Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. From where did the seventeen residents of Jupiter XIII come, according to "Fire Maidens from Outer Space" (1956)?

Answer: Atlantis on Earth

The astronauts from Earth discover a tiny colony called New Atlantis on the thirteenth moon of Jupiter. There are sixteen beautiful women and one very old man in their enclosure. They tell the astronauts that they escaped the earthly Atlantis as it slipped under the ocean.
2. Three of these titles are genuine, bona fide, for-real, professionally-produced and theatrically-released motion pictures from the 1950s. Which one is not?

Answer: Teenage Mutants

"Teenage Monster" (1957) was set in the American Old West. "Teenage Zombies" (1959) was set on a desert island occupied by a female mad scientist, a gorilla, and a zombie named Ivan. "Teenagers from Outer Space" (1959) is set in the US where aliens land looking to farm air-breathing lobster monsters for food.

There are the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. There is a German musical duo called the Teenage Mutants. There was a 2020 teenage movie titled "The New Mutants." There does not seem to have been a 1950s motion picture called "Teenage Mutants."
3. What is strange about Dr. Emil Zurich in "The Four Skulls of Jonathan Drake" (1959)?

Answer: He has a white head on a brown body.

Zurich was originally an employee of Capt. Wilfrid Drake who incurred the wrath of the Jivaro tribe in Ecuador in 1873. Drake ordered all of the men and boys of the tribe killed in retribution for the kidnapping and killing of one of his men. Their witch doctor, Zutai, placed a curse on the Drake male line. Zurich appears in 1959, his white Swiss head sewn onto a brown Jivaro body, accompanied by Zutai, both of them seemingly immortal.
4. Clint Eastwood appears uncredited as a jet pilot in "Tarantula" (1955).

Answer: True

Eastwood appears briefly as the leader of a squadron of US Air Force jets sent to incinerate a giant tarantula with napalm. He was obviously bound for stardom as it was his bomb which actually killed the monster. This was his first appearance in an uncredited role in a B movie; the second was in "Revenge of the Creature" (1955).

In the latter film, he played Jennings, the laboratory assistant, who memorably said "It is my considered opinion that rat Number Four is sitting inside that cat."
5. How is Janet Lawton dressed when Dr. Varnoff is about to irradiate her in "Bride of the Monster" (1955)?

Answer: in a wedding gown

Dr. Varnoff has placed newspaperwoman Janet Lawton under hypnosis and thereby controls her mind. When he is prepared to subject her to his machine for making super-persons, he dresses her in a white wedding gown. The film is vague about the significance of this attire (save its consonance with the movie's title) and about where the good doctor might have found a dress that fit so perfectly on such short notice.
6. Why was "From the Earth to the Moon" (1958) made by one company and distributed by another?

Answer: Maker went bankrupt; distributor bought the film.

RKO Pictures made "From the Earth to the Moon" on a tight budget. All of the scenes planned to take place on the surface of the Moon were cut during production to save money. In the middle of filming, RKO went bankrupt. Warner Brothers bought the film and released/distributed it.
7. Which other director, famous for his many suspense thrillers, was beaten out by Henri-Georges Clouzot by a matter of hours to purchase the rights to film "Diabolique" (1955)?

Answer: Alfred Hitchcock

"Diabolique" has been frequently compared favourably to the films of Alfred Hitchcock. It is a suspense thriller with a wicked twist ending, which is very much Hitchcock's mode. Apparently Clouzet got to the authors, Boileau and Narcejac, only a few hours before Hitchcock. Hitchcock later stated that he was a big fan of "Diabolique."
8. For what is Zsa Zsa Gabor best known in the world of horror and science fiction movie making?

Answer: acting

It is perhaps a reach to identify Zsa Zsa Gabor as an actress. Her celebrity arose from beauty pageants, a succession of nine marriages, and a life calculated to keep her in the public eye. The Hungarian-born Gabor brought her Hungarian accent to the all-female society residing on Venus in "Queen of Outer Space" (1958). How such an accent would occur there is unanswered by the film. If that motion picture is to be enjoyed as a camp exercise of space-ploitation kitsch, then she fills the part exceptionally well.
9. "I Was a Teenage Werewolf" (1957) is set in Riverside, California.

Answer: False

The producers of "I Was a Teenage Werewolf" were cagey in locating the action in this motion picture. Tony Rivers is a student in Rockdale High School but no location for this educational institution is given. Miss Ferguson, the principal of Rockdale High, tells Tony that she will recommend him for admission to "State College," without disclosing its location.

The usual cinematic motivation for using a generic setting is to suggest that the events in the film could occur in any community anywhere.
10. In "Queen of Outer Space" (1958), when the members of the US spaceship crew are taken prisoner and brought before Queen Yllana, she is wearing a face mask. Why does she wear this mask?

Answer: Her face is horribly disfigured.

Queen Yllana takes an interest in Captain Neal Patterson, played by Eric Fleming, the commander of the mission. In her bedroom, he pulls off her face mask. Her face is covered with black-and-blue radiation scars and red running sores, which were suffered during her participation in a war against men.
