Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What method was used to animate the monster in "Godzilla" (1954)?

Answer: suitmation

The original plan to animate Godzilla was to use stop-motion animation. This plan was discarded when the potential expense was computed (and an estimate of seven years in production was made). The monster was designed with parts of Tyrannosaurus, Iguanodon and Stegosaurus in the mix.

A crew built a human-sized suit in which a stunt man could interact with miniature sets. This technique was dubbed "suitmation." The first version, made of latex, weighed 220 pounds and the actor inside (Haruo Nakajima or Katsumi Tezuka) could move it only with the greatest effort.

In one scene, Nakajima was inside the suit for only three minutes before passing out.
2. Three of these titles are genuine, bona fide, for-real, professionally-produced and theatrically-released motion pictures from the 1950s. Which one is not?

Answer: Crypt of Lost Souls

In "Lost Continent" (1951), Cesar Romero leads an expedition on a remote Pacific island. In "Lost Planet Airmen" (1951), Rocket Man saves the world from Dr. Vulcan. In "Mesa of Lost Women" (1953), Dr. Aranya creates a race which is half-woman and half-tarantula. Lemax, the maker of Christmas-village figurines, made a "Spooky Town" series in which "Crypt Of The Lost Pumpkin Souls" was offered. There does not appear to have been a movie called "Crypt of Lost Souls."
3. What kind of monsters served as slaves to the Sumerians in "The Mole People" (1956).

Answer: mutant humanoid mole men

There are two castes in the underground world described by "The Mole People." One is the albino Sumerians who rule the kingdom and the other is the mutant humanoid mole men who do all the manual labour, including harvesting the mushrooms on which they all live.
4. Perhaps better known as "the Professor" Roy Hinkley on "Gilligan's Island" (1964-1966), who played the multi-talented Hank Chapman in "Attack of the Crab Monsters" (1957)?

Answer: Russell Johnson

Russell Johnson plays Hank Chapman, an all-around guy who knows a little bit about a lot of things and who is able to repair the radio destroyed by the crab monsters. Working with a group of PhDs, he says, in one scene, "I'm no scientist" which is exactly what he turns out to be a few years later on "Gilligan's Island." His other sci-fi credits include playing George, the country lineman, in "It Came from Outer Space" (1953) and as Dr. Steve Carlson, one of the scientists working for the aliens, in "This Island Earth" (1955).
5. Where are the aliens in "Killers from Space" (1954) originally from?

Answer: Astron Delta

Astron Delta is, according to what the space invaders tell Dr. Martin, the fourth planet from the star at the center of their solar system. That sun has been progressively losing its potency and is unable to support life on Astron Delta. They are in search of a planet to which to move their population of one billion google-eyed people like themselves.
6. On what was the 1957 motion picture "The 27th Day" based?

Answer: a novel by John Mantley

Canadian author John Mantley wrote his novel "The 27th Day" in 1956. It was chosen a Book-of-the-Month Club selection. Mantley had tried both acting and directing until he settled into a career as a writer. He turned his own novel into the screenplay for "The 27th Day." There is, perhaps, greater intellectual content in this film than in many of the screamers and creature features of its era.
7. How were the monsters in "The Brain Eaters" (1958) killed?

Answer: electrocuted

Glenn Cameron, the mayor's son, works with Dr. Paul Kettering to destroy the monsters. They use a harpoon gun from a power-company truck to launch an electrical cable over some high-tension power-transmission lines. Alice (possessed by the creatures) shoots Paul before he can do his part. Glenn fires the gun which connects the power lines to the creatures' cone ship.

The creatures are all electrocuted.
8. For what is Robert Dix best known in the world of horror and science fiction movie making?

Answer: acting

Robert Dix (1935-2018) was born Robert Warren Brimmer. He acted in fifty motion pictures. In addition to his role as Grey in "Forbidden Planet" (1956), Dix appeared in "Frankenstein's Daughter" (1958), "Blood of Dracula's Castle" (1969), "Satan's Sadists" (1969), "Five Bloody Graves" (1969), "Hell's Bloody Devils" (1970), and "Horror of the Blood Monsters" (1970).
9. Where is "House on Haunted Hill" (1959) set?

Answer: in a house on a hill overlooking Los Angeles

The exterior shots of the "House on Haunted Hill" were taken on the Ennis House in the Los Feliz neighbourhood of Los Angeles, California. The house was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright for Charles and Mabel Ennis in 1923 and was built in 1924. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. No interior scenes were shot in the house; all of them were shot in Allied Artists' sound stages decorated as a 1890s Victorian manner by Morris Hoffman (1901-1989).
10. Why did Baron Frankenstein lease access to his castle to an American filmmaking company in "Frankenstein 1970" (1958)?

Answer: He was poor but wanted to buy an atomic reactor.

The Baron's experiments at creating life required a source of power greater than he could achieve. So he had an atomic reactor installed in the secret sub-basement of his castle. As much as he disliked the intrusion of the movie people in his home, he very much needed their money.
