Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In "Phantom from Space" (1953), to which of the following was the alien's space suit NOT impervious?

Answer: It was impervious to all of these things.

When the Phantom was trapped in a tool shed, he shed his space suit in order to become invisible and escape. His pursuers put this space suit in a lead-lined box (it was radioactive) and took it back to the laboratory. They tried cutting the fabric with scissors and a knife unsuccessfully.

They held it in the flame of a Bunsen burner to no effect. They poured acid on it which rolled right off. Microscopic examination showed that there was no "weave" to the fabric at all but rather it was one continuous surface, perhaps metallic.
2. Three of these titles are genuine, bona fide, for-real, professionally-produced and theatrically-released motion pictures from the 1950s. Which one is not?

Answer: Outer Space Attacks

"Battle in Outer Space" (1959) is a Japanese Ishirō Honda motion picture about invaders from the Planet Natal. "Fire Maidens from Outer Space" (1956) is a British film about women without men on the 13th moon of Jupiter. "I Married a Monster from Outer Space" (1958) is an American scary movie starring Tom Tryon and Gloria Talbott.

There is a 1979 documentary film about alien visitors to Earth called "Attack from Outer Space." There is a 1964 Japanese-American television film called "Attack from Space." There is a 2000 Japanese Transformers film called "Attack from Outer Space." There does not appear to have been a 1950s feature film titled "Outer Space Attacks."
3. How is the monster in "20 Million Miles to Earth" (1957) finally killed?

Answer: blasted with guns/falls from height

The monster goes on a destructive rampage in Rome. It swims underwater in the River Tiber and destroys the Ponte Sant'Angelo. It enters the Colosseum and is engaged by soldiers armed with grenades and bazookas. It climbs the Colosseum and, when a tank round destroys the part of the structure on which it stands, it falls to its death below.
4. Probably better known for his movie role as Andy Hardy, who played Barnaby "Blix" Waterberry in "The Atomic Kid" (1954)?

Answer: Mickey Rooney

Born Joe Yule Jr. in 1920, Mickey Rooney went to work on stage as a member of a vaudeville family. He moved easily into films and eventually adult roles. In "The Atomic Kid," he plays the lead, Barnaby "Blix" Waterberry, who is given super powers by his exposure to nuclear radiation.
5. In "Them!" (1954), why does the Federal Bureau of Investigation send one of its agents, Robert Graham (played by James Arness) to investigate missing persons in the desert?

Answer: One of the missing is an FBI agent.

FBI Special Agent Ellinson was on vacation with his wife, son and small daughter. Their trailer was found in the desert, ripped apart from the inside. All of the family members were missing except the little girl, who was mute with fear. The FBI sent Special Agent Robert Graham to investigate.
6. The original 1957 Spanish-language version of "The Aztec Mummy" was followed by a re-edited "Americanized" version titled "Attack of the Mayan Mummy" in 1963. What is/are the difference(s) between Aztecs and Mayans?

Answer: names, territory, time, and languages

The Nahuatl-speaking Aztecs flourished in central Mexico from the 14th to the 16th centuries. Their empire included most of Mesoamerica. Historians place their civilisation in the Pre-Columbian Era. The Mayan empire ruled southern Mexico, northern Central America, including all of the Yucatán Peninsula. Their civilisation began around 2600 BC and peaked between 250 and 900 AD. Historians described their era as the Pre-classical Period. As regards the change in this movie's title, oops.
7. What kind of monster was threatening humankind (especially Chicago) in "Beginning of the End" (1957)?

Answer: giant grasshoppers

Locusts are the swarming phase of short-horned grasshoppers. They have ravaged crops for centuries. They are mentioned in both the Quran (7:133) and the Old Testament (e.g. Exodus 10 and the plagues upon Egypt). The grasshoppers in "Beginning of the End" became enlarged by consuming irradiated grain intended to produce larger yields.
8. For what is Robert Lansing best known in the world of horror and science fiction movie making?

Answer: acting

Born Robert Howell Brown, Robert Lansing (1928-1994) was a major American television and motion picture actor. He had significant roles in the TV series "12 O'Clock High" (1964), "87th Precinct" (1961-62), "Automan" (1983-84) and "The Equalizer" (1985-89).

He played in the theatrical movies "4D Man" (1959), "The Astronaut" (1972), "Empire of the Ants" (1977), "S*H*E" (1980), "Island Claws" (1980). He also played in the made-for-television movie "The Astronaut" (1972) and in the television programmes "The Twilight Zone," "Thriller," "Star Trek" and "Monsters."
9. Where, principally, is the motion picture "On the Beach" (1959) set?

Answer: Australia

While the American submarine Sawfish pays visits to Point Barrow, Alaska, San Francisco, California, and San Diego, California, the principal location of the story is in the Melbourne area of Australia. The premise is that nuclear explosions in the Northern Hemisphere have killed all of the people to the north, leaving only those in the southernmost parts of the globe to await the creeping fatal radiation headed their way.
10. From where was the missing atomic rocket launched in "Lost Continent" (1951)?

Answer: White Sands, New Mexico

The picture begins with the launch of an "atomic rocket" from the U.S. Government Proving Grounds in White Sands, New Mexico. It might have been an "atomic rocket" in the script but the actual vehicle looks a lot more like a German V-2. Civilian and military experts are gathered together there for the launch. The rocket goes off course and does not respond to signals correcting its flight. It crashes somewhere beyond the reach of the military's radar.
