikythera must have worked at least once.
Unfortunately Voller and his thugs, still holding Teddy hostage, show up and take the second piece of the Antikythera, putting it together with the first piece they had taken from Indy and Helena.
Teddy manages to escape from the very large man who is holding him handcuffed.
9. Why does Dr. Voller want the complete Antikythera so badly?

Answer: He wants to go back in time and kill Hitler.

At one point Indy asks him why he wants the artifact so badly and Voller tels him that he wants to go back to a specific time and a stated address. Indy recognises the address and asks why Voller, who believes in the Nazis, wants to kill Hitler. Voller replies that he believes in winning and, with the benefit of seeing how the war turned out, he could go back and make sure he didn't make the mistakes that Hitler made, ensuring that they would win.
10. Whom does Indy meet near the end of the film?

Answer: Archimedes

Indy and Helena are in the plane with Voller and his thugs when Voller sets the Antikythera. Helena tells Teddy to steal a smaller plane that is sitting there and follow them. Teddy has never flown before, only gone through the motions in pretend, but he does manage to hot wire the plane and get it off the ground in time to take up pursuit.
As they approach the visible time fissure in the clouds, it occurs to Indy that Archimedes would not have known about the Continental Drift and would not have taken that into consideration. He yells that they are not going to end up where Voller wants. At the last minute Voller tries to abort the flight, but is too late and they are drawn through, back in time to the Siege of Syracuse, which occurred in 213-212 B.C.E. Fierce fighting is going on and the plane is hit by projectiles from number of catapults, causing it to crash. Archimedes rides out to see this strange phenomenon, coming face to face with Indy. He also notices the watch on Voller's wrist, the one that turns up in the sarcophagus. Indy expresses a desire to stay but Helena knocks him out.
Meanwhile the owner of the plane that Teddy has stolen has woken. He rescues Indy and Helena and flies them back through the time fissure.
