Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What kind of monster attacks people in and around the Salton Sea in "The Monster That Challenged the World" (1957)?

Answer: giant prehistoric mollusks

The creatures in "The Monster That Challenged the World" are enormous mollusks who are dislodged by an earthquake at the bottom of California's Salton Sea. They don't really look like mollusks; they sometimes appear without their shell. Most mollusks have one or two shells; a few, like squids, octopi, and these monsters, do not.

These creatures look rather like a caterpillar, only with pincer jaws (like earwigs have on their other ends) and giant bulging eyes (like a tarsier). Where it goes, it spreads slime.

When it attacks a human, it drains the body of its fluids and the victim's skin turns black.
2. Three of these titles are genuine, bona fide, for-real, professionally-produced and theatrically-released motion pictures from the 1950s. Which one is not?

Answer: Godzilla Conquers the Earth

"Godzilla" (1954) was the first in the Godzilla franchise. "Godzilla Raids Again" (1955) was the second. "Godzilla, King of the Monsters!" (1956) was a heavily-edited version of the original "Godzilla" (1954) made for American audiences. There was never a film made in the 1950s called "Godzilla Conquers the Earth."
3. What kind of monster was the "Beast from Haunted Cave" (1959)?

Answer: an ugly hairy man-spider beast

"Beast from Haunted Cave" is shot and edited in such a way that the viewer doesn't get a really good look at the monster in the film's title. From its long arms, it appears to be a spider. From its face, it is more like an ugly man. From its behaviour, it is a sort of vampire, slowly draining off the bodily fluids of its victims, entrapped in cocoons.

It has wispy hair and what could be spider webs hanging off of it. And it's really ugly!
4. Perhaps better known as the barrister in "Rumpole of the Bailey," which actor played "Mac" McGill in "X: The Unknown" (1956)?

Answer: Leo McKern

Quite unlike his role as a barrister for the down and out in the Old Bailey, McKern plays the chief of security of the UK Atomic Energy Commission in "X the Unknown." He and scientist Dr. Adam Royston are assigned to investigate a strange force which has killed several people, apparently by melting them and turning them into ash.
5. In "Blood of Dracula" (1957), where do the girls organize their Hallowe'en scavenger hunt?

Answer: the local cemetery

Despite the recent mysterious murder of Nola, the girls decide to hold a Hallowe'en scavenger hunt in the local cemetery. Each girl is given a clue and an Army entrenching tool with which to dig. Nancy turns into her vampirine self and kills one of the girls, Terry, played by Shirley De Lancey, and one of the boys, Tab, played by Jerry Blaine.
6. In what country was "Horror of Dracula" (1958) made?

Answer: Great Britain

"Horror of Dracula" (US title) was filmed as "Dracula" in the U.K. by Hammer Productions. Hammer was attempting to establish itself as a major producer of horror motion pictures. It was directed by Terence Fisher, who made many films for Hammer, and written by Jimmy Sangster, who wrote many horror scripts for Hammer.
7. In "The Angry Red Planet" (1959), who discovers the cure for the infectious amoeba-slime attached to Colonel Thomas O'Bannion's arm?

Answer: Dr. Iris "Irish" Ryan

As the crew flees the melted-gummy-bear-ameboid monster, it grasps Colonel O'Bannion's arm. Monster acid burns through his space suit and monster slime infects his arm. At the USAF Hospital, Dr. Gordon and Dr. Muller are unable to stop the growth of the green-black ooze consuming the colonel's arm. Dr. Ryan gets out of her hospital bed and assists in the effort to find a cure.

She cleverly uses low-grade electrical shocks to prod the amoeba goo to move to an adjacent non-charged non-human live tissue to avoid being shocked.

It works!
8. For what is James Best best known in the world of horror and science fiction movie making?

Answer: acting

Jewel Franklin Guy (1926-2015) worked as James Best in many capacities having to do with entertainment: acting on stage, in television and in motion pictures, directing, writing, teaching drama, and as a musician. Perhaps his best-known role was as Sheriff Rosco P. Coltrane in television's "The Dukes of Hazzard" (1979-1985).

In addition to appearing as a crew member of the C-57D space ship in "Forbidden Planet" (1956), Best had roles in "Abbott and Costello Meet the Invisible Man" (1951), "The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms" (1953), "Riders to the Stars (1954), "I Was a Teenage Werewolf" (1957), "The Killer Shrews" (1959), and "Return of the Killer Shrews" (2012).
9. Where was "The Phantom from 10,000 Leagues" (1955) set?

Answer: a California ocean-beach community

The action in "The Phantom from 10,000 Leagues" occurs in and around Baker's Cove, California. Filming took place at Paradise Cove in Malibu, California, at Santa Monica State Beach, Santa Monica, California, and on Santa Catalina Island, Channel Islands, California.
10. What is the "battle" to which the title of "Battle Beyond the Sun" (1959) refers?

Answer: there doesn't seem to be one

There is no particular "battle" in "Battle Beyond the Sun." There is no confrontation between the Martians and the humans; there may not even BE any Martians. While there is a space race between the nations, it is at least partly cooperative, as evidenced by Mercury's rescue of the Typhoon's crew. "Battle" was perhaps puffing.
