Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Mo was reading a story to his wife and baby daughter the first time he "read" something out of a book. What item did we see come out of this story?

Answer: a red hooded cape

Mo read from "Little Red Riding Hood", even though Resa noted that Meggie was too young to be read to. It was just after he'd read the description of the red velvet cape that Mo noticed something odd happen, but he didn't know what it was. The narrator explained that most silvertongues, as they're called, prefer to keep their gift a secret, but some don't even know they have it.

The cape was shown flying through the air and landing unnoticed on the clothesline outside the window.
2. The excitement and joy that books provide to their readers was discussed by a passionate book collector, who also explained to Meggie that books "love anyone who opens them". Who was this?

Answer: Elinor

When Elinor first caught Meggie in the library, she thought Meggie wouldn't know how to appreciate Elinor's books. But, as Meggie described the qualities of Elinor's prized Persian manuscript, Elinor realized that Meggie valued books quite a bit. Meggie asked if she'd been to Persia, and Elinor responded, "Yes, a hundred times. Along with St. Petersburg, Paris, Middle-Earth, distant planets and Shangri-la. And I never had to leave this room. Books are adventure.

They contain murder and mayhem and passion.

They love anyone who opens them." She pointed out to Meggie the window seat where Resa used to love to read, and then handed Meggie one of her mother's books. It was in the library later that Meggie first heard the voices from the books.
3. Not having found Mo for so many years, Capricorn had enlisted the services of another reader named Darius. Why couldn't Darius completely read people, or things, out of books?

Answer: He stuttered.

After being brought to Capricorn's village, Mo, Meggie and Elinor were taken into the stables. There, they found a strange mixture of creatures, all with words on them, just like Capricorn's henchmen. Later, Capricorn had Darius read "Rapunzel" to demonstrate what the problem was. Darius read Rapunzel out, but she had words on her face because she'd only been half read out of the book, due to the stuttering. Darius, himself a hostage of Capricorn, felt pity for the creatures he had read out of the books (in addition to the words written on them, some of them had deformities), and looked after them.
4. Capricorn was adamant that he wanted to remain in the real world; after all, he did have a castle. When he was explaining to Mo why he didn't want to go back into the book, he mentioned a particular item from the real world that he loved. What was it?

Answer: Duct tape

Mo thought Capricorn wanted to go back in to "Inkheart", but that was definitely not what Capricorn wanted. He asked Mo why he would want to go back when Mo's world was so accommodating. They had telephones and guns, and, he asked Basta, "What's that sticky stuff called?".

When Basta told him duct tape, Capricorn said, "Yes, duct tape. I love duct tape." As Capricorn threw Mo's long-sought copy of "Inkheart" into the fire, Mo and Dustfinger protested, each of them seeing their last hope of reuniting with their wives going up in flames. Dustfinger burned his hands getting the book out of the fire, but was restrained as Capricorn threw it back in.
5. Dustfinger had a friend in the village, named Resa, who was constantly trying to escape. As soon as Dustfinger realized that Resa was Mo's wife, he reunited them.

Answer: False

After tending to Dustfinger's burns, Resa showed him a drawing of her husband and daughter, who Dustfinger recognized as Mo and Meggie. "You went in when I came out", he said, realizing what he should do. All he told the confused Resa was that he'd get her out of her chains and she'd be back home soon.

Intending to release Mo and reunite him with Resa, Dustfinger went to the stables. He overheard Meggie say that maybe the author had a copy of "Inkheart", and decided not to say anything about Resa until they obtained this copy and Mo could read him back in. Dustfinger wanted to be with his family again and feared Mo wouldn't help him once Mo had his wife back.
6. With the help of a book he'd brought with him, Dustfinger planned a diversion to help everyone escape from the stables. What was the title of this book which Mo read from?

Answer: The Wizard of Oz

Meggie had been reading the book when Dustfinger and the others arrived at Elinor's house. Basta threw it on the fire, but Dustfinger got it out for Meggie, who refused to take it from him. Dustfinger handed the book to Mo in the stables, recommending that he read page fourteen, which described the cyclone. Mo, Meggie, Elinor, Farid and Dustfinger managed to escape Capricorn's village during the resulting turmoil.
7. Mo and the others went to Alassio to find Fenoglio, the writer of "Inkheart". Meggie and Mo explained their situation to him, but Fenoglio thought the idea of silvertongues was absurd. When did he finally believe that Mo and Meggie were telling the truth about the characters being read out of his book?

Answer: When he saw Dustfinger fire juggling in the piazza

When they found out where Fenoglio lived, Dustfinger didn't want to meet him, but wanted to wait in the square with Farid. Meggie guessed correctly that Dustfinger was afraid to meet the writer because he didn't want to find out how his story ends. Meggie and Mo told Fenoglio that Dustfinger was in the piazza, but it wasn't until Fenoglio saw Dustfinger fire juggling that he finally believed what he'd been told. Fenoglio insisted on meeting Dustfinger, but then blurted out that he dies in the book. Knowing this, Dustfinger still wanted to go back to be with his wife, commenting that he could control his own fate.
8. Fenoglio was captivated by the magical place he'd created, and impressed at the way his characters were just like he'd written them. After things had settled down, Fenoglio asked Meggie to read him into "Inkheart".

Answer: True

When Fenoglio first saw Dustfinger in the piazza, he exclaimed that the way he felt must be how it feels to give birth. Meggie was left in Alassio with him when Mo and Dustfinger left for Capricorn's lair to get Resa. While testing her new-found reading skill, Meggie read Toto out of "The Wizard of Oz". Basta and Flatnose showed up right after, and took her, Fenoglio, and Toto, to Capricorn. Meggie read the Shadow out of "Inkheart", but then started to read what Fenoglio had written to get the Shadow to turn on Capricorn. Elinor showed up, mobilized Darius and the creatures from the stable, and they all joined the fracas. Envious of the characters in his book, Fenoglio requested that Meggie read him into "Inkheart", after all the bad guys had been vanquished.
9. After Meggie read Capricorn, his henchmen and all the creatures back into their respective books, Mo, Meggie and Resa were reunited. As they were preparing to go, Meggie noticed that "Inkheart" was missing from the podium. Who took the book?

Answer: Farid

Farid and Dustfinger were in the castle, setting fires to distract Capricorn, when Meggie sent all who were in her presence back to their own stories. Dustfinger tried to get down there in time, but realized he'd missed his chance. He was going to ask Mo to read him back, but seeing Mo and his family happily reuniting, Dustfinger decided not to bother them.

He left the village, but Farid managed to catch up with him, and proudly handed him the book. Farid asked to go with him and said that they could find another reader.
10. Farid assured everyone that Dustfinger wouldn't die the way that Fenoglio had told them he would. What did he do to change the ending Fenoglio had written for Dustfinger in "Inkheart"?

Answer: He kept Gwin with him.

Mo caught up to Dustfinger and Farid, said he'd promised to send Dustfinger back, and he was going to do it. Mo read Dustfinger back into "Inkheart", where he was reunited with his wife. Fenoglio had said earlier that Dustfinger was killed in the book by Capricorn's henchmen because he was protecting Gwin. Farid figured that if Gwin didn't go back into the book with Dustfinger, Dustfinger wouldn't die. Farid, who had said earlier that he didn't want to go back into his stinking book, was invited to stay with Mo and his family.
