Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The people in "Teenage Cave Man" (1958) fear "the God that Gives Death with its Touch" which lives across the river. What does this god turn out to be?

Answer: a very old man in an anti-radiation suit

The Symbol Maker warns his son of the God that Gives Death with its Touch. It is one of many things that make it taboo to cross the river. A group of cave men confront this creature and the Black-Bearded One kills it with a rock. When its helmet is removed, the men discover an aged human -- with white hair and beard -- inside a protective suit.

It turns out that the "prehistoric" civilisation is actually post-apocalyptic and that this man was a scientist who survived atomic war in an anti-radiation suit which was, at one time, covered by toxic nuclear fallout.

The same radiation which mutated the dinosaurs caused the scientists to live extraordinarily long lives.
2. Three of these titles are genuine, bona fide, for-real, professionally-produced and theatrically-released motion pictures from the 1950s. Which one is *NOT*?

Answer: Demon from Hell

"The Hideous Sun Demon" (1959) was made by Robert Clarke (who wrote, produced, directed, and acted) and fellow students at the University of Southern California. The British film "Night of the Demon" (1957) was released as "Curse of the Demon" in the United States. "She Demons" (1958) starred Irish McCalla, who starred in "Sheena, Queen of the Jungle" on American television (1956-1957).

There was a popular song released by King Tuff in 2014 called "Demon From Hell". There was another different song called "Demon from Hell" released in 2021 by Impuls. Spanish graphic artist Alberto Perez produced a painting titled "Demon From Hell". Rian Johnson, who wrote and directed "Star Wars: The Last Jedi" (2017) and who produced "Knives Out" (2019) and its sequel "Glass Onion" (2022), wrote and directed a short film while at the University of Southern California, named "Evil Demon Golf Ball from Hell!!!" in 1997. There does not appear to have been a feature-length motion picture called "Demon from Hell" made in the 1950s.
3. How are the human mutants killed in "Day the World Ended" (1955)?

Answer: water

Louise is captured by one of the mutants. She escapes and runs into a small freshwater lake. The mutant will not follow her and seems afraid of the water. Rick shows up and fires several gunshots into the mutant but these have no effect. Louise tells Rick to get in the water; he does and the creature does not follow.

It begins to rain. This produces obvious discomfort in the mutant. The rain intensifies and the now-soggy creature collapses, emits smoke from its body, and dies.
4. Which American actor played newspaperman Ned "Scotty" Scott in "The Thing From Another World" (1951)?

Answer: Douglas Spencer

Journalist Ned Scott, played by Douglas Spencer, is having a drink at the Alaskan Air Command officer's club looking for a story. He persuades Captain Pat Hendry to take him along to the North Pole to investigate an aircraft's crash landing. And that is how he meets the Thing. Once the battle has been won, it is Scotty who shares the news with the world, broadcasting to journalists gathered in Anchorage.

He says, "Watch the skies everywhere. Keep looking. Keep watching the skies!"
5. How did Buck Rogers, the hero in "Planet Outlaws" (1953), get from the year 1938 to the year 2440?

Answer: Nirvano Gas put him in suspended animation.

Lieutenant Buck Rogers (Buster Crabbe) and Buddy Wade (Jackie Moran) are in a dirigible which crashes near the North Pole. They release an experimental gas called Nirvano which puts them into suspended animation. The wreckage is covered by an avalanche and they are not found/rescued until 2440.
6. What was the source of the story in the motion picture "Dementia" (1955)?

Answer: the writer-director's secretary's nightmare

After Adrienne Barrett, John Parker's secretary, told him about her nightmare, he thought it would make a good short film. He sketched out a story for a ten-minute film and asked Barrett to play the lead, despite her complete lack of experience acting. Bruno VeSota, who played the Rich Man, collaborated in extending the film to feature length.
7. For what are Dr. Frederick Cleveland and his daughter Janet searching in "Giant from the Unknown" (1958)?

Answer: evidence of the 16th century Diablo Brigade

Dr. Cleveland, played by Morris Ankrum, is an archaeologist. His daughter Janet, played by Sally Fraser, accompanies him on a search for evidence of a Spanish expedition into the area about 500 years before. The group, known as the "Diablo Brigade", was led by a huge conquistador named Vargas who was called "the Diablo Giant".

The brigade apparently separated from the main force and went into the hills looking for Indian gold.
8. For what is Roy Del Ruth best known in the world of horror and science fiction movie making?

Answer: directing

Roy Del Ruth (1893-1961) began his Hollywood career as a writer for Mack Sennett. He first directed in 1919 and continued to direct for forty years. His films include both silent movies and talkies. His were some of the biggest all-star vehicles of their time. Toward the end of his career, he directed Karl Malden in "Phantom of the Rue Morgue" (1954) and "The Alligator People" (1959).
9. Where did the exploratory party in "Unknown World" (1951) enter the Earth's subsurface?

Answer: the Mount Neleh crater in Alaska

The scientists' plan in "Unknown World" is to find access to subterranea by drilling into the surface of a volcanic crater. Once their exploratory vehicle (the "cyclotram") is prepared, they transport it to the caldera of Mount Neleh in Alaska. Both Mount Lefat and Mount Neleh are fictional.

Their machine drills down until they discover a 200-million-year-old limestone cavern. Filming locations for "Unknown World" included Carlsbad Caverns, Bronson Caves, Nichols Canyon, and Pismo Beach.
10. In the concluding scene of "On the Beach" (1959), who is still alive in Melbourne, Australia?

Answer: no one

The final scenes of the motion picture take place after the last person has died in Melbourne (and, presumably, the world). The wind blows through empty streets. A banner posted by the Salvation Army is stretched across a street. It reads, "There is still time... Brother." This is no longer the case.
