Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which well-known southern American playwright is alleged to have stepped in and directed a few scenes of "The Wild Women of Wongo" (1958) while visiting his friend, director James L. Wolcott, on the set?

Answer: Tennessee Williams

The story is told that Tennessee Williams visited the set on which "The Wild Women of Wongo" was being filmed. Just for fun, director James L. Wolcott allowed Williams to direct several scenes, just so he could have the experience. There is no particular evidence of the truth of this anecdote.

It seems likely that, had Williams actually worked on the film, he would have edited the dialogue due to its trite and hackneyed condition.
2. Three of these titles are genuine, bona fide, for-real, professionally-produced and theatrically-released motion pictures from the 1950s. Which one is *not*?

Answer: The Cosmic Woman

In "Attack of the 50 Foot Woman" (1958), a woman grows to giant size due to her contact with an alien. In "Voodoo Woman" (1957), a woman is turned into an invulnerable monster by an experimental serum. In "The Wasp Woman" (1959), a woman is turned into a wasp by a rejuvenating serum based on apian royal jelly. "Cosmic Girl" is a 1996 jazz single by the British band Jamiroquai. Tessa Koop wrote a somewhat autobiographical book entitled "Cosmic Woman" (2019). "Cosmic Woman" is also a 2019 recording by Christian Winter.

There is a style of tarot deck called "Cosmic Woman". There does not appear to have been a 1950s feature film entitled "The Cosmic Woman".
3. How is the monster destroyed at the end of "Horror of Dracula" (1958)?

Answer: sunlight and the sign of the cross

At the end of the film, Dr. Van Helsing pursues Dracula into a castle. In the ensuing fight, Van Helsing tears down a heavy curtain, allowing the sunshine to enter. Dracula begins to fall apart which process is hastened when Van Helsing holds two candlesticks at right angles to form a cross.

The vampire collapses onto a Zodiac wheel, inlaid on the floor, with quotations in both Greek and Latin. As he turns to dust, his ring is left on the glyph representing Aquarius.
4. Lee Ann Meriwether, perhaps better known as Miss America 1955 and as Ruth Martin on the soap opera "All My Children" (1996-2011), played what part in "4D Man" (1959)?

Answer: the mad scientist's girlfriend

Dr Scott Nelson's girlfriend, Linda David, falls in love with his brother, Dr Tony Nelson. Scott seeks vengeance and uses his newly-acquired powers. Linda ends up shooting him, while he is in a vulnerable state, leading to his being trapped inside a wall.
5. In "The Head" (1959), how does crazy Dr. Ood persuade the crippled nurse, Schwester Irene Sander, to assist him?

Answer: He promises to cure her hunchback.

Irene suffers from a debilitating hunchback. Dr. Ood secures her assistance by promising to cure her. The cure, however, is to remove her head and attach it to the lithe young body of Lilly, a striptease dancer in a local club.
6. From what source, not a motion picture, was "The Strange Door" (1951) derived or adapted?

Answer: a short story by Robert Louis Stevenson

Robert Louis Stevenson (1850-1894) was a prolific Scottish author. He wrote the novel "Treasure Island" (1883) and the novella "The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde" (1886). The motion picture "The Strange Door" (1951) was adapted from one of Stevenson's short stories: "The Sire de Malétroit's Door" (1877).
7. Who first appears at the opening of the film "The Tingler" (1959)?

Answer: Producer-Director Willam Castle

Castle appeared before the motion picture's opening scene to deliver a warning to the audience. He says, in part, "I feel obligated to warn you that some of the sensations - some of the physical reactions which the actors on the screen will feel - will also be experienced, by certain members of this audience.

These unfortunate, sensitive people will at times feel a strange, tingling sensation. But don't be alarmed; you can protect yourself. At any time you are conscious of a tingling sensation, you may obtain immediate relief by screaming. Don't be embarrassed about opening your mouth and letting rip with all you've got, because the person in the seat right next to you will probably be screaming too. And remember: a scream at the right time may save your life."
8. For what is Leo G. Carroll best known in the world of horror and science fiction movie making?

Answer: acting

Leo G. Carroll (1886-1972) was an English actor with a career spanning over forty years. He appeared in six Hitchcock films. He is remembered for his television series "Topper" (1953-1956) and "The Man from U.N.C.L.E." (1964-1968). His role as Prof. Gerald Deemer in 1955's "Tarantula" was something of an excursus in his career.
9. Where is the motion picture "The Angry Red Planet" (1959) mainly set?

Answer: Nevada (and on Mars and in between)

This motion picture begins in Washington, D.C. where military and scientific authorities become aware that their mission to Mars, spaceship MR-1, thought to be lost, is orbiting Earth. They decide to bring the ship home using remote control and land it at an Air Force base in Nevada.

They fly there on a B-52 and successfully land the ship. The remainder of the story of the mission is told in flashbacks from the hospital at the Nevadan air base.
10. An impending collision between a planet and a gypsy moon draws the intervention and assistance of whom in "Crash of Moons" (1954)?

Answer: Rocky Jones, Space Ranger

An impending collision between a planet and a gypsy moon compels Rocky Jones and the Space Ranger force to offer assistance in evacuating the potential victims. Bovaro, the king of the moon Posita, is willing but the suzerain of the planet Ophecius, named Cleolanta, refuses.

A group of ships belonging to members of the United World arrive just in time. The explosive collision of the two heavenly bodies is impressive.
