Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
Answer:
"The Great Escape" (1963) was based on real events that took place in the prisoner of war camp known as Stalag Luft III during World War II, with some liberal application of poetic license. The names given to the tunnels, the number of escapees and the number who were executed were all true to life. Most, if not all, of the characters were composites of real people.
Sedgwick, the Australian, was the character who escaped to Spain, and was played by James Coburn. Danny and Willie, Tunnel Kings, were shown boarding a ship that would take them safely to Sweden. They were played by Charles Bronson and John Leyton. Roger Bartlett, Big X (based on the real officer Roger Bushell) was played by Richard Attenborough. James Garner and Donald Pleasence were Hendley and Blythe, who tried, unsuccessfully, to escape in a stolen aeroplane. Steve McQueen, as Hilts, nearly made it to Switzerland on his stolen motorcycle. MacDonald, played by Gordon Jackson, made the slip he'd warned others against, of answering in English when a German wished him "Good luck!" He was last seen alongside Roger, as a German machine gun opened fire. Ashley-Pitt (David McCallum) had earlier sacrificed himself in a railway station, attempting to let others escape.
Angus Lennie was Ives, who had tried a couple of breakouts alongside Hilts, eventually being shot on the wire when the first tunnel was found. The Senior British Officer (SBO), Group Captain Ramsey was played by James Donald, and did not attempt to leave the camp via the tunnel. He it was that received word of the executions, from von Luger, the camp commandant (Hannes Messemer). Robert Graf played the ferret (guard), Werner, who had been tricked by Hendley into providing items the prisoners needed when preparing for the escape.
The incorrect choices all have appeared in films about World War II, some of them in the role of prisoner of war, but not in this movie.
