Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Tablecloth
Day 1, at supper. When Dr. Constance Petersen (role by Ingrid Bergman) first met Dr. Anthony Edwardes (played by Gregory Peck), she carved an outline in the tablecloth to represent the plans for an outdoor swimming pool. Edwardes reacted with a joking quote "I take it the supply of linen is inexhaustible". But his intonation revealed that this incident triggered some dark reminiscence.
2. Chamber robe
Day 1, at night. When Dr. Petersen kept tossing and turning in bed, she arose and donned her chamber robe to fetch Dr. Edwardes' book from the library. There she met Dr. Edwardes, and they recognize having fallen in love at first sight. But when Dr. Edwardes notices the stripes on Dr. Petersen's chamber robe, he felt some anxiety.
3. Operating room
Day 2, at night. M. Garmes, one of the patients of Green Manors, had tried to commit suicide. All the staff went to the operating room to try stabilizing M. Garmes' condition, for he had lost much blood. When Dr. Edwardes arrived, he made curious remarks about the light being switched off in the corridors and then fainted.
4. Signature
Day 2, late at night. Dr. Petersen volunteered to attend to Dr. Edwardes. She brought with her the autographed book of Dr. Edwardes and a handwritten note by which he had invited her earlier to spend the afternoon together. When comparing the signatures, Dr. Petersen noticed that the person posing as "Dr. Edwardes" was not the real Dr. Edwardes at all.
5. Cigarette case
Day 2, late at night. When Dr. Petersen asked "Dr. Edwardes" about previous incidents, he produced a silver cigarette case with the initials J.B. He explained that the cigarette case caused a migraine, and then reasoned that he had to be J.B., the companion of the real Dr. Edwardes when Dr. Edwardes disappeared. J.B. then assumed Dr. Edwardes had to be dead, murdered, and that J.B. would have killed Dr. Edwardes - the only way he would know for sure that he could take Dr. Edwardes' identity.
6. Skin graft
Day 4, morning. J.B. had left Green Manors and checked in at a hotel in New York, informing Dr. Petersen of his vague plans. Dr. Petersen followed him, and at an embrace she noticed J.B. had a skin graft on his hand.
She then first ascertained J.B. had medical training, and she persuaded him to take the train to where Dr. Edwardes had taken him before.
At the ticket box J.B. remembered having been to Rome, and when the couple took a train to Rochester Dr. Petersen then asked him about Rome. J.B. then produced a first memory: he was a medic flying over Rome, Italy in the war, and the plane was shot down - leaving him with serious burns on his left hand, thus needing a skin graft.
7. Bedspread
Day 4, evening. J.B. and Dr. Petersen arrived at Dr. Brulov (played by Michael Chekhov), another psychiatrist and former tutor of Dr. Petersen. Dr. Brulov asked them to stay over, and the couple went to the guest room. There J.B. had a crisis when he saw the stripes on the white bedspread.
8. Dream
Day 5, morning. J.B. came down at night and was sedated by Dr. Brulov. As he woke, J.B. told the two psychiatrists about his dream (a sequence designed by Salvador Dali).
J.B. dreamt he was at a casino with curtains full of eyes, and someone with a giant pair of scissors was cutting up all eyes. Then J.B. was playing cards with a bearded man. J.B. drew the 7 of clubs, and the bearded man showed his blank cards saying "That makes 21". The proprietor (a masked man) came in threatening the bearded man. Later J.B. and the bearded man were on a sloped roof, and J.B. saw the bearded man fall into an abyss. When he turned around, he noticed the proprietor (still masked) peeping out from behind a chimney, dropping a crooked wheel. J.B then dreamt he ran down the slope, pursued by a winged creature.
Dr. Brulov and Dr. Petersen deciphered this dream partly. Apparently J.B. and Dr. Edwardes (the bearded man) had visited a place called Club 21, where the proprietor had threatened Dr. Edwardes.
Later J.B. and Dr. Edwardes went skiing, and Dr. Edwardes fell into an abyss.
J.B. then remembered the place where they went skiing: San Gabriel Valley, California.
9. Snow
Day 5, just after deciphering the dream. Dr. Petersen decided to take J.B. to San Gabriel Valley in order to relive the events leading up to Dr. Edwardes' death, and so triggering the last missing memory.
On the ski slope J.B. remembered then an accident form his childhood: while sliding down the banisters of an outdoor stairs, J.B. hit his brother, who then fell on the spiked fencing and died immediately. This accident and the events involving Dr. Edwardes have caused J.B.'s amnesia, and now the memories came flooding back.
J.B. remembered his full name: John Ballantyne, and never having married before.
The police then came and declared they had found Dr. Edwardes' body exactly where J.B. had told them to look - only Dr. Edwardes had been shot from behind.
10. "I knew him slightly"
Day 7, back at Green Manors. In absence of Dr. Edwardes, it was decided that Dr. Murchison (role by Leo G. Carroll) would temporarily remain the director. When Dr. Murchison and Dr. Petersen mused about what Green Manors would have been under Dr. Edwardes, Dr. Murchison replied "I knew him only slightly. I never liked him".
This phrase started haunting Dr. Petersen, and on rereading the notes about J.B.'s dream, she found out the truth. She immediately confronted Dr. Murchison, who admitted having shot and killed Dr. Edwardes. Then the most gripping image of the black and white movie is shown: Dr. Murchison threatened Dr. Petersen with a gun (shown in the dream as a crooked wheel), and as she left his office, the gun turned towards the camera and the only flash of colour in the movie appeared as the gun went off.
The final scene showed Dr. Petersen and John Ballantyne parting on their honeymoon, with the blessings of Dr. Brulov.
