Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Actress Pamela Duncan stars as Diana Love in "The Undead" (1957). What is her character's 20th century occupation?

Answer: a prostitute

Quintus Ratcliff, a psychical researcher, pays Diana Love, a beautiful prostitute, $500 to allow him to place her in an hypnotic trance. His goal is to "regress" her to a previous life. Quintus' former teacher, Professor Ulbrecht Olinger, reluctantly witnesses the procedure.

Despite her misgivings, Love consents to be placed in a trance lasting two days. For perspective, her $500 fee had the modern purchasing power of roughly $5,429.
2. Three of these titles are genuine, bona fide, for-real, professionally-produced and theatrically-released motion pictures from the 1950s. Which one is *NOT*?

Answer: The Cosmic Creature

A tagline for "Creature From the Black Lagoon" (1954) was "Creature from a million years ago! ... every man his mortal enemy... and a woman's beauty his prey!" A tagline for "Creature with the Atom Brain" (1955) was "A dead man walks the streets to stalk his prey! So terrifying only screams can describe it!" A tagline for "The She-Creature" (1957) was "Hypnotized! Reincarnated as a monster from hell!"

"Cosmic Creatures" is a 2022 series of children's books by British writer Tom Huddleston and illustrator Sophy Williams. There is a tarot deck called the "The Cosmic Creature Deck" created by Jerome Timinski. There is not a 1950s sci-fi nor horror film named "The Cosmic Creature".
3. How many monsters are encountered on the asteroid orbiting Mars in "Battle Beyond the Sun" (1959)?

Answer: two

The astronauts land on an asteroid orbiting Mars. There are two monsters there, One is an Eyeballs-Where-Hands-Oughta-Be Monster; the other is a Vertical-Abdominal-Mouth-with-Sharp-Teeth Monster. One of these is interested in eating an astronaut but they are both more interested in fighting with each other, which allows the astronauts to escape them.
4. Who played Sue Allen in "House of Wax" (1953)?

Answer: Phyllis Kirk

Phyllis Kirk (1927-2006) plays Sue Allen in "House of Wax". She recognizes her recently-deceased roommate, Cathy Gray (played by Carolyn Jones), as the figure of Joan of Arc in Professor Jarrod's exhibit. The professor tells her that she is the perfect image of Marie Antoinette, foreshadowing the outcome of the film. Sue confirms that the wax figure is actually Cathy Gray but is captured by Professor Jarrod and his henchperson Igor.

She is shackled to a table onto which hot wax will pour but the police break in at the last moment and move the table with her on it.
5. What did Dr. Roland Gerard and Chaka each bring to their cooperative venture in "Voodoo Woman" (1957)?

Answer: modern medicine / voodoo

Dr. Roland Gerard, the mad scientist played by Tom Conway, and Chaka, the witch doctor, played by Martin Wilkins, conspire to create the perfect woman: part human and part animal. Gerard uses a biochemical serum and Chaka uses a voodoo doll and a dead chicken.

Their joint efforts have no enduring effect. When Marilyn appears, they seize her as the perfect subject and are partly successful in their attempt. The mad doctor tells his wife, "I'm using her to create a new being, not man, not beast, but a combination of the best of each.

When I'm finished we'll take her back to the States with us. We'll shatter the very foundations of science."
6. Film critics have frequently found similarities between the motion picture "Forbidden Planet" (1956) and which of William Shakespeare's plays?

Answer: The Tempest

Certain of the characters and the remote setting have prompted comparisons between "Forbidden Planet" and "The Tempest". The motion picture is certainly not an adaptation but does share linkages and bases for comparison. Dr. Edward Morbius shares much with Prospero.

His daughter Altaira shares much with Prospero's daughter Miranda. Both stories are encased in an isolated setting: one a distant planet and the other an uncharted island. As Miranda becomes romantically entangled with Ferdinand, one of the people shipwrecked there, so Altaira becomes romantically involved with Commander John Adams, one of the astronauts.
7. In what sort of automobile did newlyweds Eric Whitlock and Jenni Whitlock arrive at Eric's ancestral mansion in "The Screaming Skull" (1958)?

Answer: a gull-wing Mercedes-Benz 300 SL

Although Eric Whitelock's profession is not disclosed in the film, he inherited a great deal of money or earned a great deal of money, or both. His work requires him to travel as he leaves Jenni alone in the house while he is on a business trip. Eric drives a mid-1950s Mercedes-Benz 300SL gull-wing.

This car cost about $6,820 in 1958, which was the equivalent of about $71,000 when adjusted for inflation.
8. For what is Allison Hayes best known in the world of horror and science fiction movie making?

Answer: acting

American actress Allison Hayes (1930-1977) worked in motion pictures, on television and as a model. She won the Miss District of Columbia competition and represented the capital in the 1949 Miss American pageant. From 1954, she worked for Universal Pictures, sued them for an injury sustained at work, broke her contract and went to work for Columbia.

She acted on television ("General Hospital", "Bat Masterson") and in a series of B horror and science fiction movies: "The Undead" (1957), "Zombies of Mora Tau" (1957), "The Unearthly" (1957), "The Disembodied" (1957), "Attack of the 50 Foot Woman" (1958), "The Hypnotic Eye" (1960), and "The Crawling Hand" (1963).
9. Where is "Missile to the Moon" (1958) primarily set?

Answer: on the Moon's surface and lunar caves

A rocket ship is launched from Earth to the Moon. Vasquez Rocks Natural Area Park, in the Sierra Pelona Mountains, north of Los Angeles, doubled for the lunar surface. A red filter was used on the camera to make the blue sky appear as dark as space might appear from the Moon (but not totally successfully). Producers would have liked to remove the shrubbery plainly visible in the film (there is no shrubbery on the airless Moon) but park rules would not allow it.

This location served many other motion pictures, television programmes, TV commercials, and music videos, e.g. "Army of Darkness" (1992), "Forbidden World" (1982), "Galaxy Quest" (1999), "John Carter" (2012), "My Stepmother Is an Alien" (1988), "One Million B.C." (1940), "Parasite" (1982), "Planet of Dinosaurs" (1978), "Planet of the Apes" (2001), "Princess of Mars" (2009), "Space Raiders" (1983), and "Werewolf of London" (1935).
10. What evil did Lex Luthor do in "Superman and the Mole Men" (1951)?

Answer: He did not appear in this film.

"Superman and the Mole Men" did not include Superman's arch-enemy Lex Luthor. Other theatrical Superman films which did not feature Lex Luthor include "Superman III" (1983) and "Man of Steel" (2013). Alexander Joseph "Lex" Luthor is a supervillain who first appeared in "Superman Comics" in 1940. Luthor is power-mad and intent on destroying Superman, but doesn't appear to vex, harass and annoy the Last Son of Krypton in "Superman and the Mole Men" (1951).
