Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What sort of area does the search party discover on the mountaintop plateau in "Lost Continent" (1951)?

Answer: a lush prehistoric jungle

Once the search party reaches the plateau atop the mountain, they find a dense jungle, with steaming pools, cloaked in green mist, inhabited by dinosaurs. There is also a large field of uranium which is what affected the guidance systems on the atomic rocket and on the DC-3 search plane. Doctor Robert Phillips, played by Hugh Beaumont, says "You are looking at a kind of world that hasn't existed for millions of years."
2. Three of these titles are genuine, bona fide, for-real, professionally-produced and theatrically-released motion pictures from the 1950s. Which one is not?

Answer: Night of the Giant Worms

In "Attack of the Giant Leeches" (1959), the parasites mutate because of atomic radiation from Cape Canaveral. 1959's "The Giant Behemoth" is a radioactive Paleosaurus. The creature in "The Giant Claw" (1957) is an enormous bird from "an antimatter galaxy." There was a giant maggot in Roger Corman's "Galaxy of Terror" (1981), a ghost-eating sandworm in "Beetlejuice" (1988), and the Graboids in "Tremors" (1990- ).

But there was no "Night of the Giant Worms" in 1950s' cinema.
3. In the Spanish-language version of "The Aztec Mummy" ("La Momia Azteca") (1957), how is the mummy Popoca killed?

Answer: crushed in a cave-in inside the pyramid

In the denouement, the scientists pursuing the mummy Popoca go to the pyramid where a battle ensues. Oddly, the mummy cowers from the sight of a crucifix (thereby mixing movie metaphors). Dr. Sepulveda bravely gives up his own life by detonating dynamite which brings down the tomb onto both of them, apparently killing the mummy.
4. In what country was "The Blob" (1958) made?

Answer: US

"The Blob" was shot in several small communities around Valley Forge, Pennsylvania: Chester Springs, Downingtown, Phoenixville, and Royersford. Paramount Pictures distributed "The Blob" as a double feature with "I Married a Monster from Outer Space."
5. In "Teenagers from Outer Space" (1959), what happens between young alien Derek and Earth girl Betty Morgan?

Answer: They become romantic and kiss.

Derek, fleeing from his spaceship's crew, takes a room at the home of Betty Morgan and her grandpa. A relationship blooms between them and they kiss. Their romance is interrupted by a Gargon attack.
6. From what literary source was the script for "Them!" (1954) derived?

Answer: a short story by George Worthing Yates

George Worthing Yates was paid $25,000 for the right to adapt his short story into the motion picture "Them!" It was written as a story about giant ants in the subways under New York City. This was changed because the Los Angeles River was much closer to Hollywood. Russell Hughes attempted the screenplay which was completed by Ted Sherdeman.

Thereafter, Yates became a prominent screenwriter for the genre: "Conquest of Space" (1955), "It Came from Beneath the Sea" (1955), "Earth vs. the Flying Saucers" (1956), "The Amazing Colossal Man" (1957), "Attack of the Puppet People" (1958), "Earth vs. the Spider" (1958), "The Flame Barrier" (1958), "Frankenstein 1970" (1958), "Space Master X-7" (1958), "War of the Colossal Beast" (1958), and "King Kong vs. Godzilla" (1962).
7. Why did Shirley Kilpatrick, playing the alien in "The Astounding She-Monster" (1957) walk backwards out of every room she entered face forward?

Answer: Her costume was ripped up the back.

Shirley Kilpatrick was buxom, well-endowed and shapely. She had worked as a stripper before taking up acting in films. On the first day of filming, the back of her skin-tight costume split open when she bent over forwards. They did not have a back-up garment; they did not have a costume mistress on set.

The shooting schedule was as tight as had been the leotard. So she was directed to walk backwards out of every scene into which she had walked frontwards.
8. For what is Kurt Neumann best known in the world of horror and science fiction movie making?

Answer: directing

Kurt Neumann (1908-1958) was a German who came to Hollywood to direct motion pictures. His penchant for science-fiction movies began with "Rocketship X-M" (1950). He also directed "Kronos" (1957), and "She-Devil" (1957), and "The Fly" (1958). He died of natural causes on 21 August 1958, just five weeks after the theatrical opening of "The Fly."
9. Where was "Beginning of the End" (1957) set?

Answer: Illinois

The first evidence of giant grasshoppers is in the farming countryside of Illinois where an entire community (Ludlow, Illinois) is wiped out by something unknown. Most strange is that there is no sign of a single person in this town of 150 people. And the local fields are naked, having been stripped of their crops by something.

The hungry grasshoppers, which have become carnivorous, head for Chicago where the Illinois National Guard prepares to fight a final battle.
10. Based on the results of the examination made by Dr. Arthur Carrington in "The Thing From Another World" (1951), which of the following best describes the alien?

Answer: vegetable

The scientists at the arctic station examine an arm ripped off the alien by one of the camp's dogs. They find that it is made of plant cells. Although the monster is animated, it has no nerves. It is able to regenerate lost parts. They conclude that it is an intelligent vegetable.
