Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is one of the main themes of this movie?

Answer: Pirate Radio

This movie is set on a boat in the middle of the North Atlantic Ocean in the mid Sixties. A seventeen year old boy - Young Carl - is sent by his mother to get straightened up by his godfather. Except that the boat and it's inhabitants are far from straight - they are a group of people who broadcast Rock music on their radio station, to the displeasure of the authorities.
2. Who wrote and directed this film?

Answer: Richard Curtis

Richard Curtis is an acclaimed director who has directed other such movies as "Four Weddings and a Funeral" and "Love Actually." He also invented "Comic Relief." He has been nominated for an Oscar, two Golden Globes and six BAFTAs, one of which he won.
3. What is the name of the boy from the beginning of the film?

Answer: James

The boy says goodnight to his parents who tell him to go "straight to bed" and to "sleep tight." He then goes and listens to Radio Rock under his pillow. Thus are we introduced to the boat and the DJs.
4. Sir Alistair Dormandy is charged with shutting down Pirate Radio. The man he hires is called Dominic...?

Answer: Twatt

Yes, his name is Dominic Twatt. Twatt is a highly educated man who regards any but classical music as awful. At one point Dormandy tells Mr Twatt not to get too friendly with his daughter, as he wouldn't like his grandchildren to be Twatts.
5. Which actor does not appear in this film?

Answer: Tom Hollander

Tom Brooke plays Kevin, Tom Wisdom plays Mark and Tom Sturridge is Carl. Although Tom Hollander has appeared in such films as "Desperate Romantics" as John Ruskin and the "Pirates of the Caribbean" trilogy as Cutler Beckett, he does not appear in this film.
6. Most of the people on the boat have nicknames. Which of these is not one of them?

Answer: Beautiful Bob

Bob's nickname is Smooth Bob, the Dawn Treader. He does the dawn shift and turns out to be Carl's Father. Midnight Mark is - according to Quentin - the sexiest man in the universe, Angus the Nut is the fall guy, and Simple Simon is the host of the breakfast radio show.
7. What is the name of Young Carl's roommate?

Answer: Thick Kevin

Thick Kevin is, as his name suggests, very thick. He thinks rabbits are at Christmas, not Easter. Although it is he who suggests that Young Carl's father may be on the boat, leading Carl to find Bob.
8. Who does Simple Simon marry?

Answer: Elenore

Simon and Elenore were married after knowing each other a week. Then Elenore left him after seventeen hours of marriage. The split was publicly blamed on musical differences, but it was really because Elenore had only married him to be close to Gavin, one of the other DJs.
9. "Nice Guy. Long hair. Had lots of friends". Who is Young Carl's roommate talking about?

Answer: Jesus

Kevin displays his thickness in a game where you are given a name and have to give clues to the other person. He says this very smugly, but it still takes Young Carl a long time to work it out. When asked why he didn't just say he was the son of God, he revealed that he didn't know that.
10. True or False: The boat sinks at the end of the film.

Answer: True

The DJs set sail to avoid the authorities but the boat is old and it sinks. The whole crew is rescued, however, by the listeners of Radio Rock, who heard the distress signal they sent out, and thankfully, no one dies.
